Modern scanner descreening technology

What does everyone here use for descreening scanned pictures? I used to have an ancient beast of a scanner that my grandpa got free with his first computer. It was loud and huge and slow, but it made damn fine scans. It died recently and I've picked up a new one. The problem is it doesn't descreen the image worth a damn. Here's what I'm talking about:

Notice how the orange on the left is blended into a solid color while the orange on the right is reduced to a series of dots (as it is on the actual printed box). This is with the new scanner's "descreen" mode on. So I guess I'm looking for a third party software solution to the problem, preferably a photoshop plugin since that's what I use. I have a few dozen boxes I want to turn into ds cases.

Help me.
