EDIT: I went back looking for a FF4 Remake topic and I couldn't find one, then I went back and looked through my subscribed threads. I was like, Wow, I already made one 6 months ago. Neat!!!

The Japanese release came out a little before xmas. US version is out NOW!!!! Go get it. What are you doing reading this? Go drive to your usual store and get this now. Game is pure gold.

So what are we here for?

Final_Fantasy_IV_%28Nintendo_DS%29_Coverart.png

This is a remake of Final Fantasy IV for the DS. This is part of the "Final Fantasy 20th anniversary" series of new shit and games. It is developed by Matrix Studios, the same team that made the remake of Final Fantasy III. The development of the game will be under the supervision of some of the original developers of the game, so if your a fan this will make you happy.

Well this game should need no introduction really, but for those few people that have never played it, here is some slight story spoiler for the first 30 min and basic background info.....

Story & Background
Final Fantasy IV begins with the unmatched monarchy of Baron using the Red Wings to attack peaceful nations and find four powerful Crystals that correspond to the classical elements. Cecil questions the king's motives after stealing the Water Crystal from the wizards' town of Mysidia, and murdering several in the process. He is stripped of his rank and sent with Kain to deliver a package to the Village of Mist. To reach the mountain valley where the Village is located, the two traverse the Mist Cave and defeat the Mist Dragon that guards it. Upon reaching the village, they discover the package is actually a bomb, which explodes, resulting in the destruction of the town and the death of many of its inhabitants. In the ensuing chaos, Cecil and Kain encounter Rydia, a young female survivor standing over her mother's body. Rydia's mother was spiritually connected to the Mist Dragon; the dragon's death ended her life as well. The infuriated girl summons a monster to attack Cecil and Kain; it causes an earthquake, which cuts off the route back to Baron and knocks the three unconscious. When Cecil awakens, he discovers that Kain has disappeared and the girl is injured. He carries her to an inn at the town of Kaipo.

Ok, now that you know some background story, who the fuck are these guys right?

Characters

Cecil (Dark Knight)
IV-cecilDK_sd.pngCecil_Harvey_-_Black_Knight_menu.pngIV-cecilP_sd.pngCecil_Harvey_-_Paladin_menu.png
Orphaned at a young age, Cecil, the protagonist of the game, is taken in by the King of Baron and raised to become a Dark Knight. Although Cecil is reluctant to master the Dark Sword, he excels as a Dark Knight and is eventually promoted to the command of Baron's airship fleet, the "Red Wings". When the King orders Cecil to rob the magical town of Mysidia of its Water Crystal, Cecil begins to question the king's morality.

Kain (Dragoon)
IV-kain_sd.pngKain_Highwind_menu.png
Childhood friend to both Cecil and Rosa, Kain is the leader of the Dragon Knights of Baron. He claims that being a dragoon makes him feel closer to his father, who died when Kain was very young. Although best friends with Cecil, Kain is in love with Rosa and must deal with his jealousy throughout the story.

Rosa (White Mage)
IV-rosa_sd.pngRosa_Farrell_menu.png
Rosa is the female protagonist, a white mage in love with Cecil (though too afraid to admit it), and archer of Baron. Experienced in healing magic, Rosa is often busy attending to Baronian soldiers who have been wounded in battle. By training as a White Mage and fighting alongside Cecil, Rosa is following in the footsteps of her mother, another White Mage, who fought beside Rosa's father, another Dark Knight.

Rydia (Summoner)
IV-rydiaC_sd.pngRydia_-_Adult_menu.png
Due to her innocence and pure heart, Rydia is one of the most powerful summoners in the entire village of Mist. When Cecil and Kain travel through the Mist Cave to reach Rydia's village, they kill the Mist Dragon that was summoned to protect the path. Because monsters are linked to their Summoners, Cecil and Kain accidentally killed Rydia's mother in the process.

Tellah (Sage)
IV-tellah_sd.pngTellah_menu.png
Tellah was once the wisest Sage in Mysidia and master of all spells. After a drastic accident involving his magic, Tellah retired to Kaipo. He gave up sorcery and forgot most of his spells. Tellah had a wife and a daughter. When his wife passed on, he become over-protective of his daughter, Anna. When he learned of her engagement to the "spoony bard", Edward of Damcyan, he became infuriated. He leaves his home and travels to Damcyan to confront Edward.

Edward (Spoony Bard)
IV-edward_sd.pngEdward_Chris_von_Muir_menu.png
Edward is the prince of Damcyan, soon to become the seventh king of the region. Edward grew up very mild-mannered in his royal family. Though expected to be an expert in business, Edward shows much more interest in music and became a bard instead.

Yang (Monk)
IV-yang_sd.pngYang_Fang_Leiden_menu.png180px-Pfanne_%28Edelstahl%29.jpg
The composed leader of the monks of Fabul, Yang is an undisputed expert in martial arts. Despite his superiority over the other Fabul monks, Yang remains dignified and does not bask in his glory. While training at Mt. Hobs, he and his fellow monks were attacked by a group of monsters.

Palom and Porom (White and Black Mages)
IV-palom_sd.pngPalom_menu.pngIV-porom_sd.pngPorom_menu.png
Palom and Porom are fraternal twins from the village of mages — Mysidia. Palom, the boy, is a rowdy, immature, and rude Black Mage, while Porom, the girl, is a sweet, polite, and mature White Mage. Though the twins are only five years old, they are experts in their respective magic skills and are sent by the Elder of Mysidia to help Cecil on his journey.

Edge (Ninja)
IV-edge_sd.pngEdge_Geraldine_menu.png
Edge is the royal prince of Eblan and the only heir to the throne. Though often cocky, impulsive and overconfident, Edge is a righteous young man who is not easily manipulated or led astray from his morals.

Cid (I mean this guy is in everything, am i right?)
IV-cid_sd.pngCid_Pollendina_menu.png
The chief engineer of Baron, Cid is very close to Cecil, Kain, and Rosa. He lives in the town of Baron with his daughter, who often scolds him for his workaholic behavior. Since the loss of his wife, Cid has especially treated Cecil like his own son. Having discovered the ancient skill of levitation, Cid is credited with inventing the airship.

Okie, so now that the introductions are out of the way, what the fuck is new in this remake and why should we care?

New Shit

*According to executive producer Takashi Tokita, the scenario writer and lead game designer of the original release, three quarters of the original script had been left out from Super Famicom release, but some of this unused material will be reworked into the remake, while some new events will also be added.

*New 3D graphics

*Changed ATB system
One thing about this is the ATB system has been changed in this to fit the DS’s hardware. The top screen shows the battle, while the bottom screen shows the party’s status. Like the original, the ATB bar will normally fill up, and you can choose which actions you want to take. The difference is, now you choose a command, and another bar fills up to indicate the time it will take for that person to perform that action. It helps add strategy to the game and helps you figure out how to time attacks properly.

*Decant Ability System (abbreviated DAS, and Decant Ability is DA)
The Decant Ability System is a new featured added to the game. It allows you take an ability (or the abilities if that person has more than one) from events, such as when a party member leaves, and use them with another party member. For example, if you give Rosa and Rydia, Palom and Porom’s “Twin” ability, then they’re able to use it. In one scene, it was shown that the party acquired the “Auto Potion” ability, and in another, Yang’s wife gave you the DA “Counter”(no more frying pan?:x ) which means that you will not only get the abilities of party members, but from NPC characters as well through certain events.

*Pochika, a creature that you can customize with DAs and friends can battle with them.
What is a Pochika you ask? Well a Pochika is a new thing added to this version of FFIV that adds many new features to the game. First of all, Pochika is a summon beast, meaning you use Rydia to summon it into battle. What makes it so special is that you can mix and match all kinds of abilities onto it to make it into your own customizable fighter. They added another step to its customization and allowed you to draw a face on your Pochika yourself. This makes it so basically no one will have the same Pochika. Later it was revealed that players will be able to battle each other wirelessly with their Pochika and see if you’ve made the best one. You can play minigames with the Pochika, which not only adds minigames to FFIV for the first time, but you can also make your Pochika stronger by playing them.

*Voices

*CG scenes (The Youtube link above for the love song shows these off.)

*The player will have the possibility to use the stylus to move around similarly to the Final Fantasy III remake, while all of the new minigames will require the stylus.

*A New Game Plus feature.

*Ability to see the thoughts of the party leader

*Jukebox feature to listen to songs in the game

*Areas being changed to simulate real-world locations

*Enemy AI added and/or changed/updated

*Map at the bottom screen (with a percentage to indicate how much of it you filled out)

*Namingway has been renamed Mappingway and Dubbingway.

*Wireless functionality (so far only wireless battle with the Pochika creatures uses this)

*”Auto Battle” feature to make battles go by faster.

Rydia's Fucking Math MinGame Bullshit Cockfest
Yeah, it sucks. Horrible at math, or just plain forgot algebra, or maybe your are a lazy fuck like me and the other 99% of the population playing this game?

Get your four numbers, then quickly close the DS.

Goto http://nenem.jp/dsff4/eq10.cgi

Then input your numbers and get your solution. It will still take time to get quick enough for a 9999, but it shouldnt take you more than 30-60 min.

Further Augment Info
By the way, how are you people distrubting your Augments?

I found this on GameFaqs, ONLY after I made my own list. Doh.

http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=939425&topic=44453857

But the nitty gritty goes like this for the three playthroughs.
SBAllen wrote:
Augment Explanation
There are two different types of Augments that you can pick up during the game, plot-related Augments and character inherited Augments. The plot-related ones require you to reach a certain point in the game's plot or to perform a specific action and they will be available. The character inherited ones are received when you speak to the character again (or someone related to the character) after they have left your party. Unlike the plot-related ones, you do NOT always get every character inherited one. Depending on how many Augments you gave the character before they left your party, you will get a specific number of Augments from that character. It works as follows:

Zero Augments given to the character -> 1 character inherited Augment earned.
One Augment given to the character -> 2 character inherited Augments earned.
Two or more Augments given to the character -> 3 character inherited Augments earned.

The twins Palom and Porom are an exception to this rule. Each character has 1 inherited Augment that you earn if you gave that twin an Augment before they left. If you gave them a total of three or more Augments, with each twin getting at least one, you'll earn all of their character inherited Augments.

An example. When Edward leaves your party, if you have given him no Augments, then when you encounter him later in the game he will only give you the Bardsong Augment. If you gave him two Augments, he will give you Bardsong, Salve, and Hide.

Now listed below are all of the Augments you can earn on the first playthrough in the order I acquire them, roughly where to find them, and who you should give them to. This is all in my personal opinion and in relation to what I state in my guide (where you can find more details on exactly where they are) which focuses on getting maxed out stats on your final playthrough.

I can't wait to play this, though I know my girlfriend is going to steal both the DS and this game and probably play it before me, so most of the new will be spoiled by the time I play. She loves FFIV. It's one of the only jRPGs she's played and liked, and she loves it. She's probably more excited to play than me.

    A New Game Plus feature.

I can't tell you how much I love that this feature is being used again in game development. This and some of the other updates have me pretty stoked.

Also, with any luck this means we're not that far from a FFVI remake.

My friend imported it, and I've played up throught the Mist village. It's better in every way than FF III, and they did a goob job with the voice acting. Hopefully the quality will remain with the domestic release. Even still, I wouldn't expect this game anytime soon.

As much as I can't wait to play this, something about the remodeling of the characters just seems off.

Cecil's Dark Knight render doesn't look menacing; it looks silly. I prefer the look of the sprites. The 3D just doesn't seem to have the same effect.

That's more like how I expect a 3D Cecil to look.

It seems like they went for a hyper SD look instead of something more realistic, and it doesn't seem to fit.

Rydia looks a lot younger and more fitting for her age. She's supposed to be YOUNG and the old picture of her.. well.. she looks kinda hot. That's goddamn wrong.

New Game Plus is amazing. I can't begin to tell you how many times I went through Chrono Trigger using New Game Plus. Of course there are consumable stat-boosting items in the game to find every time, but still.. maybe they'll add some sort of cool replayability (besides you can keep your level ups!) feature like CT.

Decant looks like it could be fuckawesome as well.. I hope there are many abilities hidden all over the lands.

Ooh ooh and Pochika... Pikachu.. online battles.. hmmm.. MIRITE?

Been playing the Japanese version, I remember in the interview they said they going to add back 40% of the script that was removed in the original version. I am 50% progress in the game now and I only see 5 or 6 more dialog lines.

The skill item to give you character extra abilities are nice, but there are no way to tell what the skill do until you used it on a character (its not reusable), sometime very nice skills are wasted on a useless character.

Oh well... I just surprise that it been 10 years since I play Final Fantasy 4 in SNES, and I still remember all the dungeon map and locations.

Ah, they said that they cut 40% of the original scenario, not that they'd add it all back in. They actually kept it pretty close, according to my friend. What they really changed are a lot of the boss encounters. The same battle plans that see you through most of the fights in FF IV will get you killed in the new version.

I thought that supposed 40% was the entire point of this game? Otherwise, why remake the game again, just one year after the previous remake?

If it's just the same game as before, only 3-D'ized, I'll pass. I already bought the game, I see no reason to do so again.

Yeah, this makes me extremely disappointed. I was thinking they'd add in a TON more that was originally cut. I mean, I'll still buy it, but... geeze, that sucks. What a bunch of cockteases.

Yeah, I'd kill for a version with all (or most) of the missing script added in, but just 5-6 extra lines? Pfft :(

What I read is that it does have the missing script, but it's not any new scenarios. Extra backstory in conversation, extra lines from NPCs, extra dialog during combat, that sort of thing. More like fleshing and supporting the existing scenario than adding anything like wow new.

This game is by far the best version of the game. The redone bosses are fun, the graphics are amazing, they did a good job with the sound effects, the voice acting is pretty good (so says my friend, a native moonspeaker) and the bits they did flesh out were well done. He's played every single release of this game, and he thinks that this is by far the best version, so take it as you will. The endgame extras are a little bit out there, but certainly a welcome change.

Well, yeah, it may very well be the best version, but that doesn't mean that it's not pretty assholish of them to talk about how much they cut and how they want to put it back in the game only to release it and have almost none of that in there. I mean, the cut stuff was the biggest reason I wanted to play it. The other stuff will still make it a purchase, but still...

Man I can't find any way to contact Square Enix that isn't a support email address. So I tried that one :P I want to bother them into releasing the game, just to they can be relieved when I relent.

And I asked this exact same question when this game was announced: If there was always all this content cut from the game, why did it never occur to them to put it back in during the many, many rereleases FFIV has had over the years? PSX, Wonderswan, GBA. Each time they've delved back into the code, and nobody thought to add this stuff in then? This goes double for the recent GBA version where they added in 2 whole dungeons and the rest of the PC cast. If all it was is dialog, they had too many chances to put it back in.

Now, if I never bought the GBA version, I would be drooling over this as the "ultimate version". But I did buy it. Now I'm not sure whether or not to feel screwed over because I wasted my money when they announced not a year later that a better version is coming out. But really, if it's only a few lines of dialog, then again I ask why they didn't put them back in the GBA version when they were retranslating the game from the ground up.

But oh well. I don't mean to rag on people who are interested in it. It does look pretty spiffy. But for me, it looks like it's the same exact game but in a shiny coat. And since I like the old coat enough as it is, there's no reason for me to get this one. C'est la vie.

I don't think it is all dialog. I know for sure that one of the new scenes is the birth of Cecil.

Here's a thought, maybe the dialog was cut for a good reason. Maybe it didn't add anything, or was just plain no good. Frankly I think the game did an amazing job with what dialog there was; I could sympathize with characters, dislike the enemy, and feel bad when something goes wrong for the heroes.

In the original English translation large portions of the text/plot were cut because of size limitations. And they fixed that in later editions.

Not sure what these guys are talking about, though.

When this game was announced, one of their bullet points was how when FFIV's story was being drafted up, something like over 40% of it was cut out and never saw the light of day anywhere. And how these "deleted scenes", if you will, would be put back into the game. So even veterans would be experiencing a new story or something.

Now, my original grievance was why they passed by the many ports and remakes the game has already had to put this stuff back (answer: $$$$ obviously). And now, early reports appear to be saying these new scenes are nothing more than a few extra sentences of dialog.

Either way, I'm going to wait and see just what all this new stuff turns out to be. If there's sufficient new material added, I'll give the game a look. Otherwise, if it's nothing more than a 1:1 sprite-to-polygon conversion, I'll pass.

Man, what a lot of bitching about nothing. Twice. Why you had to say the same thing twice, I don't know.

But what did you expect them to add, some huge part of the story that was missing? No, it was just going to be filler, more backstory stuff that they just skipped over in the original. It's like a directors cut of a movie. Most of the scenes cut are cut for time and to make things flow better. Directors cuts add them back for fans to see everything.

And anyway, yes, obviously the past few versions were released for money. No shit. But each one got stuff to make it so they weren't just straight rehashes. The PS1 version got the japanese abilities and difficulty. The GBA version got extra dungeons. And it's also not like the ports were unwarranted. The SNES is long dead. And a lot of older ROM carts batteries are failing and games aren't saving anymore. So hence the PS1 version. For fanboys and young'ins who missed it the first time around. The GBA version, again, added some bonus stuff, but also it was another way to expand the audience and make more money. Plus its nice to take it anywhere. Again, you didn't have to buy it if you already had an older version.

Now comes the DS version completely redone with a new graphics engine, FMV's, probably new music or updated music, updated skills, script and lots more, and you're actually bitching that it's not worth buying.

Then don't. But quit telling us you're not and why. You've said the same shit twice. Good for you.

    I eagerly await this game.
I recently got FFIII on the DS and it's an awesome game.
I wish I had someone to trade letters with so I could get the onion knight class and the ultimate weapons. But eh. Great game.
I like the model for Dark Knight Cecil.

    Here's the reply. Nothing surprising.
Thank you for contacting SQUARE ENIX Customer Support,

Nothing has been announced about a North American release date for that title. This is not to say it will never happen in the future, just currently SQUARE ENIX is focusing on other projects. I hope this answers your question and thank you for contacting SQUARE ENIX.

    OP updated! Sort of...

EDIT: I went back looking for a FF4 Remake topic and I couldnt find one, then I went back and looked through my subscribed threads. I was like, Wow, I already made one 6 months ago. Neat!!!

EDIT 2: this is 6 months old, all movies still work, but the info might have changed. Let me know if anything in the OP is glaringly wrong.
