And there are a few peices of equipment that carry over.
Here's the rundown:
Newgame +
What you keep:
-All rare Tails and/or the items recovered from them (Adamant/Onion equip).
-All used and unused Augment Abilities.
-All Map Completion Percentages.
-All Namingway plot completion.
-Whyt minigame high scores (Play each game once to obtain the stats).
-Rydia's item drop Summons (Bomb, Cockatrice, Goblin, Mindflayer).
-Unused Silver/Gold Apples and Soma Drops.
-Dark Matter (If stolen from Zeromus).
You lose everything else not listed above. In case it isn't obvious, that means
all of the following is true:
-Items obtained from map completion are NOT obtainable again.
-Items obtained from the Namingway plot are NOT obtainable again.
-Cool rare items obtained during play not listed above are LOST.
-All plot-related items/summons (including Excalibur) must be obtained again.
-Augments that aren't Namingway/Map Completion related CAN be obtained again.
-You can obtain a maximum of TWO Limit Break Augments.
That's REALLY fucking lame. The whole point of a NG+ is so you can rape your way through the second/multiple playthroughs. Even Tales of Symphonia gave you seemingly useless points throughout the game that you could use on a completed save to get different bonuses. Looks like I'll only be playing this once.
Err..
you can keep a ton of armor and a weapon that will make you functionally invincible, and one of the Augments you should get late game is enc-none. You could probably beat the game severely underleveled with enough of this stuff, so you can definately bring the hurt with NG+.
Plus, once Cecil has counter, kick, and draw attack (or whatever it's called, it forces enemies to focus on him), he'll be countering every enemy attack by attacking all of them, making most battles a cakewalk.
I cheesed my way though the bomb mother fight. Litterly I had Rosa cast protect on everyone and everyone was defending and Yang was still the only one to make it out of the nuke alive (It was something like Cecil was 20 (as is Yang, but I can't do much about his LV), and everyone else was 15-18) it was only luck I got Edward back up to Salve a Phoenix Down to allow everyone to get the exp), Yang was more or less the sponge the whole fight.
Also, where do I get the counter agument? I was under the impression I got it by talking to Yang's wife.
That said, I think in just about every "FMV" someone has to look like a loving retard in exchange for some to look awesome, in Rydia's intro, it's Cecil's "WH(at am I fighting for?!)Y?!" for the awesome of Rydia's "I HATE YOU!!" and in Yang's intro, Rydia looks as if she's trying to catch flies with her mouth the whole time and Yang bloody well goes Jackie chan on everyone.

I don't think you can miss the counter augment... yangs wife gives it to you in an FMV when you get on the boat when you are leaving fabul

I am feeling stupid here, i got Rosa last night and now if i recall from the original we go to Fabul right? right?
How the fuck do i get there
They did move it or something? i remember you are supposed to go over the shoals in the boat thingie and then you get there on a mountain i think or something.. but i cant find the "point" and ive drove everywhere i could.. damn my brain.
Help me
edit: nvm, i found it, i was looking for a mountain with a cave door for some reason when i realized i was looking for the mountain path.
Anybody have any tips against the boss in Tower of Babil? He's always able to pull off Reverse Gas followed by two casts of Restore every time killing my whole party before I get a chance to do anything.

It's really annoying.
Counter + Draw Attack with Cecil = Awesome :O
Hit Rosa with Kain and Rydia with Cecil to keep them healed. After healing via this method, he'll usually turn off Reverse Gas with another casting. Hit him with lightning and then convential heal.
The bosses are a lot harder (so far), which is a good thing. It's nice that they spiced them up instead of doing them straight from the old version.
I don't know if it's just my luck, but my encounter rate is insane. Like every 6 steps. On one hand I am constantly overleveled (bosses are still a challenge for some reason) and I have a lot of gil; but on the other hand damn dungeons take freaking forever when you have to fight dozens of fights each floor.
Another oddity is that the dungeons are virtually identical to the ones in the SNES version yet everything takes a lot longer. I looked at my playtime last night before going to bed and realized that I could beat the SNES version already compared to how long the DS version is taking me. It's not like the cutscenes are longer or anything either.
Odd.
Not complaining, I'm loving it. Nostalgia and all that. Before I could convince my parents to buy me a SNES (In the end I saved up gift money all year and my dad paid 50% of the system) I convinced my uncle to rent me a SNES to play Lemmings and FFIV (he's the one who bought FFI for me and started my downward spiral into JRPG's at the tender age of 9, or 8..it's been awhile) and good times ensued.
Also the graphics are great and the art is great and I think the style and graphics fit the game perfectly and if you think differently than me you're wrong and a horrible person too.
The music is hit or miss though. I mean, it's just arrangements of the old music but while some are really good, some I find myself thinking "man I liked the old version better". But I guess that's to be expected since I've been playing the old version rather consistantly (at least one play through a year, sometimes more, way more when I was a youngin) for over 16 years.
God damn. I've now hit a part where I'm definitely seeing an increase in difficulty. I almost didn't beat the Dark Elf -- ended the fight with just Cecil and Yang alive, and barely at that. Only to wipe on the first floor of the Tower of Zot, in the second random encounter I got in, with a party that started at full health.
Well, after watching a looong cutscene in the tower of Zot, only to get destroyed by Barbarrica, I think I'm done with this game. A shame, too, the new translation is so good. If only there was a way to set this game at FF2USA difficulty (or just "feasible" difficulty at the very least).

Weak.
You are weak.
Hang your head in shame.
I'm not weak. The game is impossibly hard. There's a middlepoint between the game raping you at every opportunity and having A represent the win button.

I haven't found it to be quite that difficult.
I downed Barbarrica the first time I fought her (though I could not keep Cid or Yang up throughout the fight).
It is possible to beat Barbarrica with ONLY Kain, as long as you keep him jumping. But you absolutely must have Kain jump on Barbarrica to disrupt her tornado form, or you have no chance at all. DO NOT attack her while she's in tornado form. She is weak against fire, so having Cecil equipped with the Firebrand (Flame Sword) really helps too. Throw up shell and have Rosa constantly healing, keep Kain jumping, while Cecil attacks and spot heals when necessary. She'll go down in no time.
And I am. I'm telling you, this game is just rapetastic. And bosses are completely unpredictable. I got destroyed badly by both the Dark Elf and the Magus Sisters a few time, but the one time I beat them, I mopped the floor with their faces. The game's just weird.
My biggest gripe right now is that I have to watch the damn Tellah/Golbez cutscene over and over in order to get destroyed by Barbarrica.

I used a walkthrough the first time I fought her. Didn't feel like getting raped again after Cagnazzo and Milone.
Fight strategy:
Basicly you want to hit her as few times as possible. Focus Yang up 3 times and Attack. Use Kain to disrupt her tornado form. Have Cid defend. Rosa should heal. Cecil should cover Rosa and defend.

During a cutscene you can press start twice and it will skip it. The first time you press start a little skip? thing shows up in the corner and you just press start again and all is well.

This(though I didn't use a walkthrough :P). She's easy once you figure that out, I beat her first time and it was only close because it took me a bit to decide on that strategy. Any time a boss has a crazy Counter, the best approach is to keep most of the team on standby and just kill it with your strongest attack to minimize the number of times you get hit by it.
Oh man, fuck the dark elf. He hits each one of my dudes for 9999. By the time I raise one, he one shots another. What the hell?
Is that before or after the cut scene? You're supposed to lose the first time you fight him.
AUGH I HATE THAT IN GAMES. It's pretty not obvious. Whatever. It's been a long time since I played.
But unless you've done a very specific thing in Troia, you'll still reach the Game Over screen. And there are no clues that you have to do this thing unless you already played this game.

Shit shit shit tell me this specific thing. I bet it's the reason they put an emergency exit item right next to the boss room.

Well, unless you're the type that doesn't explore every room you can find, this really shouln't be an issue.
Treasure is everywhere, even hidden in invisible treasure chests. If that alone isn't incentive enough to explore everywhere, I'm unsure what is.
You have to find Edward. He's in a room in Troia castle.
Seriously, it works on almost all of them and never wears off. That and buffing up teammates with Protect/Shell/Haste makes a world of difference. You can't just DPS your way through every fight. People need to spend more time thinking of what they haven't tried yet before they resort to grinding.

There are clues. I mean, people in the castle mention that they found a guy who sounds very similar to a guy you know and that he's currently in the infirmary.
a paladin make you level 1 again in the original? i seriously cant remember and was pretty shocked when i was dealing 7 damage to undead when this sword was supposed to be better then the dark knight stuff.

Yes, it did. Just keep fighting and you'll gain levels really quickly. Well, I guess, dunno with this version.

Yes, but in the original I'm pretty sure your stats were good enough that you one-shotted everybody on the way back down anyway. Now you just have to cover for him for a couple fights.

I'm pretty positive they weren't and that you were a defenseless, cowering rabbit for a little while.
I just beat Barbariccia. I only got the game over screen once from her. The second time here's what I did:
I realized that if I kept going all out I was going to be destroyed thanks to her countering. When she wasn't countering her attacks were pretty weak. I cast slow on her. When she became a tornado, I jumped and she wouldn't counter. I had Rosa and Cecil protect and shell everyone.
Then, I used Focus on Yang. I'd get him up to 3 rounds of Focus -- seems to be the max -- and attack. That would hit for about 3300. She'd counter by casting Lightning and I'd cure it while Focusing again. After the third fully focused attack, she died.
Was actually pretty easy that way.
Edit: And that seems to be exactly what the earlier spoilers say. Ha! Shows what happens when I don't read strategies for bosses I haven't fought yet. :P
That's funny, I didn't have any problem with Cecil's level reset. By that point Palom had leveled up enough and was OHKOing enemies with an Item Lore'd Fire Staff.
