I have no clue what the tiers are in SCII. Everyone's viable, really. Some characters have trouble with others, though.
All I know is that I own face with Mitsurugi. And that is plenty.
I think the only guy who isn't really viable at the high end was Yun due to having like, no safe lows or something. I dunno, been a while since I seriously played SCII. Mitsurugi was my dude too, his stances were just too much fun.
Link was absolutely the weakest character in Soul Calibur II.
His items were just gimmicks which were easily blocked/avoided. The only good move in his arsenal was his A throw, and any non-retard would just break any Link throw with A.
Link pissed me off a lot more than Yoshi, but then again maybe I just don't know any good Yoshi players.
Oh hoh, good Yoshi players are some of the trickiest fighters outside of Voldo.
And goddamnit if I hear about how "good" Link is one more time...
Oh I never said Link was good, there's tons of fighters that present more of a challenge, just that I had less trouble with Yoshi. But if Yoshi really can be tricky then that means I never fought a good Yoshi user. We had a SCII machine at my college, everyone mained Killik, Cassy, Talim, Xianghua, or Nightmare so when someone brought in their GC to the student center Link seemed more threatening.

Even Yun is viable. An expert Yun player was demolishing the competition at an Evolution tournament.
That is, until he came up against me, but that's another story. He was a contender.

Sophitia has some problems, because she was built around SCI, when SCII really pushed the 360 degree movement more. Basically, she didn't have much for attacks that couldn't be sidestepped with a flick of the stick.
With Raph's triple lunge attack thing....my coworkers (at the time SC2 came out) kept crying foul when that move got used on them. They actually hated the game at first because they would keep saying "what's the point in playing SC2? the other person just picks Raphael and wins".
now really, from the top tier perspective, Raph just doesn't cut it.
I never complained about that move, don't start that shit with me. :P

Sophitia is near the top of the SCII tiers. She has an amazing array of moves that can track and punish for hefty damage.
Generally speaking I opt for the 360 version in the case of a multi-platform release, but the lure of the Dark Side was too much for me. I am looking forward to hacking away as Vader until that gets boring and then trying to learn some of the finer points of the other characters. SC1 still holds a high, high place in my regard, and I'm not even a big fan of fighting games - because I suck so bad at them.
And please keep this in mind:
If Soul Edge took control of Yoda, would he become a Dark Jedi?
Has there been any word on any differences between the two versions besdies Vader/Yoda? I mean like, performance/framerate/etc kind of stuff. I'm having a real tough time deciding which version to get and was curious if one ran better than the other.

Will the d-pad be important? If so I may go PS3.
I heard the xbox 360 version comes bundled with a handful of candy. Also the PS3 version will steal your first born.
In all seriousness, I'm pretty sure Xbox 360 versions have always been superior to the PS3 versions overall. At least in my experience. I have nothing against PS3 per say, but I don't know of anything better on PS3 than on Xbox (games with coinciding releases). Although, I agree, the playstation's d-pad > xbox d-pad anyday.
But he has a very fast vertical rising, if I'm remembering correctly.
*shrugs* I never had a problem with any link I faced. But, that's just me. I know he's lower tier, not that SC2 had a huge tier gap or anything. I mean, at least he is better than Yun-seong, right?
Assassin, who steals a bunch of Yunsung's moves is pretty beastly, though.

I rather liked Heihachi and Necird in SC2, both were good fun. At this point, I'm looking forward to the Star Wars characters for the novelty alone; if it's good for a chuckle, I'm all for it.
Heihachi was easilly the coolest and best IMHO. Probably because he already had an extensive move list and balance from the Tekken series.
Uhh... Doesn't crouch blocking duck high blows leaving your opponent wide open to your counter attack?
Yea... However if its a high that swings at a vertical arc (like a downswing) no. Crouch blockings main enemy is mid attacks and certain high attacks... like jump kicks, or launchers typically.

Theres been rumors spouted by fanboys of either system here and there ranging from PS3 framerate drop, to 360 controller input lag. I'm betting they will both be identical with only those that want to find differences finding them (in other words fooling themselves).

1up has had both versions for a couple of weeks and they haven't mentioned any differences in quality. I think if there were any major problems with either system's version they would have discussed it. They've discussed balance and the differences between Yoda and Vader, but nothing about control issues or graphical shortcomings in either release.

I do not believe your definition of high and our definition of high coincides.
1up is too busy saying Raph is cheap, cheap, cheap as hell to notice any differences.

Does he at least not look like he mixed up a box of Fruit Loops for his wardrobe? Because he seriously looked lame in 3.
That and they made him a ton slower, which basically ruined him for me.
So my roommate (at heart... we're currently separated by an ocean but come fall we will mate rooms like motherfuckers) and I had an argument/discussion about 'balance' in a 2Dtype fighter. Both of us conceded that we didn't know enough and couldn't come up with an answer.
So do you balance characters unto themselves? Or do you balance them in check with the other characters?
Example 1: Shotgun. You have an extremely powerful weapon best used up close and personal. However it lacks at long range and (arguably) fast reloading.
Example 2: Rock, Paper, and Scissors. I need not explain further.
Is it a combo of both? I played SCII a lot but never got really good as it was mostly a party game. (Ivy is REALLY hot drunk. And sober. Ewww.) So I really don't remember how the characters faced off against eachother.

He has his Vampire look as his 1p outfit, and the purple suit and red mask from SCIII as his 2p outfit.
But you can customize your characters to look however you want, as evidenced by Ivy-Amy.
Raphael...sucks. From what I've played of him in SCIV, he's got some of his speed and priority back, but he's lost a lot of good moves, like his LAUNCHER, and got a bunch of useless ones, like a "teleport".

You definitely can't balance a 1v1 game around a rock-paper-scissors formula. This would make tournaments impossible, as character selection would basically dictate the results. You can do that in games based around group combat, but even then you need to blur the lines a bit so that characters don't auto lose to certain combinations.

Raphael is considered one of the weakest player in Soul Calibur 3…
…And unfortunately for Raphael players, he's made even weaker. Raphael is too weak to effectively damage the opponent in a combo, so his momentum in a battle must be maintained by switching his stances -- too bad his stances are unsafe if the opponent knows how to defend them. Worse, most of his attacks lack frame advantage, forcing Raphael to block after each attack, and in turn, cannibalizing any acquired momentum.
Raphael's new teleport Strigoii Envelopment (A+K) isn’t very useful, because he can't follow up it with a decent attack! And Raphael's attacks are mainly linear, which can be easily side stepped by the opponent. In short, compared to everybody else, Raphael doesn’t have the tools required for winning and nothing to make the opponent scared.
I'm sad that Raph keeps getting hit with the idiot-stick so much... he was my backup in SC2 (behind Talim), and I've been disappointed in how much worse he gets.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense, but
We discussed that there would have to be a rock-paper-scissors system in place. An inherit, natural system, but a system that's there nonetheless. Example...Faster characters vs. slow characters. Offensive vs. defensive. I'm really not sure if these archetypes exist in SCIV, but it seems like something like this has to exist.
I'm just curious how they go about making sure the game is 'fair'. I think people will complain either way (coughWoWcough) but what do you do about it?
In the move design sure, but I think the complexity of a given characters move set is such that attempting to refer to character balance in such simple terms isn't accurate enough to be considered correct.

Assassin is based on Hwang, not Yunsung.
Fixed to reflect my experience. The only person I met who could hang with my Yoshi was my roommate who played the fuck out of Voldo.
This was, of course, back when I actually played SCII regularly. I'm sure I suck horribly now.

Block beats Hit. Throw beats Block. Hit beats Throw.
Soul Calibur also has the additional rock paper scissors system of vertical beats horizontal, horizontal beats 8 way run, 8 way run beats vertical.
Fighting games are like thousands of nested games of Rock Paper Scissors.
Thousands.
Yup, and assuming you weight the rock paper and scissors correctly it's all you really need. That and tits, apparently. Oh, and Jedi.
LoL: BunyipAristocrat
Needs Jedi with tits.
I hope there's no "make enemy fly into wall" challenges in SC4, like in SC2.
Dear god the CPU was so cheap on those.
