Yah but didn't you have to leave your PS3 on all the time to do that?

Not at all. In fact, you can turn the PS3 on and off remotely from the PSP via Remote Start. The PS3 does use alittle bit of power when it is "off" when remote start is activated (because the WiFi is always on), but I suspect the power consumption is slightly more than the Wii standby mode when Wiiconnect24 is activated.
    Aoi wrote: »

That works well for you? I've tried on a few occasions now to watch stuff over wireless with remote play from a couple rooms away from my PS3, and the video playback through remote play on my PSP is chunky as hell.

It really depends on your WiFi signal strength, which is affected by distance and the building material the signal passes through. Obviously, if you've got low signal strength, your connection speed and quality degrades. Boosting transmission power via external antennas or third party firmware helps quite a bit.

Amusingly, I actually got better quality connecting through internet from another hotspot (my neighbor's unprotected router, for instance) with good signal strength than my own internal WLAN when I get poor signal strength.

I'm actually thinking about picking up a PS3 if that rumored price drop happens. I need a Bluray player and Uncharted looks amazing.

I bought a PS3 a few days ago too, and whilst I don't have buyers' remorse as such (being accustomed to spending a lot of money on disappointing tech), the PS3 has been particularly disappointing so far. Why do I have to install games on a console? Why do I have to agree to the same EULA over and over again? Why are downloads so absurdly slow? Why have they given it a £1 controller designed for tiny tiny bat claws? Why does a pretty slick bit of tech have such an awful user experience?

Return it? The PS3 is a great value if you don't own a 360. If you have a 360 then it really depends on how much bluray, media center and its few good exclusives mean to you.

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

This is sound advice. I own a 360. I bought a PS3 for blu-ray and the exclusives. Owning both also lets me pick the best version of multi-platform games to get.

The only games you install are the PSN games. I've never had to install a disc game on the console.

The controller is the same size & design since the PS1. They've only changed the L2 & R2 trigger buttons slightly. It's the light weight of the controller that throws people off. Once the duel shock3 comes out the controllers will get some more weight.

Yeah, I've considered returning it. But, Sony could fix the software problems if they ever got their shit together, and hopefully there'll be a decent third-party controller. I'm happy enough keeping it just for Blu-Ray and exclusives, although that said I'm having a hard time thinking of any exclusives I'm interested in. I'm just surprised at how utterly horrible the experience of using a PS3 is.

Falsehood. Ratchet and Clank made me sit back and watch a progress bar on first run.

Your "slightly" is my "completely fucked up". The L2/R2 buttons are impossible to depress fully without some serious hand cramp, and it becomes incredibly difficult to hit X when I'm holding R2 down as a result. It's because they angle back in at a 45 degree angle, which I find impossible to hold. Maybe it's just my big meaty man-sized hands.

Also, the new trigger buttons are awesome for racing games in terms of controlling your acceleration.

In any case, the PS3 might not be for you if you can't appreciate games like Ratchet, Uncharted, Folklore and Warhawk (and to a lesser extent, Heavenly Sword).

Personally, I think it's a kickass system, and the blu-ray capabilities are a huge bonus. But, to each his own.

Warhawk is actually the game that's pissed me off, because the PS3 won't let me play it.

I downloaded it overnight as, y'know, PSN is slower than a granny on roofies.
Came home tonight and decided to give it a go, forgetting that I have to install games for some reason.
Half an hour or whatever later passes, and I decide again to give it a go.
Get told I need to download and install an update for the game I just downloaded.
Wait 45 minutes while I download all of 40MB.
Come on here to moan while the installer crawls along.

To be clear, I think the PS3 is great hardware, I liked Uncharted a lot, enjoying Ratchet and Clank, and I'm surprised to find that the PS3 seems to be a much better media box than my 360.

But, the PSN and controller (particularly with the pointless tacked-on motion "controls") are awful awful awful. That is all.

I like it, but I can definitely see why critics would be hard on it. It's pretty linear, a bit slow, and a bit repetitive, but for some reason I really like it. The graphics are gorgeous, the gamplay is decent, and it actually has a somewhat clever use for the motion controls that I actually enjoy using it for (the only other game i've said that about so far is Heavenly Sword so far). But yeah, give it a rent, it definitely seems like one of those love it or hate it titles.

I liked it. I only got about halfway through on a rental, but I was surprised at how good it was. Given it's a Japanese game I was sort of expecting 14-year-old boy saves the world, but it didn't turn out like that at all. The story's got a really cool mystery thing going on.

If I have to say anything bad about it, it's that after a while the gameplay gets a bit repetitive, but I think the story is strong enough to keep you playing. Also, the art direction is fantastic.

@Kerin: Try using the motion controls in a game that implements them in an intelligent manner, like Uncharted or flOw.

Also I don't see how you have a problem with L2/R2 - I've got some massive hands and have no trouble with them. (For reference I can hit 3 fret buttons on the Rock Band guitar with 1 finger pretty easily.)

While I'm not gonna sit here and say PSN is fast as shit (as even their store interface is slow), I tested it out by downloading DMC4 simultaneously for the PS3 and 360. Literally hit "download" for both consoles at the same time.

The PS3 download finished almost 4 minutes before the 360 download.

No, thats not why the PSX controller sucks. It sucks because it puts the analog stick, the part you use more than any other part of the controller, in the most awkward position. Why the fuck haven't the d-pad and analog stick been switched? There's no fucking justification for it.

I apologize ahead of time if this question has been answered elsewhere, but this seems like as good a place as any to posit it. Can anyone succinctly explain the lack of rumble in the retail PS3 SKUs?

I was under the impression that the legal issues had been resolved, and that support for rumble was patched into many of the games, but it would seem, based on my cursory looks, that the only way one would acquire a Dualshock 3 is via import.

I own a 360 and a Wii, and love them both. I would very much like to own a PS3, and love it as well. By now, there are enough exclusives I'm interested in to justify it; however, the lack of a packed in rumble controller is quite simply a deal-breaker for me. Are there plans to include the rumble controller in the new SKUs rumored to be forthcoming?

TL;DR - Why can I no haz rumble?

Sony's a crying baby and didn't want to pay Immersion for their patent on rumble. Then they claimed "technical reasons" why you couldn't have rumble and motion sensing in one controller.

    Meanwhile, in Nintendoland...

Eventually Sony and Immersion kissed and made up, and now you have the DualShock 3.

Then they make a comment about having big hands, whether that's meant to be a joke or not I find it foolish. I never noticed this as I don't "grip" the Sony controllers I let them rest in my hands. If that makes sense to anyone. Compared to the old design I find the new trigger buttons more comfortable & easier to use.

Now the MS controllers you grip by design. I have one of the Duke controllers for my xbox1 and I didn't have a problem with the size, for the most part I actually like it. My complaint was slight announce at the D-pad & the placement of the white & black buttons. I hate the 360's D-pad.

I don't mind the position of the sticks on the Dual Shock/2/3/6-axis so much as I don't like the overall unergonomic design of the pad and the handles. It doesn't provide much support and the handles don't conform to a natural shape of a hand holding the thing.

I have a third party controller for my PS2 that I think is vastly superior to the Dual Shock design in terms of ergonomics. By having more ergonomic handles and a stepped-down R2/L2, it provides much more support and is more comfortable.

There's also the Logitech controller for the PS2. It's a far better and more comfortable design than the Dual Shocks. But I still prefer to have L2/R2 stepped down because it lets your middle fingers provide support.

As far as button layout is concerned, I think it's fine the way it is. Although I can completely understand how people find the position of the analog stick / dpad to be unnatural or illogical.

I've always assumed that the D-Pad / Stick configuration is like that because they wanted the two sticks in symmetrical positions on the controller.

Not that I necessarily agree that it's the best idea, but I'm sure that's their reason for staying like that.

It's probably the way you're holding it.

Well, evidently; I hold it in the way most comfortable for me. That's not posed a problem with the original PS1 pad (sans analogue sticks) and the PS2 dualshock, but now there's analogue triggers I'm screwed. The way I've held the pad for the last ten years means I can't hold the triggers all the way in without the pad almost slipping out of my hands. So, I have to hold it in a different way now, and that way is very much like a shrunken claw. And it leaves me basically unable to hit the triangle button at all, and struggling with the other face buttons.

Obviously the SiXaXiS (or whatever) works for you, and I'm happy for you, really I am. But for me it's so uncomfortable it might as well be wedged up my arse along with a Jaguar controller.

I love my PS3. It's a truly fantastic Blu-ray player. I've also heard it can play games, but I've not seen anything to support that rumour.

    ...

Actually, that's a bit unkind. I am really enjoying Uncharted, and Super Stardust HD is fantastic. I also picked up the PS3 version of Oblivion GOTY Edition, which is rather good (I had originally planned to grab the 360 version, but... well, you lot know about the problems I've had with Microsoft). But hoenstly, mostly the PS3 is used in our household as a very nice Blu-ray player.

Regardless of how much the sixaxis and dual shock 3 suck, I still think the PS3 is an excellent and underrated system. I really hated the PS2, to be honest, and though it had the best games last gen, it was arguably the shittiest system. I hated how poor it's interface was, and how overall poorly constructed it was. The PS3 is vastly improved upon the PS2 and I consider it a great system.

Although, to be honest, the differences between the 2 "next gen" systems in terms of power is smaller than it's ever been before. Most multiplayer games have been identical.

What was so bad about the PS2 interface? You just popped a game in and played, or put a movie in and watched. It wasn't a media player, so it's not like an interface was by any means necessary or critical.

Buy Warhawk and all buyers remorse will wash away into a sea of awesome.

    Warhawk is the PS3s Catan.

It just felt sloppy. Compared to the GCN and Xbox's interface, and even the dreamcast interface, it was just so far behind.
