I have to say that CodePink's calender of upcoming events gave me a hearty laugh. Some excerpts - "meditation for peace", "yoga for peace", "make art not soldiers", "breastfeeding playgroup for peace" -no I did not make that one up-, and more middle-aged, liberal, female activities with a "for peace" tag on the end. I guess people who have little in their lives need to manufacture and zealously support a cause.

Shit, that's insightful. I mean, why else would anyone be for not-war? War is awesome.

Yeah, that pretty much works on both sides of the spectrum.
From begining to end this entire story, the rational of Berkly and the protesters is just human stupidity distilled down to its purest form. Lets go protest the marines, not somewhere that would make a difference mind you but at our local office which has absolutely no control over marine core policy. Oh while we are at it parking sucks so we are going to need a parking space. Oh and permits are hard so lets give them one for the next six months. Now that can go out, make some noise, and do absolutely nothing.
Idiots, im glad they are enjoying the freedom marines die for. You know i really dont care if the next marine to die for my freedom is gay or straight, ill honor him all the same.

They are honoring the freedom by practicing the right to protest. Writing an idiotic paragraph and then signing it with a I Marines statement doesn't work here, oh master of rhetoric.
I hate that Marines have to die to protect our freedom in other countries.

Kind of like how those with nothing in their lives sit on the sidelines and criticise others that do something with their time other than indulge themselves at the expense of those very people.
I live here (well, in Oakland), and honestly, the crazy shit that this city does no longer surprises anyone. The weird thing to me is that there was still a Marine recruiting station left on Shattuck.
Way to completely ignore my point. They have chosen a method that is COMPLETELY WORTHLESS in getting done what they want done. They are not getting the attention of policy makers. Its a bullshit feel good exercise that accomplishes bo diddly squat. Thats why i call them idiots. But hey, now they have a parking space. It reeks of soccer moms with to much time on their hands. Check their website if your so inclined, its kind of interested to hear how they want to help the situations of iraqi women while at the same time pulling all our troops out.
Well, I was a combat engineer, and we're really terrible people all around. No rapes, no orgies. But some way inappropriate physical contact, and some serious sexual harassment on so many terrible levels.

Eh, depressing recruitment by protesting beats just protesting.

This is somewhat off-topic, but I feel it's important to respond. In reference to what was spoilered, the idea that by fighting in another country the soldiers aren't protecting freedoms neglects the basic principle of warfare that if you are fighting in your own country - you've already lost most of the battle. Most military academies anymore advocate pre-emptive battles because they are shorter and take far fewer lives. Note - the Israeli raid on the Baghdad power plant back in '81 and Desert Storm. Nations that haven't abided by this often stuck in wars that could have been avoided by a show of force. The British in the Falklands (a victory) or the the French in Algiers (a loss).
Yeah, but the Marine Corps cares, which probably makes the freedom taste a little less sweet for those being discriminated against. Just something you ought to consider.
Also, while there might be other places to protest that would be more effective, this is an issue that has already been lobbied and protested on...it didn't work. Seems like disrupting recruiting efforts at the local level is as good a next step as any, really.
EDIT: Also, the whole "blah blah blah guys that died for your freedom" really doesn't carry much weight with most people. It certainly doesn't carry much with me, since I've nearly died for their freedom as well (well, I've nearly died due to hostile fire, which may or may not be the same thing) and I wholeheartedly agree with their cause. At least the equal rights for gays portion...the whole "lol war sucks" part perhaps a little less so, but I still wholeheartedly support their decision to go out and do their thing if it's what the believe.
The Marine Corps does not care if a soldier is gay or not. The US Code of Military Justice does. That Code is created by Congress. If you could find some evidence that the Marine Corps has the ability to change this but does not - then by all means throw it on the table and you'll alter my point of view. Also, by disrupting recruiting efforts, it in the end really only does hurt the soldiers. Not in the 'if you don't support the war, then you don't support the soldiers' way. I'm speaking about facts. Code Pink has been one of the biggest enemies of the Stop-Loss plan enacted to keep soldiers from retiring and that has been forcing soldiers into many more tours than they would otherwise. If you get rid of recruits, then the problem only gets worse.
Not that I think the Berkley office would be getting all that many recruits anyways, but the fact remains that a trend like this at a lot of offices could cause problems. And, again, I don't mind the protesting. In fact, I support their right to protest and petition. It is the harassing phone calls and the agenda of the City Council that bothers me.
Way to completely ignore my point. They have chosen a method that is COMPLETELY WORTHLESS in getting done what they want done. They are not getting the attention of policy makers. That's a fucking cop out. The UCMJ isn't jumping out of the page to dishonorably discharge loyal soldiers. Individual bigots are enacting a campaign of systematic bigotry which is made legal by the UCMJ.
I believe mcdermott is referring to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Yes, they do determine military policy, but this is one of the many cases where there is a distinction between whether this is actually a military policy or a public policy (a little of both I say). If one of the Joint Chiefs were to break ranks on gays in the military, then it would definitely be soon since we've got a lame duck in office. However, I still doubt that any of them would because it is similar to committing career suicide. Nothing like dedicating 50 years of your life only to throw it away by giving your opinion on something that wouldn't change a damn thing and that would also alienate many of the soldiers who follow you. A majority of the military (albeit slim majority) still doesn't want to see this law come about.
By the way, many, many retired high-ranking officers have come out against the policy. I definitely know that one former Chair of the Joint Chiefs and a retired Secretary of Defense (though he is a civilian) have come out against the policy.
That's a fucking cop out. The UCMJ isn't jumping out of the page to dishonorably discharge loyal soldiers. Individual bigots are enacting a campaign of systematic bigotry which is made legal by the UCMJ.
There may be cases of bigotry, in fact, I will say there definitely are. That does not dismiss the fact that by and large the code is simply applied as it is seen in the book. Those that are discharged due to policy have the rights to their day in court and, using the Marines as an example, a JAG lawyer.
The military takes their codes/laws/orders very seriously. Marines are railroaded out of the Corps for having asthma. Some of those soldiers can run faster, work harder, and do more than soldiers who don't have asthma - but it doesn't matter because standing orders say that it reduces combat effectiveness and a soldier can be discharged for it. This point is tangential, but its an example of something more universal that soldiers are discharged for just as harshly.
And, again, this code is determined not by the military but by Congress. They voted on it a long time ago. There is actually a bill in the House of Representatives right now (I think it is still in committee) that would replace this and allow service by homosexuals. Whether it survives or not depends on the make-up of Congress and whether enough people in Congress care.
Personally, I don't see this policy lasting more than 10 more years - barring any startling data from the Brits with gay soldiers in combat.
This is soooo not what the article is about, by the way. I'm not upset that they picket. Its the way the City Council is going about getting involved in the situation that bothers me.
On the whole gays in the shower "problem", I would just like to say that I work out at a gym twice a week for around 9 years. The gym has communal shower and its likely that in that time I must have showered with a gay man at some point.
Despite this I have yet to see any form for gay sex or even been propsitioned myself. (Why, why, why, haven't they asked me? I work out, I know some showtunes, but I yet to be asked to join in on wild butsexs in the shower!:P)
Also, whats the fucking deal with gays in the millitary anyways? The British Army allows gays to serve openly and they seem to have no problems with them. there are probably openly gay soldiers serving in Iraq/Afghanistan as we speak.
America should fucking get over itself about teh gayz.

Actually i was going to suggest writing their congresspersons... congresspeople...err congressmen and women? What the hell is the correct term here. As opposed to making some poor recruiters job more difficult when he really doesnt have a choice to be there.
Perhaps calling their congresshooligans, and their senators and raise awareness of the issue at the level where something can be accomplished. One could argue that protesting outside the building does that, but realistically your better off going door to door and working with people individually. Or setting up a booth at events where people can get information. Protesting outside the recruitment center is just... screwy. Its not hight profile enough to do more than look like a mob of idiots vs a couple poor military guys just trying to meet a quota.
The military can be quite good for some people, help them get their lives in order. Others it can seriously mess with their heads. With the current war i would say we are doing more head messing than good, but thats another topic.

I think the idea (at least partially) is that the military and government desperately care about recruitment. If you disrupt recruitment, they're more likely to capitulate than if you sent them a strongly worded letter.
I wonder if Berkeley is going to get bitch-slapped by the federal government for this, like the universities which tried kicking recruiters off campus. Are there many federal funds or projects going through the city?

Yeah, their method is completely worthless... except it got the city of Berkley to ask the marine recruiting office to vacate their city, and informed them that their presence was not wanted and unwelcome.
Completely worthless... right. Tell me one thing you've accomplished that is half as impressive as that.

They'll probably end up just moving somewhere else. I think they only moved there because it was cheaper than the last place, not because it's good recruiting grounds.

Uhhh, shutting down a small office isn't a particularly hard task for a city council.
Especially with popular support.
I'm just saying.
As for the topic at hand, as others have said I doubt the policy will last more than another 10 years. I hope it's shifted with the next president (if a democrat is elected and they have control of Congress, it may very well be). It's a first step towards getting over the tremendous homophobia in this country.
This protest, while a fine show of disdain for a policy of prejudice, seems a bit misplaced. In general, the tactics are polarizing and discourage the type of nationwide discourse needed on the issue. Something more civil, like the protests under King during the civil rights movement, would probably be far more effective.
Naw, Berkley has such a tremendous history of protest they've got to make some of them crazy or people will loose interest. Seeing as how left-wing the city is known for being it was just a stupid move for the U.S.M.C. to open shop there.
If people are already allowed to do yoga around the building while picketing I'm not sure what the need of an endorsed parking spot is for other than the local gov't to support the protest. The noise permission I'm O.K. with as it allows a marginal increase in one party's freedom of speech. Just because the U.S.M.C. didn't ask for that permit also doesn't mean they wouldn't recieve it.
Undoubtably this will be used in the next local elections and the one guy who voted against the policy will get slammed.

Wrong. DADT requires the discharge of any soldier who demonstrates homosexual behavior or intentions. The fact that you want to attribute the results to bigots in the Marine Corps rather than the body responsible for the UCMJ is a reflection of your stereotypes. There are bigots in the Marine Corps as there are bigots everywhere, but you are essentially blaming the USMC for abiding by standing law. That's retarded.

Do other protest groups get their permit fees waived or just Code Pink? Is it just one group that supports a certain political position getting subsidized by taxpayer money?
I'm also shocked that Berkley is just sitting there and letting the protestors smoke in doorways. So it's not okay to commit "mass murder" with guns and tanks but it is okay to kill everyone with secondhand smoke?
I forgot about the permit part, and yeah they should have to pay if other people have to as well. I'm just O.K. with the allowance for occaisional loud noises provided the USMC is allowed to obtain said permit as well. I doubt they would which makes it alright for me to support loud noises!

Question - and I'm not agreeing with Adrien here - does the DADT code, as set out on paper, require dishonorable discharge?

Question - and I'm not agreeing with Adrien here - does the DADT code, as set out on paper, require dishonorable discharge?
