I thought of this the other day, while playing Transformers: The Game for the wii. I remember that the average review for it seemed to be something like a 6 out of 10, sometimes even lower. The critics didn't like it at all. But for some reason, I did. Maybe it's because I'm a fan of Transformers, but I did notice the faults the reviews mentioned (touchy camera, most enemies immune to ranged fire mean you spam the same single melee combo for most of the game, missions with a timer for no good reason, among others,) but they just didn't seem to matter that much. Stomping around a destructible city as a huge robot just made up for all of that, and I'm currently going so far as to try and complete all of the side challenges, and collect all the random junk you can collect.
Something similar happened to me back in the day, too, in the form of Star Wars Bounty Hunter for the Gamecube. The reviews were bad for that game, too, and once again, I could see why: Bland graphics and environments, some absolutely terrible levels in the middle of the game, a high body count on every level that makes you seem like more of a berserker than the stealthy assasin you're supposed to be, useless extra weapons, a bunch of random tiny glitches and so forth. But dammit, it was FUN playing as a guy with a jetpack, and two guns, running into enemies, and
flying over them while raining death from above. And with the exception of those terribly designed prison levels in the middle of the game, the action never let up. Explosions and gunfire left, right, and center all the time. I ended up playing through it twice.
So, what games are your guilty pleasure? The reviewers hated them, and you can see the flaws, but something just makes you keep coming back.

Generally considered to be the worst Sid Meier game, even its designer has come out and said it was bad, even coming up with a 'Covert Action rule' to keep him from duplicating it.
I love it though.
Also Way of the Samurai, I remember the reviews for the first game in the series were...average, not terrible but not great either. In my mind that is the most perfect game ever created.
Some people don't know how to have sex
those people don't like Godhand
Not sure that counts, though.
The Area 51 game that came sorta recently for PS2 and PC. I think it got bad reviews but I just finished it and it was a fun mindless shooter.
Everything else I play is pretty much regarded as quality around here.
Kane and Lynch: Dead Men.
I had just seen Michael Mann's Heat for the first time, and really wanted to play through a crime drama. K&L came out at just the right time, and I loved it, up until the game takes a turn and drops you into a fucking war zone.
The difficulty curve was far too steep at the point, and I had to return it, but I still enjoyed every bit I played. Hell, aiming wasn't even that bad as they say it was -- I just chalked it up to "adrenaline".
So many things wrong with that game but I loved it all the same, I guess it was the great music, atmosphere and characters that didn't make me mind playing through the lousy gameplay and the drudgery of getting lost in muddly looking enviroments for hours on end. I finished it once and even got through half of the game again a couple of years later.
Also, Earth Defence 2017, fucking love that game, I only picked it up after visiting the ED2017 thread and agree 100% with the fans in that thread.
This. I even played through most of it twice. Granted the war zone levels pretty much sucked, The levels before it were very solid. All the complaints about aiming were bullshit. The only time you could consistently miss is if you were using an inaccurate gun.
this. for PC.
It's one of those games that has been so poorly reviewed that it lowers my trust towards reviews as a whole.
Glad to see I wasn't the only one. :P
I think it deserves a sequel with less guerrilla warfare, and more bank heists. And the multiplayer, if cleaned up, could be fucking phenomenal.

Nothing else can be more appropriate for this topic.
I know how to have sex. Honest!
Reviewers don't play PC games because they expect them to be shitty ports of console games, not the other way around.
The fact that you dislike something does not make it a bad thing.
In this case it means I agree with the critics.
The reviewers biggest gripe with GV was that the controls were too hard. You had to click on the thumbstick to boost (boosting was pretty much required). It was hard at first but once you get the hang of it the controls actually work pretty well.
Enclave had a slew of issues but I though it was fun as hell. I really loved the music.
both of these are oXbox
Infinity Mog 21 and over Free Company Sargatanas Server. Recruitment currently closed.
Admittedly it was bugged to shit in its initial release, but once it was fixed up... so amazing.
Thirteen years on and it still gets fan-made improvements.

Really?
There's a lot of good reviews hereabouts:

I'm also really digging Stranglehold right now. Even I can admit it's pretty mindless (one of the few games where I've skipped the cut scenes on first playthrough); but I guess simple kill/shoot everything games are my guilty pleasure.
...which reminds me, GunValkyrie still rocks like a hurricane.
...same goes for Kill.Switch.
You just gotta roll with it a little guys
Shadow Hearts: Covenant was a gift from above though.
I'd have to say Star Ocean 3 - I don't know what reviews are like, but I know every time I mention how I loved the game, everyone says it sucked. Maybe it's because I didn't play the first 2.
... didn't the critics jizz all over N64 Shadowman? One of the best games on the N64, in my memory. The sequel was fucking dire, however. I had enough time to make myself a cup of coffee every time I was loading a level.
I've also got a bit of a soft spot for Hybrid Heaven, a fairly obscure N64 rpg-ish thing. Plenty of flaws, but spin-kicking a robot never got old.

then you're putting it in the wrong hole
LOVED this game.
Sugar, putting it in the wrong hole feels great. Taking it in the wrong hole is an awful experience.
At least, when you're not expecting it.

I thought it had some truly excellent mechanics and even looked pretty good.
The problem was the designers only designed a forest and the rest of the game (how little there was) was bleah content wise.
猿も木から落ちる
Awesome, awesome game.
Irish half skeleton half snake overlord of hell for the win
I don't get it. People say they want a modern Streets of rage or some such game, yet when we get it, people criticize the shit out of it. Easily one of the best games for the PS3.
