What the hell is 4chan? I see it mentioned in Debate & Discourse from time to time (and in this forum as well) like it is some kind of insidious force, or a haven for sick freaks, that has entered common knowledge. But I'm out of date, or something.
Imagine middle school.
Imagine every middle school male in the US, rounded together and put into one giant middle school.
Now imagine that annoying guy who hangs out with you - even though you don't like him - that is stupid as shit and makes jokes that lost their funny value in the seventh grade.
Imagine him, and every other annoying guy just like him, in this giant middle school.
Now add an unhealthy amount of boredom.

No doubt you're going to go there just to see what all the hoo-hah is about, so advice: most of the boards are full of generic unmoderated forum crap. I idolise this place as a direct result of seeing how bad forums can be. The 18+ is obviously pretty much porn, and /b/ is probably the most terrifying place on the internet, and what most people refer to when they speak of 4chan's horrors. If you absolutely must go there, put something to throw up in next to your keyboard - you will need it.
4chan is a simple image-based bulletin board where anyone can post comments and share images. 4chan's collaborative-community format is copied from one of the most popular forums in Japan, Futaba Channel. Different boards are dedicated to different topics, from Japanese anime, manga, and culture to videogames, music, and photography. Users do not need to register a username before participating in the community. Feel free to click on a board that interests you, and jump right in—anyone can contribute!
That's a reasonable enough description of most of the boards, but what people tend to mean when they say 4chan is /b/, the random board, which is a board where pretty much any subject matter/content goes, and most everyone posts anonymously. Posters on /b/ are characterised (mostly by themselves) as the worst the internet has to offer, but in reality it's basically just a bunch of 13 year olds engaged in an eternal pissing contest. There's a lot of gross shit on there, occasionally some funny things, but more than anything it's just a tedious shithole.

I did and i wish i hadn't
Note to self - do not learn what 4chan is and visit the /b/ bit at work. EVER AGAIN. i scrolled down to a picture called "man train". That was not good.
It is large forum for posting images. I think it was inspired by a similar japanese web site.
In it's defense, 2channel is a much nicer place to be.
Someone has never accidentally ended up in the Guro/Scat section when they were checking out 2channel.
With respect to 4chan as far as I can see besides /b/ which is it's own microcosm I don't really see the other (SFW) boards as being even close to it's equivalent they often have legitimate discussions on the anime or vg boards. Though nothing redeems /b/.

Anything even remotely funny that's posted on 4chan will be copied and reposted on the internet a million fucking times over. The only thing worth while on 4chan is the wallpaper section, and even at that the 7chan one is generally better.

Oh fantastic, the mere mention of that will give me nightmares...
There are actually portions of 4chan that intelligent and helpful. You just have to remember. If the board background is a blue shade you're in the clear. If it's yellow then expect terrible terrible things.
While it has cleaned up some there is a big push to bring it back into the days where dead babies were standard fare. When most people refer to 4chan they are referencing the "random" section of the site or /b/
Just avoid it. You shouldn't like it (god I hope you don't like it) and they won't like you. You'll be a better person for it, really. But if not, enjoy.
To give you a little more practical information on 4chan, it isn't exactly the cesspit of hate that everyone here is describing it as. The first and most important thing to know about it is that it is entirely anonymous. The Penny-Arcade forums are fairly anonymous given that nobody here knows your real name or where you live or anything. In 4chan, they largely don't use names whatsoever, so the default state is that you have no clue who is posting.
There are also two parts to 4chan, there is /b/ and there is everything else. The rest of 4chan isn't so bad, they usually stay relatively on topic and polite. That is to say, I wouldn't say it is significantly worse than SE++ for example. If you want to go check it out, I'd suggest trying the creative channels first, as they tend to be the most constructive and friendly (photography, origami, artwork critique). On the other hand, /b/ is the distilled essence of everything that is most hateful about 4chan. It's also the funniest.
An internet image forum based off a popular Japaneses forum.
The forum is most known for its sub forum '/b/' (or 'RANDOM') which is popular due to its lack of rules and the forced anonymity. Essentially, it is a haven for trolls. The board is based off of a vast collection of memes originating, usually upon happenings in the forums. Over time they become obscured and nonsensical. Really, it is just a forum that exists upon tons of inside jokes, that one would only get if they have been there for some time (frequently they will tell you to 'lurk more'. The other forums aren't nearly as bad as /b/, but that isn't saying much.
Forumers that frequent /b/ are referred to as '/b/tards'. /b/tards sometimes say, "Raiding 4chan is like pissing into an ocean of piss". Which I find to be an accurate statement. 4chan really is an ocean of piss, and lolz.
I find 4chan, and mostly /b/ to be an interesting social experiment. It shows what people will do when given nearly complete anonymity, and a place to gather.

That is a somewhat accurate description of 4chan.

It is notoriously regarded as a pit of hell unless you are between 12 and 17. So the first reply was pretty much right.
we also talk about other random shit and clown upon each other

As much as I hate to say it, anon is no match for scientology.
Shhhhhhh they might be listening...

It should be noted that 12chan consist of the people kicked off of 4chan. So yeah, that's about accurate.
