I took a gap year before uni, and spent 3 months in Sri Lanka, on Sri Lankan telly, the only English Language news I could get was Fox News. At the time the big hoo hah about the comic depicting the prophet Mohamed was a big news story.

They had interviewed two people, from both sides of the censorship argument, one was a white middle class media savvy politician, one was a fairly orthodox Muslim Imam.

What I learnt from these interviews are that all muslims are crazy censorship fascists, and are wrong, and also crazy, and that they all condone '9/11'.

The particular Imam they interviewed had some really interesting things to say on the issue, but wasn't media savvy at all. They spent the whole time instead of trying to hear what he had to say, undermining him, and putting words into his mouth. They asked him questions like "do you not think all Muslims have a responsibility to apologise for the 9/11 attacks?" and "people get away with anti Christian opinions all the time, and we don't riot" and "people are rioting, which is violent, and therefore you are contradicting the message of Mohamed". All they asked the other guy was questions like "Are you worried about the children?" and "is freedom of speech good?"

    Fuck you Fox news.

It's not that I think you are bad. I just think you are hurting America.

It looks like they've started to take down the reviews section on her books on amazon, as some of them now show no reviews. But the tags are sticking, so if someone wants a book on ignorance hers will be the first to come up.

I think its hilarious that no one is picking up on the LAST word that actually got said which does pretty much sum up the salient point here: if you are a parent - be active in your kids gaming habits (yes that includes locking up the XBOX/PS3 when you arent at home).

Was their hyperbole in the report - of course. The board is not going to give an AO rating for this game any more than they would give an NC17 rating to a movie that has full frontal. But these are so called academics - if there is a psychologist who also happens to know about vidja games then email FNC and get them to put him on the panel.

Except that the issue taken is their report was completely false. Sure, be a parent, get involved, blah blah. But they're the fucking NEWS, not an advocacy group and every single criticism they had was false. Well, except for the "There's sex in the game" one. But there's no frontal nudity at all and the sex isn't graphic. Like EA said, primetime television is more graphic. So is it okay to completely slander a game so long as you're making a good point once you rake it through the coals?

We /// we have to observe tradition. There has to be some way to turn this around so we can get backi to hating EA for dissolving Origin.

Hmmm ... EA planned a scheme where they would pay Fox News to badmouth a critical success and then EA would ride in like a white knight, defending Mass Effect. Gamers would rejoice and buy three copies of Crysis to celebrate. Nice try, EA - your clever, shadowy PR maneuvers can't fool us!

The over-exaggerated the issue. However the base of it is true - it is in the game, it is a violent run-and-gun affair (even if you're blowing away aliens) and it is getting into the hands of kids. Cooper may have been clueless when it came to the game, but I would say the most you can accuse her off is arrogance regarding what she thinks just "must be going on in ME"; if you removed everything she said about ME (which was probably 5% of her entire dialogue - she made some salient points.

    No.

What was going on in the Fox special is essentially book burning.

Bioware made a creative product, did everything they could to ensure that only people aged 17+, or people whose parents buy it for them, can play it.

If they can control what you watch, hear and play they can control what you think.

Maybe I'm just in a 'fuck you I won't do what you tell me!' mood, but either borne of ignorance, or malicious intent, they are trying to paint a factually inaccurate image of video games, and by extension people who play them.

Edit: This is a good read to counter the "won't anyone think of the children" whilst it is far from perfect, it is closer to being grounded in fact than anything I have seen taking the opposite viewpoint.

I am very happy that EA is taking a stand against this. Someone has to try and stop the false journalism and while most game developers probably don't have deep enough pockets EA sure does. While I am not a huge fan of EA in what it does this is a step in the right direction. If we could get out the truth about these games maybe at some point down the road Politicians and news agency's won't jump on the Omg sex/violence in games is hurting our children.

I wonder if she's seen the studies that calculate the average age of gamers at 33 years old.

I don't know many 60+ year old gamers who might be skewing that average. I certainly know a lot of young kids who play video games, so to bring the average upwards of 30, there have to be A LOT of 30-somethings playing games.

It was brought up in the Fox clip, however she rebutted it and claims that maybe its the adults that are buying them, but its the kids that are playing them. I mean c'mon, A lot of us hard core gamers will admit to buying games and never getting around to playing them. But she's basically arguing that ALL of us adults are buying games, but somehow magically, our kids snatch them from us and somehow they're the only ones that play them.

Gee, how does that work for me? I'm 32, but no kids. Damn kids not only won't get off my lawn, but they steal my games too!! DAMN YOU KIDS!!!

This deal with Mass Effect is representative of all 24 hour news channels in general. They have to fill the time somehow, and do it with stupid stuff like this. Let's not act like this will lead to public protests outside Bioware or EA studios across the country. So idiots get to go on and have not even 30 seconds of fame.

Fox News tries to hide these things behind "the poor children and apple pie." MSNBC, which is becoming more and more the liberal Fox News, tries to blanket everyone not from the northeast or California as Neanderthals. BBC acts pompous in the way they report the news and has a crush on Global Warmi... I mean climate change. CNN is just boring.

Business channels are the only ones worth watching, if it actually came to that. Otherwise stick to reading the news online from multiple outlets to make your opinion.

But really, this is just news channels in general trying to make mountains out of molehills. I mean, it's not everyday we get things that can last forever in this venue like the Duke Lacrosse case or Natalie Holloway. All the news channels are nothing but emotion driven crap.

And really, this forum is pretty liberal. It's not like half the people needed a reason to jump on Fox News anyway. ;)

So, this is really funny to me, because I wrote the article at Writer Garage, which is the test site for a much bigger site I'm building for fun. Alpha (wordpress.com), beta (code running on local server), live (code pushed to live server that I own). ANYWAYS, I never expected anyone to read it while it was still on wordpress.com. But, I'm actually getting a shitload of page views. But all of this is way offtopic, back to the topic:

It was very difficult to find any fucking information on the study that Cooper Lawrence references, and I highly doubt she has even seen the study. More likely, she read the washington post article about the study. I've been trying to get in touch with Professor Melanie Killen for the past week to find out where I can get a copy of her study, to no avail :(

Other questions I want to ask her:
Why draw conclusions from a sample size of 100 college students?
Why assume adolescents are the same as 19 year old college males?
    Can video games be art?
Can books/movies/theatre/radio/television with stereotypes have the same effect?
