So my wife and I just bought a new house, which has brought with it all kinds of fun new places for us to sink our hard earned cash, not to mention a general increase on monthly bills and the jump in size of the mortgage over the rent. Add to that the fact that we're trying to be fiscally responsible and start splintering away some money to go into a Roth IRA, and there ends up not being much money left over for, you know, fun.

I work for a production company, so my schedule needs to be fairly fluid, and changeable with short notice. Unfortunately this pretty much eliminates the option of grabbing a part time job at the mall. This leaves me looking for the holy grail of cash influx- I'd love to find something that I can do from home whenever my schedule permits that has a nice high return rate. But of course anything advertising those terms is indubitably a scam.

Right now I'm signed up with a few survey sites, but they tend to be pretty hit and miss, and have a fairly low return on the time invested. Anything appealing I've seen on Craigslist has ended up being spam, and I haven't had much luck on other job sites sifting through part time listings. Beyond needing flexibility, I don't really have many qualifiers- I don't care if it's hard work (providing the payout is reasonable) or mindless clicking, computer based or IRL- I'm just not sure where to start looking while avoiding a wealth of spam EARN SUPER $$$ FROM HOME FOR REAL ALSO INCREASE YOUR SIZE BY 3"!! type postings

Any ideas?

My mom and my aunt did medical transcription from home. My mom had to pick up tapes and drop off the printed product every day, but other than that she set her own hours. The doctors eventually switched to a voice recognition software and she lost her job, but I imagine the work is still out there.

Of course you have to be able to type really fast or you will be making like 50 cents an hour.

I've seen that option come up in discussions alongside survey-taking, but haven't really seen any listings for it around. Good to hear it has potential, though.

Once I get a nicer still camera, it seems that stock photo sites have the potential to be somewhat lucrative. Also thinking about trying to break in with a happenin' design on threadless, cafe press or the like. Seems worth a shot.

I think your best bet is just trying to get a better job. As you stated, anything that meets your requirements is probably a scam.

Start looking for upward mobility. You really should have planned for the increase in expenses before you bought the house, instead of getting the house and finding you don't have enough cash flow to go around.

My brother got a gig with the New York Times writing abstracts for old articles in their database. He does it from home and they pay him per abstract. He lucked into it through a friend-of-a-friend, but maybe you could enquire at some newspapers.

I was in a situation in August where I wanted a PS3, but not enough to actually spend my paycheck on it. I did surveys for a couple of days, but that was tedious and dull. I made around $175 doing that on my lunch break, but like I said, it was boring. Once I got tired of that, I started looking around and learned how to get sites ranked in Google and made some money off those. Not enough to quit my job or anything, but I had the PS3 (and a 2nd controller + a game) in about 6 weeks. Once I got the PS3 I stopped putting any time or effort into the sites I'd made, so sales obviously dropped off, but I still get $100 or so a month. I think I've made around $1200 off the sites now. That was pretty easy work, I put in about an hour or two a day until I got the PS3. Mostly it was just doing the research and writing for the sites that took up the time.

That's it in a nutshell. I went into more details about what I did in my blog, but there's no need to post all that here because I doubt anyone is much interested.
