I mean,
the man.
Turns out, their next project? Yeah, they're making a film version of Howard Zinn's controversial nearly-30-year-old book that changed how history is taught and thought about,
The People's History of the United States, entitled
The People Speak.
So, how are they doing it? Well, they were turned down by just about everybody in the industry when it came to producing it, and it has been in the works forever and just failed to go anywhere, so now they're making a documentary, with the help of Prof. Zinn himself, along with the help of a
shitload of other celebrities.
Like who?
How about Josh Brolin, Viggo Mortenson, Marissa Tomei, Danny Glover and a bunch more. Zinn is working closely with the whole production, and initial filming has already begun.
Why is the People's History of the United States so controversial? Well, basically it shuns the ideas of telling only the great conquests and victories of rich white people and it tells the history from the actual accounts of those who lived it and exposes the brutality and immoral methods used to create this great country of ours (yeah, fuck you Canada and other places. USA! USA! USA!), and tends to paint portraits of our glorious founding fathers as, well, inhuman monsters, often by using their own records. And we're talking about going all the way back to Columbus and working our way all the way to modern day.
So.
I'm pretty excited about this, I think it could be pretty fascinating, and hopefully get a few more folks interested in history, because, when you get past the bunch of craps they teach you in schools, it turns out that it is actually kind of fascinating stuff.

doing something interesting?
the fuck?
double plus doh
:O
Sounds cool, regardless.
no set date yet, but they're trying to complete it before the presidential elections.
no distribution deal yet, either, and if HBO won't pick it up, they're saying "Well, there's always YouTube"
which is kinda cool
it means they're not doing this for money, they're doing this for the message
I'd watch it
Ben Affleck can basically lick my taint, though.
you know ben affleck
And because of it the whole "project greenlight' fell apart.
God Ben Affleck is such a douche.
I made a TD for iphone and windows phone!
then again, that's like 1 movie in the last 15
until every child in America remembers George Washington as a war criminal the work is not done
MATT DAMON
(actually I like Matt Damon--totally would have made a better Daredevil.)
I made a TD for iphone and windows phone!
you know who else was a total fascist?
Heath Ledger.
...
In all fairness though, Columbus was a gigantic dickbag.
I don't know about you but my teachers and textbooks throughout grade school did a pretty thorough job of telling me how big of an asshole Christopher Columbus was.
hell, it's still running on backstabbing and prejudice! where's the story in that?
hundreds of years ago people weren't as nice as they are now!
more at eleven
sure, hitler made some mistakes, but that's why pencils have erasers!
or were they
equally nice
LET THIS THREAD BE STRICKEN FROM THE RECORD
I honestly don't get the point of this post. Unless you are just trying to say that it is obvious that people were mean a long time ago?
Which I guess... excuses genocide and silly little things like that.
I say we need to learn from the future
See, what I was doing here was using hyperbole to illustrate my frustration with the seemingly endless parade of historians working overtime to take people whose accomplishments shaped the world we live in and show how they were all really bloodthirsty racist monsters.
I don't understand the point of it all.
we don't care what you think
Do we make reparations to ourselves or what?
Oh. Gotcha. I think it is just because there is still so much "Golly gee look at our countries infallible history, we are the best and every other nation is composed primarily of savages." going around.
I mean, if you are somewhat educated then sure, you will know that is not true. But there are still plenty of Americans out there who don't know a lot of these things. I mean I did not really know about half the things Columbus did until my freshman year of college (last year)... and I love history.
because if you're defending someone like columbus, who was a monster, then you're wrong

To try and prevent people from slipping even further into jingoistic fervor?
To recognize their merits while simultaneously learning from their mistakes?
To teach people that even great figures are still, at their core, human? Which could, in turn, inspire even flawed people to pursue noble deeds.
Seriously, what the hell is wrong with you. "Man, I'm so sick of all this bad history. Only tell me the good shit, yo." Whatever, Mahmoud.
It's probably because you're a complete fucking moron.
