Mom Bomb really caught me off guard. I knew the explosion would hurt, but it killed 3/5ths of my group on the first try.
On the second, only one.
I don't think I ever died in the original until Milon/whatever-he's-called-now.
Same here. The second time around on MB, I had Edward hide off-screen during the explosion, then had him hi-potion Yang, who I think was the only other one to survive. From there, I just phoenix downed and healed up as quick as I could, then started up with the heavy attacks. It is very interesting, having early bosses being more dangerous than before.
So I got the game, now I own the original, way back when I was a wee lad I remember the original SNES game being a good year or two old when I went to buy it, now I was living in no mans land so I had to get a bus service to pick it up for me in the nearest town. They returned with Final Fantasy!
Mystic Quest.
Yeah.
Seriously, but you know what, I never minded that game, I played it a lot and enjoyed it for what it was back then. But I still wanted Final Fantasy II and so later on I was able to get it without any mistakes that time, man I must have finished it five or so times. Maybe slightly more so playing the DS remake brings back lots of memories, it’s a bit odd to see some script changes but for the most part it’s the same as it was. It’s fun, the game reminds me why I fell in love with the franchise in the first place and almost fell entirely out of it with the PS era which really stunk for the series. Yeah some will argue otherwise but bite my hairy Canadian ass if you think differently.
And yes that damn bomb blew up my entire party when I fought her, I don’t remember her being able to quite do that in the original, makes me want to almost go get my FFII cart and hook up the SNES to see for myself.
OK, I finally got through Cagzano without anyone dieing on the fourth try, is the level or two of experience really worth reloading for? Especially since I haven't even gotten to the bosses you guys were having trouble with
I was in the tower of zot and I got to a save that looked suspicious (it had red in the center) so I was all like, NOT THIS TIME GAME! and went on and ran into the three sisters. I panicked, but then I annihilated them without losing anyone (I don't think of cid as useful).
My unoffical ranking of the non permanent party members- Spoilered for obvious reasons.
1. Yang. With you a very long time. Brace and Focus and Kick is an awesome set of abilities, and the added effect on his later claws almost always procs. He (and his wife) are responsible for a ton of the games best items and augments. Counter, Kick, Brace, Focus, and the Knife.
2. Cid. Solid Damage. High HP. Can't take a hit. Bad abilities.
3. Palom
3. Porom Great mages. Would turn out awesome if they were in your party longer (see: FF IV Advance) Have great augments.
5. FuSoYa. Slightly better Tellah. Slow as fuck and can't take a hit.
6. Tellah. I love his VA. Slow, low MP. Stats that get lower as the game goes along. It becomes really sad when Cecil has more MP then he does.
7. Edward. No amount of being a hot lesbian can save her, even though she isn't as bad as usual in this game.
Well, I gave up on getting Bomb, and then as I was levelling the twins, I got the Cockatrice summon.
So, does this mean they pulled Bomb?
It means you shouldn't grind for shitty summons.
It's true, they pretty much suck. The only spell I really let Rydia use is flare. I mean, Bahamut now costs 99 mp to cast, thus breaking its usefulness compared to Meteor.

I just got this the other day and I'm up to the Tower of Zot. My first random encounter there had one of those frostbeast guys in it, that did its frost attack that hits everyone... and kills them right away.
I'm really enjoying the game so far, and I like a lot of the changes. The Dark Elf took a couple tries, and so did the Mom Bomb. They both one-shotted my party a couple times before I was able to win.
Well, I gave up on getting Bomb, and then as I was levelling the twins, I got the Cockatrice summon.
So, does this mean they pulled Bomb?
I checked the bestiary list, and it doesn't see like anyone drops bomb. Although I only have 37%, so it could be someone that I missed.
Hmm...I'm fairly positive that unlike the SNES version where any bomb type enemy could drop it there's only 2 that do, the black and purple bombs (balloon and something, I don't have the game on right now) on the moon are the only ones that do. The purple ones, the balloons, are also elsewhere on earth I think. Maybe underground?
But anyway the easiest way to farm them for the drop (there's nowhere to Siren them up) is the Lunar Cave directly east of the Lunar Castle. Damn near every battle there is the group of 2 and 2 of those.
No other bombs drop the bomb summon in this version.
Any mini bird drops cockatrice though. Most of the imps can drop that one. And I think there's only one place in the game (lodestone cavern) that even has mindflayers.
On all of them though, the drop is still .8% like most of the tails so well, good luck. At least they're not fucking stupid pain in the asses like the pudding princesses.

I'm sorry, but awesome songs + Salve that fully heals party ranks him way up as a support character, which as a bard, is kinda his job.
Finished descaling the giant and troubleshooting the CPU. I totally wasn't expecting the big identity reveal afterwards though. Caught a total Empire vibe from it, but it was certainly awesome.
So we're on our way to the moon. How much more story is there once the giant goes boom?
Golbez remains one of the few video game villains to give me chills, but that's probably because his slow plodding walk scared the shit out of me when I was a kid

You're pretty much at the end. You can do all your sidequests (there aren't that many) and whatever then head into the core. It's a pretty long and hard dungeon unless you're fairly high level. At the end is the end.

Definitely have to agree. Salve is absolutely awesome-- Heal 500 total points of Damage for 50gp? I'll take it.
Not to mention,
Anthem Of Life is pretty sweet too; can't complain about a pretty strong HoT.
And finally...
It's not as if his damage sucks for his whole time with you. After he sees Anna's Spirit, his damage (at least for me) seemed to go up pretty substantially-- did 60-80 damage plus chance to confuse. That's pretty damn good, I'll say.
Anyone notice how some things (mattresses and the copy machines in Highrise) are totally impenetrable? A steel wall, yeah that makes sense, but bullets should obliterate copy machines.
I don't know about you, but I always buy a bullet proof printer. Its a lot more expensive, but I think the advantages are apparent.
Edward is the worst on my list for many reasons. He's much better than he is in FF2, Easytype, and both regular versions of FF IV. He's fantastic in Advance and good in this one.
I suppose this is kinda sorta worth spoilering.
I had my reasons for the others on the list. He's in your party for two short dungeons and a minifight. Yang, Cid, and Tellah are in your party for a lot longer while even FuSoYa and the Twins are in your party for two longish dungeons.
The Twins and Yang are clearly better. Cid is Cid, and the two Sage type characters do have their quirks (and every spell in the game)
Edward is just a hot chick who splits potions and has a decent Hot. You guys just love her because of her hot lesbian love for Anna.

Well, I think I'm about done with my first playthrough. I'm in the final dungeon and I think I've done all the side stuff except for the Namingway quests. I just never found him again after he had the ability to watch movies. I can do his stuff on my second playthrough.
I haven't spent one minute in the game grinding and my characters are all level 69-71. I've never had them that high in FF IV before. It's crazy.
My guys are now all 80+ and I've just cleared everything (working on tails, resetting every 10-15 sirens so I don't waste them) and never stopped to grind at all.
I'd usually beat the game without stopping on the SNES version ~60.
At the same time though the HP/MP levels for characters hit a wall; I'm assuming it's the level 70 wall, that they didn't hit in the SNES version. My party has roughly half the HP/MP of my usual lvl 99 team in the SNES one. So the speed of leveling actually hits a plateau pretty hard ~60 or so anyway and makes those extra levels kind of meaningless because you pretty much outright stop gaining stats on all your final 5 after 70 unless you have augments equipped; then your stat gains are entirely dependent on your augments.

Yeah, I always said 'SEE-sil' as well. The voice acting is getting me to change my internal pronunciation, though.
Edit: Fuck you bombs, drop the stupid Bomb item already!

But I think I'll settle for what is now.
You can get fairly decent levels before going to Babil right out by the entrance.
