Arkham Horror is pretty awesome, yes. In a way it perfectly captures the "oh shit oh shit we're all fucking helpless" feeling. Once the players get the hang of it though it plays great while still remaining a steep challenge.
trent if you're debating whether to buy it or not, let me tell you it's totally worth it if you have people to play with
Is it a game I will need to get my 'gamer' friends to play or is it one that people that are only used to playing Monopoly etc. will be able to pick up on rather quickly if we already know the rules?
I mean some games we can get girls we hang out with to play but then there are RPG's/40k etc. that they won't even approach. Like I think Magic: the Gathering is one that most people will see as too involved to get into. Where does this rate on that scale?
You definitely want the people you play with to not have the attention span of a goldfish
Arkham Horror is somewhere between Monopoly and a full-fledged D&D group. If you know people who can keep their attention and interest up for longer than five minutes, you're fine.
I thought this was another one of those retarded "you just lost the game" threads and was prepared to be very disappointed in you trent. I'm sorry for thinking you would ever sink that low.

It's easy to pick up for most people who have played boardgames before. You can play it with just two people, though the more, the merrier.
Also, that girl who gives a reroll to anyone once a turn? Baaaaaaaroooooooooken.
Also, when I say this game needs a lot of table, I mean it. Especially once you start adding expansions. I remember playing it on a table almost 2 by 1 m and we still didn't have enough space to place our coke bottles on the table. Had to make do with glass on table, bottle on floor.
And lastly, some of the characters are hilarious. Read their backstories. Do it.
Oh man, I wish I had friends who I could play these sorts of games with, god I'm so fucking sick of Cranium
Yeah THAT
THOSE people
that is what I'm talking about. There are board games and then there are board games. While I enjoy both, I find most of the Cranium/Monopoly/Chess crowd will rarely venture onto the dark side. Risk Players seem to be the easiest ones to convince to come on over though.
It's like Magic: The Gathering. When I used to play that people would ask me if I wanted to play poker/fish/drinking game/whatever and I tried to explain to them that those card games were just so BLEH now, like they couldn't even compare in any way to M:TG. But, even as I couldn't return to playing plain old card games, they looked at my game as some sort of nerdery they were not to touch, lest they become tainted.

I've been stuck with THOSE people my entire life. The closest I got was when I played through Hero Quest with some friends, that was awesome. And my friends got into Warhammer for a while, but I never actually ended up playing a game of it. I did have fun painting the figures though.
My wife is totally into it, but we just can't seem to get any of our friends into it; we bought the Serenity role-playing game a couple of years ago and still haven't managed to play it.

My roommate and I have been lucky enough to gather quite a collection of gaming 'cool people'.
(No sweaty beardies/unbathed cheeto-eaters that might scare the lady away.)
Basically, whenever at a party/social situation, we drop the odd 'hint' of warhammer or whatever else. Like just a sentence, not enough to set off nerd alarms in the socially elitist but just enough--like the scent of blood--to bring any fellow like-minded gamer within 10 feet to us.

met a lot of cool people that way.
Just try it, even out of context:
"Hey, so...3+ armor save!"
Yeh, the scary ones are the only ones I seem to ever meet, I could've got involved with a bunch of those in high school but I went to a LAN party with them once and was bored shitless.
Most of my friends are geeky enough to get the jokes and find the humour in a lot of things, but not enough to actually bother reading comic books or spending any time playing these types of games.
"...so we're nearing the last lap when my SATANIC PUSHCART, armed with THE MUDFLAPS MAN WAS NOT MEANT TO OGGLE passes his CAR OF CTHULHU for the win..."
That sucks, ten. But they are out there. Most of the people we play warhammer 40k/boardgames with you would never guess if you saw them on the street or at a party.
My main problem with the bigger, more obvious nerds is that it seems they can't talk about anything else. I mean they just constantly spew internet memes and talk about their last D&D session VERY LOUDLY as if they think it might impress others.
Don't get me wrong, we are very passionate about our gaming and will talk about it, IF ASKED but we do not speak of nothing else all day.
"So, did you notice the new picture of the Slaneeshi Deamon Prince had 15 nipples instead of 14 like the old one?"
Too subtle?
Perfect.
See, even something like that,--said on it's own at a party--will not register (for very long) in anyone's mind that doesn't know what you're talking about, but to those initiated it's like meat to the dogs.
Yeh, there's a fine line that has to be walked. I guess my problem is I don't have a wide group of friends, it's usually just the same group of people, so I don't even really meet many new people, much less those who might have a geekish side to them.
What's kind of frustrating is that quite a few of my friends were gamers in high school, but grew out of it afterwards and are hardly interested in it anymore. We still share interests of course but it's a shame.
Oh man, I should change my name to The Lonely Little Geek, listen to me

Seriously, THAT has to be fun, right?
I made a TD for iphone and windows phone!
From what I have read it is basically that phalla game you guys play but you get huge, cool-looking cards to find out what you are.
Basically mafia with some extra roles like 'cultist'.

Try the WoW board game for the "holy shit how many tokens/figures/cards can one fucking game have, seriously?" effect
right but i play WoW so i might know a little about what's going on
that cthultuhu ut game right there is just crazy
There is so much awesome in this game to be honest. It's a bit token heavy and it requires a whole lot of table space, but so worth it.
whoa okay now THAT sounds like fun.

(i own like 5 MTG decks so i'm clearly susceptible to the dark side)

I need new friends.
Just import some from Asia. Quick learners those.

a good place to do this is a comic shop
i had a friend who ditched me and my other friend CONSTANTLY to hang out at the comic shop
I'm geeky, but not geeky enough to hold my own in there
I feel like a poser just flipping through the comic racks
only comic book i've ever read is calvin and hobbes, never played any board game type games or 40k
most i've got is MTG, which i don't play anymore because everyone else quit
also goodnight all
I think most comic store owners or clerks eat the flesh of newborn babies.
At least all the one's I've met seem to have.
All the great games and comics interest me so much, but there's just so much backstory there that it's hard to get into cold
I started collecting Ultimate Spider-Man which is awesome, and good because I don't have to worry about coming in halfway
I've only got the first 5 volumes though
And (back on topic) I've never really played any of the geekier boardgames, apart from Hero Quest, and Carcassone on XBL
that's where their business comes from
40k and card games
comics dont sell as well as you might think
Goodnight you freaky irrisistible tie thing.
I made a TD for iphone and windows phone!
It is an awesome board game.
