I'm just trying to stop misinformation here, nothing more
And for the record, core shadows can be and frequently are pitch black. If it looks like parts of your figures have vanished into thin air then the problem lies in the drawing or the lighting model, not the color you used.
Well to be fair I think the discussion originally arose due to my habit of using pure black for dense shadows and thus making everyone look like I'd punched holes clean through parts of their anatomy...
I bet the statement "don't use pure black if you're only just learning to draw because what the hell do you think you're doing oh god my eyes" would've been less controversial Ori

ps. go look at some masters and how they shaded - van gogh, maybe reubens? shaded with massively weird colours - but it still works illusionistically
are you still at uni, ed? go talk to your IT guy and see if you can get a FADIS account through UToronto. best art archive site ever.
Well, they usually have some blue in them, don't they?
What do you mean by "usually"? Shadows aren't magically blue for some reason.
Outdoor scenes or those lit by natural light frequently have blue shadows because the sky itself acts as an omnidirectional light source. The light from the sun can be blocked, but the light from the sky comes in from every direction and is no longer overpowered by the sun, making shaded objects faintly blue, or possibly purple depending on the time of day.
Alternatively, in other situations where the artist is taking some creative liberty and exploiting color theory to his advantage, shadows can be made blue for no reason other than to provide a cool temperature contrast to the normally warm colors given off by light sources.
Yeah, I was an idiot and typed what I was thinking (a specific example) instead of what I meant to say.
I meant to point out that it's rare for a light source not to have any hue at all and so give no kind of hue to the shadows, and the reflected light. It's too common for people to assume that shadows are naturally always grey, or a midpoint between the surface colour and black.
A lot of artificial light sources, like halogen lights, for example, look pure white at first inspection, but there's usually a little yellow or blue in there. The mind often adjusts and reads all the light as white when it's the only light source and it's close enough to pure.
hi guys i'm doing an image for the udon street fighter tribute contest and i could use some help with proportions... this is just the early sketch stage that i'm going to paint over and i will redo the face and probably most of the other parts too as it goes on but right now i'm wondering how the proportions of the head and body are looking because to me the head looks a little bit too small
anyway enough babbling, here's the image:
ps. thanks to deelock for commenting on my last image i'll definitely take those things into account
im guessing at least half the entries will be badly drawn ryus

i'm thinkin of going for sagat or dhalsim right now or mabye even guile.. he looks fun to draw
@flundra: your picture's really cool and i like the cartoony look to it
@deelock: the colours are really good but the dots look a little too out of place
Nice. I love apple studies!
the red looks very saturated. maybe a highlight on the stem?
in conceptart i think they have a whole thread devoted to apples and digitally painting them. we should do one here.
Zergling, the outline on the apple is really killing it. And the strokes in the shadow are really distracting. A good trick for cast shadows is to lassow tool the shape and use a big brush, then blur the far ends a bit.
oc droodle and the ref off to the side there 'cause whatever
i don't know if i'm going to finish this or not so i thought i'd post it
i feel a bit like a kid colouring in a colouring book, with those kinds of lines

It's a bit plain, the negative space on the left sticks out especially. Try using various colors to highlight certain areas of the text. The basic black/grey contrast alone just doesn't do enough to catch the eye. You may also want to color the silouette to create more visual flair. Here's a little paintover/example:
Of course, you may be constrained by grayscale printing, in which case, you've done the best you can methinks (maybe vary up the text just a little more).
hey everyone
i'm trying out a new style of digital art (for me anyway) and i'm really liking how it's going so far, it's more painted and less lineart-heavy. here's a preview of something i'm working on:
anyone who guesses what it is wins...

There has to be a reason for a shadow to be blue.

I'm still a color noob so i'll work on some more studies.
Thanks
PS: I'd be down to have a thread like that...i'd even start it if a mod ok'd it.

Our first game is now available for free on Google Play: Frontier: Isle of the Seven Gods
That looks really good though...i wish i could have been allowed to use color...
Not too sure if it would fit that exact subject, though.
