Okay, so the CPU ... what the fuck. I've had virtually no problems with any bosses in this game up until now, where everyone but Cecil gets one-shotted by the Laser Barrage. Is there a hook to the battle or stopping the attack unit?
I had a hard time with that one too. In the end I just focused everything on killing the attack unit as quickly as possible, then the CPU, and then the shitty defense unit.
Slow the attack unit asap and haste your damage dealers. Go full on assault on the attack unit until it's gone, then slow the defense unit and muscle your way through the CPU. Leave the defense unit for last, otherwise the CPU will respawn the other two units. If worse comes to worse, grind a couple levels by the save point. The XP is really good in there and it shouldn't take too long.

As I've never beaten FFIV before, would someone mind telling me about how far, percentage-wise, I'm in.
I just can't seem to gauge what part of the game I'm at.
I just got a key from the dwarves to go protect the last crystal. However, instead of doing that, I went to the Feymerch.
My guys are now all 80+ and I've just cleared everything (working on tails, resetting every 10-15 sirens so I don't waste them) and never stopped to grind at all.
I'd usually beat the game without stopping on the SNES version ~60.
At the same time though the HP/MP levels for characters hit a wall; I'm assuming it's the level 70 wall, that they didn't hit in the SNES version. My party has roughly half the HP/MP of my usual lvl 99 team in the SNES one. So the speed of leveling actually hits a plateau pretty hard ~60 or so anyway and makes those extra levels kind of meaningless because you pretty much outright stop gaining stats on all your final 5 after 70 unless you have augments equipped; then your stat gains are entirely dependent on your augments.
At least you no longer have any chance of losing stats after 70...

If you're getting one shotted you might spend some time getting a few levels.
The only character by that point that should get one shotted (because he gains no stats on levels) is FuSoYa and even then it's random.
The top of the battle is, honestly, a little luck. You might get in and have the Defender heal off the bat, sometimes twice, whatever. Then another time you can enter the battle and the Attacker will spam the laser 2-3 times in a row and totally wipe you out.
But yeah, as said; focus entirely on the attacker right away. If you went and got Bahamut before going to the giant have Rydia cast that immediately and then a couple melee attacks should finish off the attacker in a round. Then do the CPU then defender. If you didn't get Bahamut; don't be afraid to throw a good weapon or two with Edge to do the damage you need to. Keep in mind that you carry over no gear but Onion/Adamant; so there's no real reason to hold on to weapons that you can throw for 9999. (I'd save the Knife, if you have it, though, it's easy damage against Zeromus)
That's if you're planning on playing through again anyway. If you're just doing a one shot and want a "complete" inventory well then...I don't know. In the SNES version I'd go and buy Dancing Daggers by the bundle in Myst and use those as throw fodder for Edge. They did more damage than any of the throwing stars, but I don't know how well they work in this version.
When I return to the Baron throne-room and see what's left of Palom and Parom, pressing A on either brings up an item list, is there something I can do here or does it serve only to taunt me every time I select Gold Needle?

It is to pull at your heart strings and guilt you into wasting, gold needles, elixers, anything else you think might save them.

Thanks for the tips; it was as I'd feared. I figured the battle was changed up from the original, and in that light it's kind of a dick move for the game to leave Fusoya's "Focus attacks on the defense unit" dialogue intact. :x I'll toss some weapons with Edge as I don't care a whit about a perfect save file, but I have been hoarding the tossable weapons just for a special occasion such as this. I'm only around the early to mid-50s, so I'm probably a bit underlevel. I played this version exactly as I played the original, which means not doing the Bahamut/Sylph Cave stuff until after the Giant of Babil. I was always able to brute-force through the original, but this version? Not so much.
Or attacks are split between the equipped people. But augment slots are so limited anyway, I can't imagine a situation where you would have a space for 2 anyway. I sometimes find myself considering taking it off cecil to give him a different skill. I'd probably lose counter first though.
I'm considering giving Rydia counter/provoke next playthrough. She's pretty defensive with the right armor and you can't beat Counter:Bahamut with a stick.
Man, I am LOVING the tuned up difficulty from pretty much any other installment of the game. I'm fighting the four fiends proper at the moment and man, I'm holding on for dear life. It's like a motherfucking raid boss.
I've got every piece of crystal equipment except one. This fucking dragon in the treasure chest casts Thermal Rays every single god damned turn. And even Slowed does not give me enough time to cure my party.
This game really makes me wish that I had saved my issue of Nintendo Power that had Final FantasyII in it, the artwork for the characters was so bad. But then again I look at the art work of Cecil and Edward right now in the DS version and I know why it is the sex life in Japan is so bad.
So apparently Whyt's stats and minigame scores are saved on the cartridge independently of the actual save games?
I'd played a bit of the way through and then decided to start over and overwrote the old save, but Whyt still has the stats he had from the previous game.

Do they still counter if they're not actually hit?
Neither do enemies. o_O

Fuck the princess puddings and having only one really effective, and terribly expensive, way of killing them.

Ribbon helmet makes you immune to all debuffs.
Edit: Wait, is berserk considered a debuff? I don't think it is.
I never figured out what makes Cecil immune. I think it's Crystal Helm.
I accidentally had the adamant armor on and learned the hard way.
I looked at the FAQ and according to the equipment list the Crystal armor is the only item in the game that gives you immunity to Berserk.
Ribbons for sure don't. If the onion stuff does then I should go get that first. 1 bahamut + 1 kick is way better than 3 stardusts.
And as far as kick goes, mine only does ~1000 per kick plus my cecil misses constantly. He dies before kick can finish the round.

I need a way to keep Rydia from being beserked, but I don't know what armor does it for her, if any.

There are two ways to do it, both of which cut it damn close.
Cecil with
Stardust
Counter
Provoke
Item
Treasure Hunt
Action command Stardust.
or
Cecil with
Kick
Counter
Provoke
Item
Treasure Hunt/Brace, but putting brace on will double your search time.
Plothole. But it's safe to assume it's in the sky. The game has a number of small plotholes and I'm sorry to see they never really fixed some.

Oh god. Palom and Porom look like Garbage Pail kids or some equally bad 80s monster.
