That's funny, I didn't have any problem with Cecil's level reset. By that point Palom had leveled up enough and was OHKOing enemies with an Item Lore'd Fire Staff.
Oh, after the initial surprise I was fine.
Right now though, I'm grinding the fuck out of the Underworld. Golbez is just insane.
Seriously... I think the last time I got a game over in a final fantasy was in FF6 on the snes. I what they've done to the difficulty. Having to do things a little different now though, usually right after getting the first airship I head over to eban castle to raid the treasures and make the game even easier, but the randon encounters there now destroy me.
I didn't have any problems at all with Golbez. Just beat him now with an average level of 35. I'm not sure why a couple people here have really had problems with him.

My feelings exactly. FF games have been way too easy for way too long. I haven't enjoyed a Final Fantasy game since FF6 (not counting this one) because there simply is no difficulty. And I don't mean the lazy grind-until-you're-x-level kind.

That's probably why you haven't found any difficulty.

Golbez is hard until you realize you can full heal and shell up Cecil before the second stage. Also give him a neutral hitting weapon, and raise and cure up rosa, then shell her and have her full heal. repeat the whole raising, healing, shelling until the entire party is up.

Because you interpreted it as that.
Nah, I agree with TVs_Frank. Final Fantasy games have been mind numbingly easy for a very long time.
Honestly, I haven't seen a game over screen in a Final Fantasy since FFVI (or in the extreme case of the optional Weapon bosses).
Grinding isn't difficult. It's attrition on your patience. So far this game hasn't required any though so I'm happy. I still expect the usual amount near the end though.

Not how I did things, but whatever works for you. I just used a hell of a lot of phoenix downs, starting with Rosa and getting her to Cura the group every turn. Golbez is a bitch for killing people as soon as you revive them. After they got one Cura on them they never went back down.
I did get Rosa to Slow him and that helped. Other than that Kain, Yang, and Cecil didn't throw a single punch. Whoever was ready would use a Bestiary and then just summon the right Eidolon for the job.
Is there like a list that tells you what levels your character should be at certain points in the game? I've never beaten the game and I would like to not overlevel all my team because I'm using the wrong strategy on an enemy/boss.
Sounds like a lot of you didn't play FFXII, which I'd name as the most difficult in the series (and I mean genuine difficulty, where thinking about a strategy and executing it will let you win, rather than simply level grinding)
Hell, even FF6 was a cakewalk for the most part. I'd say 2 or 3 or 5 were the hardest the series had before XII and this remake of IV.

The only thing I found difficult about FFXII was entering into Zeromus' room for the first time and seeing that strange little icon on the left side of my screen. Never seen that bef.... OH GOD SKELETONS, NO MAGIC WTF?!
Never quite been that surprised by a Final Fantasy game.
Jesus fuck, Golbez is impossible. My party's average level is 45, my Cecil has Raise, my Rosa has Reflect and Haste, and yet he's invincible. All attacks and all spells heal him, he casts a million spells per turn, he Osmosed both Rosa and Cecil for 100% of their MP, he Bioed my whole team, etc. Libra/Summons or Haste/Neutral can't even save me here.
What the fuck is that shit?
That's it. This time I'm done for real. I'm not going to grind another 20 levels just to almost have a chance to deal him 1 or 2 damage.

I beat him and my highest guy was level 35. I think Rosa was level 30. You know that there are spells and items you can use to see what elements someone is weak to, and which ones they absorb?

He constantly changes weakness, constantly cast Libra and hit with the right elemental attack.

He doesn't actually constantly change his weakness. He only changes it every time you hurt him with what he's weak to.

I wish it was that simple. I know that I can Libra him, and the summons should take care of him really fast, but I don't reach that point because he rapes my entire team and steals all of their MP.
The cynical part of me thinks that if I retried it a dozen times, there might be one occasion where I absolutely destroy him with that strategy, proving me right about what I said earlier: This game is too hard and completely luck-based.
edit: With my current level, I actually beat the dolls before they merge, and Cecil still had 100% HP/MP.
But it's not really luck based. He osmosed my guys a couple times. That's why you have Ether. 5 or 6 summons should be enough to take him down, I think.

I downed him first try and my Cecil was about level 34 at the time.
The hardest part of this battle is getting your party back up off the ground after he casts death on your whole party. Having Cecil cast Cura on himself right away. Have Rydia throw a phoenix down on Rosa. Get Rosa up asap and get shell on everyone. Cast slow on the boss. With shell up, Golbez's spells shouldn't hit you for more than a couple hundred a hit. Do the libra thing. Have both Cecil and Rosa heal while Rydia, Kain and Yang send Golbez packing.
Once you get your party up, shelled, with Cecil and Rosa on healing duty, the fight should be in your favour.
DO NOT use reflect in this fight. It is more likely to heal Golbez than hurt him.
I can understand some people's complints about the boss fights to a degree, if your not thinking stright you will get your head handed to you and punted to the last hotel you went and with none of your PP...
...
Oh wait, that's Earthbound, oh well, point remains.
But yeah, there's a patern to every boss, not as bad as Xenosaga 2's patern nonsence but it's still there.

I think part of it is that people aren't used to debuffs actually working on bosses.
I do love it when someone will complain in a JRPG thread about how debuffs don't work at all in FF games.
Sure, all of them don't work all the time on all the bosses, but just about every single fucking boss in every FF game with debuffs is weak to something.
Slow is big in this game. Beserk is big in five.

I just love Rubicante. He's my favourite villain in IV.
(Tower of babel and beyond spoilers)
He just wanted a good fights. He makes sure of that by restoring your health/magic before the fight. Plus he was sorry for what the doctor did to Edge's parents which was a nice touch, imho. And he even learned the power of teamwork in your second meeting. Not to mention he was the only one of the fiends not begging for forgiveness when you beat them in the second battle.

It's funny how berserk has become a debuff in later FF games, because in the original FF4 (and presumably this one, but I haven't tried it yet), that was the best way to pump up Cecil's damage.

It's a wierd concept, I meen I saw death happen with Cecil's deathbringer sword a hell of a lot on the way to the MoO. Ok, they're regular mobs but death as a status is not a regular occorance in any jrpg I played.

You basically need to make sure he is healed every few fights and doesn't have a really bad status on him.

I always hated that fight. I can't even remember why now, but I have the distinct memory of hating that fight so much.
Oh, you'll remember soon enough.

[GAME ON] is for multiplayer games.
Otherwise it's totally pointless.
There is multiplayer. But meh.

Maybe they want to fly over to each others houses and battle Whyts. Did you ever think of that?
Also I just beat Rubicante. What an asshole. The key to this fight is completely fucking obscure.
But I love how they retranslated this part.
Edge: What? Where?
Queen: In hell!
