Picked this up today in addition to preordering the GoW2 LE, and I'm thoroughly enjoying myself so far (Cecil just became a paladin). I've never played FFIV before and had only a very vague sense of the story going into this. I can't really explain it, but something just feels "right" with this game so far. The only FF I ever actually completed was 7 (burned out on sidequests before attempting the final bosses in 8, 9, and 10), and I'm getting the same feeling that I did when I played 7 while playing this. There's just some odd feeling realizing I'm playing a 3D FF on a handheld. I know the CT remake is in the original art (which I'm very happy about), and if it turns out half as well as this has so far then I'm just going to blow out of every opening in my body with excitement for the remake. I think 4 is getting me back into the series, which means I really need to track down a copy of the 6 GBA port and get working on that after this before the CT remake hits. Oh, and Edward is a real whiny little bitch.

If you're looking for 6, Toys "Backwards R" Us has it for $9.98, with 20% off taken at the register. So FF6 for 8 bucks. That's how I got my copy and I'm enjoying the heck out of it...never played it before....

God damn, that's a sweet deal. Too bad the TRU here only has Pokemon and some shitty filler and tie-in GBA crap that no one wants. Guess I'm gonna have to hit Amazon.

I'm at the Dark Elf now, and damn is his second form kicking my ass. I think I need to grind a few levels out or something because once one guy goes down it seems to all be downhill from there. I can't keep pace with his attacks and reviving/healing everyone. This 90MP cap on Tellah is really kicking my ass.

Ugh....the tower of Zot....I ran into the sisters before I found the save point on the level....and proceeded to get my ass kicked because Tellah was low on mp. Curses. The worse part was, I almost won too...I had everybody down except for the stupid fat cow in the middle, and finally, her reflect wore off (couldn't dispel because Tellah had already died), and before I could finish her off she rezzed the rest of her team.

So back to the beginning of the tower again. Which isn't that bad, since I think I'm sorta overleveled. Its just annoying to have to change weapons all the time because theres stuff with different immunities.

    Alternately:
Prepare the battle by casting your buffs/debuffs (slow mainly) and don't really do any attacks. Wait for yang to focus 3 times and then when you're ready time yangs attack with tellah's strongest spell (i think I usually use bio instead of the elemental types) and cid and cecil attack.

It should finish him off in one round of attacks if you're properly leveled. and if it doesn't he should be damn near dead.

EDIT: I got in the habit of doing pretty much all my bosses this way since virtually all the stronger bosses in this version have both physical and magical counterattacks.

And damnit, boooooo to the localization team who decided to name the Crystal Sword and Dragoon Lance in this version Ragnarok and Wyvern Lance respectively.

It always looked so much cooler when you checked your gear and saw a wall of dragoon stuff on kain and crystal stuff on cecil.

Also I have OCD about things matching.

I wasn't worried about 5 so much, but I will admit I was slightly worried about the prospect of 6 on this hardware.

However, after seeing how well this was handled, my misgivings have disappeared. If anything, I'd like to see IX on the DS2.

whatever fuckwit at SE thought it'd be a good idea to make it take (potentially) hours to get the fucking rainbow pudding should be shot.

    In the face.

If I have this bad of luck with the tails I'm not going to be a happy camper.

I've now been going at it (the pudding alone) for a total of 3 hours.

EDIT: Wee, got it right at the 4 hour mark. /sigh.

I really want Encounter None before I set the game aside, that way if I ever do the NG+ I can do it in style.

I did get all the summon items though.

Just got through with the Dark Elf. He whipped my ass a couple times before I eventually came up with a good strategy: Cecil does nothing but heal and keep Tellah alive, Yang keeps him ethered between attacks, and Cid dies (usually).

That's what I love about IV. I love final Fantasy VI but there was never any danger of losing most fights, where Final Fantasy IV tries to kill you around every corner, but usually not in a cheap way. Once you get a good strategy you can win. That's how it should be.

Finaly Planted Yang's fist hard enough into that stupid Elf's skull to end it.

My Stratagy (as pinched from the internet) was:

    Form 1

    Tallah slows and mutes enemy
Cid Upgrades using Red Fang - he gets fire element
Yang focuses (he had fairy and Fire claws eqiped) X 3
Tallah Casts Shell and Cecil casts Protect
Cid and Cecil wail on Elf untill he transforms

    Form 2

    Tallah recasts slow
    Yang attacks for massive damage
    Cid keeps wailing
Tallah casts the best fire attack he has (Firaga, I think)
Cecil alternates between wailing and Healing
I pray Dark Breath doen't kill me.

In the end I got away with only Cid being K.I.A.

Destroyed the DE after gaining a few levels. I think everyone was between 30 and 33. Got my ass handed to me by Golbez twice before gaining a few levels (mid 30's-40ish). Went in and ripped the dolls to shreds before they could combine on the 1st and 3rd attempts. Caught a break on the last Golbez by getting a slow in before the real fight began. The first spell he sent out was an Osmose, which bought me time to get everyone up and stable enough to absolutely melt his face. Getting everyone up and stable was easy enough once the first person was up. After that it was upkeep and asspounding. Only bothered doing one summon on him (Shiva I think). Now I'm on the 7th floor in the Tower of Babil (which looks absolutely amazing). I probably don't need to mention it again, but this game is all kinds of win. I'm glad I waiting for the DS port and didn't get the GBA port instead.

I just finished up the Sealed Cave; one of my favorite little tweaks to the game is the character thought bubbles. I find myself switching them out all the time just to see what they think every few screens. In the Sealed Cave especially, Kain's thoughts are very interesting.

I remember this happening a bit in the original, but here's it's a lot more pronounced: After you go through the Cave of Eblan, there's a definite spike in how powerful your party becomes. For me, anyway, the game quickly got defanged at that point; Cecil, Kain and Edge got really strong really fast, and random encounters dropped the danger they previously offered. I kind of waltzed through the Sealed Cave half on auto-battle without thinking about it. I think I might be overleveled because I'm running around to 100 percent the maps, though—everyone's in the early 50s right at the end of the Sealed Cave.

The augments definitely unhinge the game if you use them well enough; I'm not even cheesing them a lot (I think all I've used is Counter, Fast Talker and MP+ 50%) and I still feel they make the game too easy. Next run, I'm definitely going augment-free.

Holy crap. I don't know if I'm just slow or what, but I never realized this about the game at all until Rydia's thoughts say something about it (post-Sealed Cave spoilers):
The whole thing about the "Borne from a dragon" part of the Mysidian legend, where it's talking about the Lunar Whale ... the continent that Mysidia is on is actually shaped like a dragon. I always thought the legend was referring to who placed the ship there!

    Are you serious Lunker?

    Seriously?

I think I figured that one out when I was still a grade schooler! It's very obvious!
Though I was cursed when it came to this game. I only rented my RPGs back then, only owning a very few SNES games. So basically anytime I made it to the moon I had to return the game, and lost the save. Eventually I had to borrow the game from a friend to beat it.

130 percent serious. Seriously, for serious. I guess I never noticed with the funky slanted perspective in the original, and the whole way the legend is setup made me think
the whole "dragon" thing was referring to KluYa, for some reason.

The first time I ever played and beat the game, I was still a pretty terrible RPG player so I followed this strategy for pretty much every single dungeon: Grind outside the dungeon until I felt comfortable, then go into the dungeon and proceed to run from every single battle inside. Like, not stopping for a single one. Then get to the boss, and then if I couldn't beat him, I'd go back out and grind some more, or maybe grind inside the first floor.

This actually carried me through the game until I stepped foot into the end dungeon and realized how tragically underleveled I was. IIRC I spent about 6-8 hours of nonstop grinding in order to actually start exploring the end dungeon. I have no idea why I thought this was a good strategy.

Grinding before the last dungeon in this game is nothing to be ashamed about. Hell it was helpful even on the FF II version of the game. Your guys need a certain level of HP and speed and attack to make getting through seem resonable, let alone take out the numerous bosses needed to gear up.

In this game it's actually made slightly easier despite generally beefer monsters because you can provoke the character with by far the best defense.

Well, I'm talking serious, serious grinding that I had to do in order to stay alive. I'm pretty sure Rydia didn't even have 1,000 HP yet. D: Thinking back, I had no idea how I managed to survive. I was still really new to RPGs, though; my attempts at Dragon Warrior 1 and FF1 were even more pathetic.

i beat the game on the snes but never got past troia on the ps1 and gba ports and i cant remember shit after that point. so yeah.

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I like the FF2us version of the Mysidian Legend better then the GBA/DS versions.

Just sounds more like an legend passed down from long ago from a different culture. The other versions sound too 'clean', if that makes any sense.

wait what? i thought that doesnt work against bosses..

Mom Bomb really caught me off guard. I knew the explosion would hurt, but it killed 3/5ths of my group on the first try.

    On the second, only one.

I don't think I ever died in the original until Milon/whatever-he's-called-now.

    man..
    golbez can fuck right off.

i haven't had much of a problem until this fight, im level 38 and i haven't "grinned" seeing how far i can without having to but goddamn, first time he kept wiping us all out because i couldn't raise everyone in time after the cut scene but 2nd time at work i managed to get everyone up and "buffed" and him slowed, my team shelled protected ect, but then i spent like an hour trying to work out which elemental attack could hurt him his turn with summons and it just kept going and i was getting the hang of it keeping everyone's health up and then my ****ing ds battery died. oh and this in the underworld in the dwarven castle.

i beat the game on the snes but never got past troia on the ps1 and gba ports and i cant remember shit after that point. so yeah.

its on charge now so ill have to wait before tackling him again. :|

Yeah, I was caught by surprise too. If I hadn't put yang in brace, I would have gotten a game over for sure. Fortunately, I managed to finish the rest of the guys in two kicks so that wasn't a big deal.

By the way, I think someone mentioned equipping Cecil with a bow in the dark elf cave. I'm curious as to how that's possible, since the only things it will let me equip is the swords. Is there an augment or something that I'm missing?

Every previous version of the game made bows a common equip for all white mages and paladins.

In FF IV DS it is exclusive to Rosa.

    N00bish question:

I'm stuck fighting Golbez in the dwarf castle. I know I need to cast libra on him to figure out his weakness. But when I cast it, where am I supposed to look to see that information? Lol.

It's displayed when you target him. It's on the bottom of the bottom screen.

Picked this up before work and I'm now in the middle of the Siege of Fabul.
I love this game. So Mom-Bomb... taking the general advice I had Yang focus during the first part of the fight and had everyone else heal/def during phase 2. After the explosion Yang was the only one alive with <100 hp... luckily all he did was focus (about 3 or 4 times) so one kick and the fight was over.

Also... am I the only one that pronounced it (see-sawl) instead of (Ses-all)?

I did this as well, but I like the "actual" pronounciation better now that I'm aware of it.

    It might grow on me...
But then again my girlfriend's daughter is named Leah. She pronounces it (Lee-ah) and I pronounce it (Lay-ah). They're both constantly correcting me for that.
