It's been well over four years, but I've finally got the PS2 version of Disgaea. I'm only a mild strategy RPG fan, but the game has sucked me right up. Since the PSP version recently hit, I figured there was a good chance that someone else was playing through the game as well.
As a noob to the series, is there anything specific I should be paying attention to while working on my characters? Right now I'm using a fire mage, an ice mage, a brawler who I've outfitted with a bow, a warrior, a prinny, Laharl, and Etna. I'm also about half way through the 2nd chapter, but I've been taking my time and replaying past sections to level my troops.
I'm not as big a Disgaea player as many here, but my tip to you is that if you're just trying to finish the game, don't worry too much about how you're going to level up your characters. There are many good ways to do it and you won't ever get "stuck" because you did it wrong.
This said, have a healer and a gun user. They're rad.
Laharl - Sword - Tends to do the most damage, and was the quickest to get AoE attacks
Gordon - Gun - Good at range, and can pick off single targets Warrior (m) - sword - Laharls student, made it so that laharl got bonuses in his main stats when he leveled. also, good with aoe Warrior (F) - sword - Im not sure who's student this was. i think etnas. She was a backup sword user. Mage - Staff - After leveleing up my blue mage to about 90, i hopped him through all the colors and got the Star mage, pumped that up, and got the galaxy mage. the only spells he lacks are the Uber colors Cleric - staff - Flonnes student if i remember right. strangely enough, i never used flonne for anything i didnt have to. she was good at healing, crap at anything else. Thief - Sword/gun - My thief used a gun for 1v1 combat because they are hit based characters. but if i wanted to power level her, i would have her hold a sword so she had 99% combo with sword characters.
The rest of the slots were a random mishmash of story characters and test creations.
In any case the best way to make an awesome character is to transmute them into genius level. i did this just about any time someone had enough mana stored that they could do so. its been a while, but if i recallm, my level 107 laharl could do some serious damage.
Though i never got anyone high enough to do the cave of ordeals.
Make a character that uses each weapon. leveling up wep. skill and leveling up classes unlocks more classes.
Also, make an all man, or all woman team. If you get them all to some stupid high level (like 500) you unlock a super secret class.
Wow. The amount of stuff I want to do in this game is a little overwhelming, now that I think about it.
It can get confusing... Just dont make my mistake and try to play/learn this while also doing the same for FFT and Jeane D'arc.... christ, my head hurts.
Make a cleric with a mage pet and use both. Then you have a cleric who can actually do damage and level!
Also, pay attention to the elemental affinity when reincarnating your characters. High resistance to elements not only prevents you from taking damage, it also boosts your spell damage. So when reincarnating your wind casting cleric or skull, make sure they still have +50 to wind. Just wanted to warn you from making an annoying mistake I made. No matter what you do though, because of reincarnation and quick leveling later on you are never really screwed.
Don't repeat story levels over and over for levels. In the main quest, you won't really need to. Also, later on you will find levels that completely blow those levels out of the water for getting experience and the time you spend on those early levels will have been pretty much wasted. If you really want some money and experience,go to the item world! It has good gear and much money and experience to be had, with the added bonus of much improving your gear.
I can't freaking stop playing these games. I played through 2, then went out and bought Afternoon of Darkness on the PSP. I have no idea why they are so addictive.

There's a lot to the game, and yet it comes to you with time. The most complicated thing you'll get involved in is creating a character under a currently existing character, which affects spell learning (that is, the "master" learns spells the "apprentice" learns). Item-world is a snap.
And the scout class (and the advanced forms thereof) is my absolute favorite. Hook 'em up with three pairs of glasses to up your to hit chance (which ups their damage) and suddenly you've got a ranged powerhouse.
I don't see why people don't use Flonne, just give her a gun till she can support some mages and a healer. Switch to staff and when you have enough spells, murder some people (If not just make her a Braveheart junkie hehe.)
Theres always 1 brawler when I play. The fist skills are great considering they move the enemy a few panels away. Great for those hard to move geopanels. My only suggestion when starting out is save your points for average or skilled characters when you make them. The extra stats are always nice compared to less stats than usual. These are less hassle than the last two creation types that require a Senate vote as well.
I've started playing through the PSP version recently and getting farther than I did in the ps2 version. Some of the new quirks are nice (Monster/class info blurbs, gameplay tally, buying Item world music...) But some of things that they changed just make me cry a little inside.
I was wondering if I could get some Ch.11 help if possible:
It's the last chapter mission with those nasty x3 enemy geopanels. I can always get rid of one right away but I can never get both of them in one turn and end up having everyone die. Is there anything I can do or should I just go level?
(Has anyone done a Prinny-only run through?)
EDIT: Yes I was an idiot for giving Flonne a gun, it was amusing. Bow is probably a better choice.
Actually, while we're here, does anyone have a good site for strategies/walkthrus for this game?
Yes, I am reading Gamefaqs.
DoubleJump, for a short while, had released their guide as an 8MB PDF file. While the link was taken down due to people selling the file/link on ebay, the guide still floats around in dark corners.

I advise you to read a character FAQ because I don't think what was stated is correct.
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/code/589678.html Unlocking character shit. No sensical plot spoilers. Basically, just make every class and level them up to 10 and get bow mastery to 3 and you've unlocked all but the two uber classes. The only odd one are the mages. You need a complete set of mages or skulls at level 5. Mixing the two groups doesn't count. The new tier must then be leveled to unlock the next one. Other classes can have any rank tier levelled to unlock all of them.
And why on earth does your brawler have a bow? That letter ranking? That's how quickly they gain levels with the weapon... ie, how quickly they get strong with it and learn new skills.
And why on earth does your brawler have a bow? That letter ranking? That's how quickly they gain levels with the weapon... ie, how quickly they get strong with it and learn new skills.
Not to mention bows are absolutely awful anyway. Amazingly not worth it.
Go to the item world of an item you're trying to level, but are too weak to fight through, with some spare Gencys and a couple of characters with Triple Strike(fist). Set up a chain of characters that can throw the fist user from the base to the level warp. If an enemy is guarding the warp, throw the character right next to them and use Triple Strike, then walk into the warp. If the terrain doesn't allow it, use a Gency to escape and try again. You'll lose the item stat bonus you get for killing the item generals/kings, but equiping the item(s) will give you enough of a stat boost that you'll be able to successfully kill/survive stronger enemies. Makes leveling up new characters a breeze.
It took me a while too. I was sitting on a bus, Disgaea was on my mind, I was starting at an Emergency exit, but the letters "eme" were faded away. I needed all of that for it to click. I didn't say anything to anybody because I figured other people would have got it right away.
I've just got Flonne in my party. I'm thinking about giving her a gun and using her. Is this a good idea?
I suggest probably bow if you dont want to use a staff, that way you'll unlock archer by the time you can get Flonne to be useful (If thats possible.) She gets an A in bows but only a B in guns.
I don't think I'd have figured that out, ever. That's cute.
And I should really stop reading the thread, it makes me want to play again. I just pried myself away to FF:T, only to find that I had to keep Lavian and Alicia for Agrias' birthday lipstick.
I just beat the game for the first time this weekend and loved it. I was going to play Etna's mode afterwards, but I had Laharl at a much higher level than any of my other characters. Etna's mode starts out with level 60 enemies, so I'm going to capture some high level enemies, and level up my other characters more before I do so. However, I did manage to play a little of Etna's mode, and it was great. I'll try for the other endings too, since I got the good ending the first time.
The only problem is that I can't get the stupid black congress to pass any laws to open any of the new areas besides Prinny land, and it will take forever to bribe them even using the

Also, is there a guide that determines the likelihood of a successful capture of an enemy anywhere?
Weird, I just picked this up again after putting it down awhile back. Never did beat it, maybe I will this time.
Also, ninjas rock. I my ninja, he's constantly the highest level out of any of my guys, because he's just so damned hard to hit. Of course, that also makes it impossible to hit him with a heal spell, but that's what items are for, right?

Ok, first off, I'm 90% sure that bribing with items has nothing to do with quality, rarity, or anything else. It's completely random. Which is why you always just buy cheap 10H candies and use them to bribe.
Now, for capturing monsters, it's a little weird, but pretty simple. I'll just copy/paste from an FAQ.
Capturing a Monster involves throwing it into your base panel, during which
a battle occurs between the monster and everyone residing in the base. The
Monster is captured, when it's HP and SP are reduced to 0. If the Monster
kills everyone in the base before that happens, then the Base Panel will be
destroyed and the Monster will be left standing in it's place.
When a monster is thrown into the base, it will unload all of its SP as damage
onto random characters. Effectively it's an SP explosion, where all it's SP
converted into damage, which is randomly distributed to random characters. If
any characters survived it, then a battle will ensue that will attempt to
lower the Monster's HP to 0. The determination of whether you'll win or not
appears to be based on a 1 on 1 duel to the death with the monster. If one
character dies, then another character at random will try their hand at the
monster. This keeps going until either all characters are defeated, or the
Monster's HP is brought to 0, at which point it is captured.
This is pretty much the reason why when you throw a high levelled monster into
the base it will cut through all your party members, even after the SP
explosion. If a bunch of slightly lower leveled characters took on the monster
at once and he had a lot of HP remaining, before it was thrown into the base,
you'd likely win on the combined strength of all your characters. But since you
have the possibility of losing half the time or more, a 1 on 1 fight against
successive randomly chosen characters, would be the most likely answer.
So before you throw a monster into the base to capture it, do 2 things.
1) Try and get it to waste as much SP as you can. If the Monster's level is
so high that it has a virtual inexhaustable amount of SP, then ignore this.
Just hope and pray your characters will survive the SP explosion when its
thrown into the base
2) Lower it's HP as much as you can. The closer you get it to 0 before throwing
it into the base, the better chance one of those random characters will kill
it.
A good way to get around the SP explosion, is to create a LOT of brand new Lv 1
characters at the Dark Congress, and let them soak up all the SP damage, this
will ensure in most cases that your strongest characters will be fighting the
monster at their full capacity. It isn't guaranteed, but it will increase the
chances of your stronger characters survivng the SP explosion. You can have a
maximum of 104 createable characters in your army, so there's LOTS of room to
create these fodder characters.

Especially if you give her a Cleric student to learn the Heal spells from, and give THAT student a mage of each type to learn all the damage spells from.
I think Flonne was my major damage-dealer in the end. You just need to give her (and her Cleric student) a bow to start off with, to earn the mana to mentor the required students.
Does the story pick up? I was really enjoying the dialog at first, but now I'm getting to the silly "what is love?" part. I was really enjoying the wit of the writing at the beginning of the game, but now I'm not so sure.
