The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I got bored and modeled this little guy in SolidEdge. I figured I'd rapid prototype it at school for some cute little gifts to friends.
Here's a quick render... don't ask about the lack of textures - this is a solid part drafted with my engineering software (to be machined, cast, etc). I'd like to get into more serious 3D work, but I'm so comfortable with 3D drafting that most art programs seems nearly unusable.
My question is, could I sell little plastic Companion Cubes? I've seen homemade videogame products on sale, so I figure it's alright. I didn't rip this from any in-game model.
Also, crits plz ;-) I noticed that the gaps between the edge pieces have got some pretty sharp corners.
I don't know anything about this kind of art, but I DO know that the heart is supposed to be pink, not red.
I was trying to find pink in the "part painter" but the closest I could get was to set the material to "red-hot steel".
Don't touch the hearts if you don't want to get burned, I guess. :!!:
The lack of surface treatment and texturing options are what really make me want to pick up another 3D suite. Is there any recommendations for 3D programs that are math-y but not overly code-y?
Also, Capn, I suppose you're right about the likeness rights... it's too bad the current official WCC merch is pretty lackluster (the plushes). I could easily die-cast these things, which is really what Valve should do.

Maya. And yeah the valve plushies are terrible. I really want a nice solid weighty companion cube to carry around with me everywhere i go.
I'm pretty sure the likeness of the Companion Cube is copyrighted. You can make it for fun, but you can't sell it.
Yes, it is. You'll get into serious legal troubles if you do this. Like Mango said, you can make it for fun, but that's about it.
People are selling and giving away little homemade Cubeys all over the place on the Cube's "official" myspace. Not saying that's okay, more like... those people need to be careful where they tread, surely they don't want to get in trouble with Valve.
And yes, all that aside, short of the red/pink issue, it looks good to a regular ol' joe like me who only does 2D stuff. I think it's a little pointy, but I don't know if that was intended or if its something you'd wanna fix.

You can, if you believe.

Try out modo. With all the modeling program's I've used, its absolutely the easiest to get used to(and powerful, they made WiC with it for example)
