OS X disc rejection error logging?

I am having problems reading a set of DVD discs on OS X, 10.4.11, on a Macbook Pro, and I am trying to use the dics that came with Rolling Stone: Cover to Cover. The problem is that most of the time I put the content discs in the drive, they get spit back out after about thirty seconds without ever being mounted or recognized. I have checked the log files in /var/log and no error is showing up. Does anyone know how I can enable logging and find out why my Mac won’t read these CDs?
