Ok, so maybe not so evil, I actually don't mind smokers since all of my friends are heavy smokers. However how badly are they going to damage my electronics if I continue to let them smoke in the entertainment room. I never really thought about it before until I went to clean my screens and had to practically scrape that icky nicotine film off. Should I make them smoke in one of the other rooms of the house, or outside altogether. Or does smoking not really hurt electronics other than the screens? I could deal with cleaning off the screens.
If your house is regularily filled with a haze, similar to a bar in a hong kong action film, then yeah, its probably best to put a stop to that. If its one dude smoking one cigarette an hour, your stuff will be fine.
I smoke in my living room, and so does my roommate, where all our stuff is, and i dont have any problems with any of my electronics.
Sadly there all pretty much hard core chain smokers. It is my house so I could stop it and put them all outside, but would out of the electronic room be sufficient?

I'm a fan of smoking outside. I don't have a problem with smokers, I just think the outdoors is the place to do it. People can do whatever the hell they want in their own home, but in mine they smoke outside, and they don't do that "I'm exhaling smoke and tossing my cigarette as I walk through the door so the house still fucking smells like cigarettes"
edit: it's still going to travel through the vents if they're in another room, but yeah, at least it would be better. Why not set up a smoking room, like in days of old. Have it well ventilated, or have an open window, and then you can even smoke cigars in there.
If the room is a cloud all the time your stuff is likely to suffer for it, but it's not like if I smoke a cigarette in my apartment my PS2 is going to catch fire. And actually if you have the ability to clean out the insides (like when you clean dust out of a computer case, exactly like that in fact) doing so regularly would be a good idea regardless of smokers.

Trust me, for personal reasons my health isn't a concern, my electronics will almost surely outlive me. I do appreciate your concern though.
um, alright then. Well, to answer your question, moving to another room will help a good bit. Just make sure the other room has a window as well. Also, invest in one of those ionizer things that help to keep the air clean.
Discoloration will happen. I remember my friends 360 after a year being in his room. We had that place filled with various smoke just about all the time. Damn thing was so yellow.
Being a cigarette smoker myself I'll say that if we need to have a smoke we don't care all too much where we have to have it. I've got a friend that just puts us in the bathroom with the extractor fan on if it's winter and freezing outside.
Yeah even in my own place I rarely smoke inside unless I'm playing a strategy-game. Because I mean come on how am I going to strategerize properly if I'm not smoking? I've seen war-movies, I know how this is done...
Um, but yeah, it's generally not a big deal for smokers who aren't assholes to go outside to smoke. I never light up in other people's homes or cars unless I'm invited to. This is a perfectly reasonable minimum expectation to hold smokers to.
When I was doing tech sup we'd get in towers every now and then and we could tell they were from a smoker's place because of the thick cake of dust on the interior and the absolutely horrid stench inside. I smoke a pipe (because I'm kind of a prick, mostly) so this isn't an antismoker statement; it's more of an anti-not cleaning your stuff every once in a while, statement.
If you keep things clean you shouldn't have a problem. Get some compressed air and blow out any fans in your electronics to keep them clear of all that dust.
Also, you could introduce them to the wonder that is nasal snuff. I bring it out with me instead of something to smoke; because I never know if I will be able to smoke or not. Nasal snuff is discrete and if you do your research, is not nearly as terrible for you as any other kind of tobacco; and is certainly better for those around you.
Thank you guys for the wonderful advice. My house was previously owned by a smoker so I am not to worried about the discoloration until I repaint the walls and such. I think I probably am going to enact a no smoking inside policy or at least put them in the same room and close the vents off. I will pick up an ionizer as well.
Health and electronics issues aside, smoking can really fuck up a house. I spent most of the summer fixing a house whose previous tenant was a chain smoking old lady. She had only lived there maybe a year and a half.
- We tore out all the existing carpet
- Cleaned and completely reprimed and painted the entire inside of the house (ceilings included)
- Put in new fresh carpet
- Tried numerous air freshening solutions.
The house still has a slight old smoke odor to it. And this was a relatively new house, it was only built 10-12 years ago.
My house is old and already has to have most of those home improvements done. Near the end when I begin to do these things I am going to make the smoking here stop and fix the place up, then I hope to leave it to my girlfriend in good condition along with the hopefully non smoke damaged electronics.

This will help a lot.

Ionizers do a shitty job of purifying the air and are a waste of money. If you want an air purifier, get a HEPA air filter.
Seconded. Ionizers are a lame gimmick that do little to nothing. Pick up an active purifier with a HEPA filter.
I'd tell them to go outside and save yourself the trouble of cleaning up the smoke residue from everything.
Worth it.

Maybe the ionizers you guys have used... I'll see if I can dig up the name of the one my dad has. Works wonders.
