Yeah, the 6-12 hours of battery life seems like a bit of a stretch, honestly. Even using the integrated graphics card, I'd be surprised if you got over 5 hours using wifi/bt. On a lower screen setting, with comms turned off, you might be able to stretch it to between 6 and 7 hours, but 12? Doubtful. Although, 5 to 6 hours of battery life is still pretty good.
I mean, I'd love it if they proved me wrong, but it seems highly unlikely.
Edit - Also, even though it will have a dedicated graphics card now, I still doubt this thing will be a gaming machine with that processor it's using. It will certainly be better than any other netbooks out there, but most newer games probably still won't run that great. What this will be perfect for, however, is HD video playback and media capabilities. It even has an HDMI-out port... it's like it was made for it.
Asus has strange battery math. They claimed those same times for the 901, too, and I can't break five hours if I'm using Wifi.
Truth in advertising, right guys? It ought to be illegal to advertise something such as this unless you can, on command of a judge, use a retail unit to produce the same results.
The keyboard on the n10 looks really nice. I kind of think I'll wind up with an acer aspire one, though.
I too hate how batteries are advertised. To me, battery life is the amount of time the machine lasts while you're really using it. I wish companies would have the balls to advertise battery life 'under load.'
the current way (how long the machine lasts if you just turn it on and stare at it idling.)
under 100% cpu utilization + wifi
under 100% cpu/gpu utilization + wifi
CPU/GPU/WiFi are the big culprits for power use, and with those figures you'd have a fairly good idea of what your worst-case scenarios were for battery life on your device and at least be able to form a reasonable estimate of what you'd get in YOUR sort of use.
Instead of having to make some sort of a guess as to where TF2 will make the N10 fall in Asus' 6-12 hour estimate. I will be generous to Asus and assume the N10 has a better-than-average battery (as this is one thing that should really be exploited on the devices) and guess that you can play TF2 for... 3 hours on battery. Anyone else want to place wagers?
I'm sure you can buy replacement 3 cell batteries, pf. You don't like your 6? I was going to buy mine with the 6-cell because I hate things that don't last long.

I'll bet you that you could get 11 hours off of an Eee 901 if you put the CPU on its lowest speed and turned off Wifi, Bluetooth, hyperthreading, the larger SSD, the speakers, and the screen backlight.

Assuming you're playing online using wifi, I'd guess closer to 2 hours. Somewhere between 2 and 3 hours for sure, but closer to 2 I would think. Of course, if I'm going to be playing a game I always plug my laptop in, so that won't be an issue for me. I'm more interested in realistic battery life when doing things like watching movies and heavy surfing, which I would generally like to do using battery power only for the most part.
So, I'm getting a subnotebook next week. The choice was between a 1000h or an Acer Aspire One A150X and after reading almost every review I can get my hands on, the Acer won(despite the "impossible to upgrade" tag). Any last minute "Don't do it!" from Eee PC or Acer users?

Acer One works great for me. I got the windows version. Battery is about 2:00, sometimes up to 2:30. My main computer broke, so I've been using it at work (laptop alone) and at home hooked up to my 24" LCD.
Works great. I'm considering returning it because it doesn't play my 720 resolution anime. But then again I don't think my main desktop could always play 720 either. Plays normal, lower resolutions just fine.

Aspire One is great. Since the main complaint about the 3 cell version was the battery life, I got the one with a 6 cell battery included. It gives me ~6 hours of battery life. (windows claims it'll last 7.5 hours when fully charged, but that's a little generous)

Noooooooo!
Just kidding, you're fine. I mean, I prefer SSDs, but I know they're not for everyone. But make sure you get the one with the big battery. You would not believe how good it is to have a laptop with a ridiculously long battery life.
then again, the laptop I had before I got my Eee901 had a battery life in the "forty-five minutes" range, so I'm moving from one extreme to the other.
I don't think I'd be happy with the two hours you get with the 3-cell. I mean, that's not even long enough to watch some movies. The 6-cell isn't that much more money.
I'm pretty sure some are available online and Asus might sell some from their site. You must really use yours alot though, I can take my 901 to school and leace the charger at home with no worries.

I have been meaning to buy a computer for note taking in class. I am on a budget and the choice is between a netbook or a budget notebook. As far as netbooks are concerned right now I am seriously considering the MSI WIND.
Its got a 10 inch display and the keyboard is a good size. I would be getting the 6-cell version.
Now I am not worried about the size of the keyboard as apparently, on the Wind, it is rather close to a full size keyboard.
What I am wondering is a 10-inch netbook practical for college? I need something to take notes, write the occasional paper, surf the internets, and maybe play the occasional game/video. I have a few hours in between classes a few days out of the week that I usually use to study/read/etc. Being able to surf the internet during this time sounds like something I would enjoy. What I am worried about is whether or not a 10 inch screen is really practical for this. Am I going to be wishing I had bought a regular laptop? Is a 10-inch screen just too small to be useful? Will I experience alot of eyestrain reading the forums and typing notes in Word for example?

I don't have a netbook, but I am definitely planning on getting one. However, I don't think a netbook should be your primary computer, the hard drives tend to be pretty small, the speakers aren't very good, the keyboard might not be great for typing long papers on, doesn't really have the hardware to play 3D games, etc.
I think they're the perfect companion computer, have your desktop in your dorm room that you can do all the fun stuff on and bring your netbook around with you to class and everything else.
I own a net book and disagree with everything he said. And if you want a desktop, just plug your netbook into a monitor and keyboard/mouse while in your college room.

The plan is to replace my mp3 player at work. I also might leave one in my bag, and have one plugged in at home all the time. The battery playing music while closed only lasts about 6 hours, and its an 8 hour workday not including commute.

I disagree with this gentleman's disagreeance.
While it'll be fine for note-taking in class, and surfing the web, if you want to be comfortable at your desk when writing term papers/essays, you'll need a conventional keyboard/mouse/monitor.
Play the occasional video? Sure, no problem. Play the occasional game? Not unless your weapon of choice is based on the Quake III engine, or only has two dimensions. :P
Honestly, if you can swing the money, it'd be great to have a netbook for class and a low-end desktop for the room. Throw a Radeon HD4670 into it if you want to get your game on (at moderate resolution/details) and you're all set.

Now I'm trying to choose between the 901 20G and the 1000H w/ 160GB HD.
If the 901's keyboard is anything like the 701 I had, I don't think I'll like it.
The internal storage will prevent me from having to carry an extra drive for videos, music and photos.
I cut pieces of paper with the Eee's dimensions and the 1000H isn't that much bigger, and an extra 10 ounces probably isn't such a big deal.

Honestly 10 inches is fucking small as it is, I can't imagine working on anything smaller than that. 9 inches isn't that much smaller but you are getting a bigger keyboard, bigger screen, and better touchpad with the 1000H over the 901. Not to mention the differences in HD space are vast. The 1000H keyboard is supposed to be like 85-95% the size of a regular keyboard.
