Console Choices

Hey PA, I recently saved up around $700 and after a year or so of waiting, I have decided to get a next-gen console. But I'm not really sure which one I should get. I'm really dying to play SSBB but I'm not sure if the rest of the games on the Wii are worth it to buy so I'm leaning towards the Xbox360 because of its extensive game library. But then again, PS3 is picking up steam as a console, so overall, I'm just really not sure what I should get. You guys have any recommendations for me? Thanks guys!

Market research? Or legit gamer looking for advice?

    Interesting.

What kind of games do you like?

Any series in particular (other than Smash Brothers)?

Do you have a stiffy for multiplayer?

These are the things we must know before we can spend almost a thousand dollars of your own money for you.

    Look at the games available.
    Decide.

You often shouldn't buy something based on potential. However, in some places, the Wii is still hard to find.

I'm looking for honest gamer advice. I have no console advice (other then owning a DS) as I have always done my gaming on my PC and I'm looking for a change in gaming.

There isn't a particular series I prefer but I do like playing RPGs, racing games and fighting games (i was a big SF fan in the arcades). The reason why I have doubts about the Xbox360 is because of the RRoD. I keep on hearing blogs and forum posters talk about it. I know what it is but I'm just curious how bad is it and how often does it happen? Does it happen to EVERY single Xbox360 eventually or is it getting better with 'newer and improved' models.

As for multiplayer, I always liked multiplayer games but if the game is good enough, then I suppose it is not a big factor. How does the Wii friends code compare to the Xbox live system?

If you've been a primarily PC gamer, and you like RPGs, and you're looking for a change in gaming, I'd probably reccomend you check out the PS3 (a BC model, of course).

Not only would you have the console gameplay you're looking to try out, but you also have the practially epic software library of the PS2 to keep you occupied. It's RPG heaven, and if you haven't owned a console yet then there are a ton of really awesome games available that you can experience.

The main problem is getting ahold of a backward-compatible PS2 at a decent price, while still allowing yourself enough leftover money for games.

From what I hear, the RRoD problem is not as bad with the newer models, not to mention the 3-year warranty that only applies to the RRoD.

As for friend codes vs XBL, I've heard that nothing can really compare to XBL when it comes to multiplayer functionality. I'm not biased - i have a Wii and no 360, but everywhere I go I just hear over and over how polished XBL is.

Get a PS3 if the PS2 lineup looks good to you. If you're going for a current gen lineup, get an Xbox 360. The whole RRoD thing isn't that big of a deal. I havn't had one yet, and if you do, you're only out a bit of time.
The Wii is also rad awesome. It doesn't have a lot of good games, but if you only get the best, their is still quite a few. Also, it has Super Mario Galaxy.

I think the better question is: Can you hold out for a couple of months?

The rumors flying around concerning a new model PS3 or a potential price drop would probably play out over the next couple of months, and if the PS3 has a price drop, you can expect the Xbox 360 lineup to drop in price as well. This way, if you planned on buying one of those, you may save a few bucks.

The Wii will be $249 until supply meets demand, which at this pace will be sometime in 2023 or thereabouts, so if you wanted a Wii I'd buy one as soon as you can actually find one.

LOL opionions. There is a shit ton of awesome coming on all the systems and really no one can decide for you what you are going to like better.

I really wouldn't sweat the RRoD thing. The hardware revisions have for the most part taken care of the problems and worst case you have a 3 year warranty. I have a top of the line PC, PS3 and the 360 and the truth is I spend the vast majority of my time on the 360. Plus as of right now it is the only place you can get Rez HD.

I'm not going to touch the quality issue with a 10 foot pole, but there is a kernel of truth in the part where 360 will have by far the most overlap with PC games, with a fair number of the major titles getting cross-ported in a few years like for the xbox. I'd say that if you're patient and have a decent PC, you should ignore the bitter ex-PC 360 fans and go for a console that offers a completely different type of gameplay, namely the wii

    Interesting.

Post doesn't sit right for a legit gamer. I vote shill. The strokes with which it was written were too broad.

If you are not a shill then just make a list of which games you would like to play (saying using metacritic, gamerankings or your favourite site) for each console and then buy the one which has the biggest list. To put your console choice into a forum seems unsound.

Put it this way, do you repeatedly like sending your console back for repairs, if so, buy a 360 and a Wii.

So when your 360 is being fixed for the RRoD you can play the Wii.

The Wii is my favorite console of this generation simply because of the awesome library available to it.

On what other console could I play Super Mario Galaxy, The Wind Waker, Super Mario 64, Super Metroid, AND Super Mario Bros. 3?

I got hold of a Wii (although it's only partial ownership) and I'm enjoying it. Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess are all great games that I'm enjoying and I hear No More Heroes is worth picking up. Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition I hear is also great provided you didn't play the other versions.

The Xbox 360 has some really great games and you don't repeatedly send it back for repair. Microsoft has been replacing broken 360s with more reliable 360s free of charge and the more reliable 360s are also available through purchase.

So you might not have to use the warranty at all.

My advice overall is to try to pick up both a Wii and 360 but you might want to wait until the price of games drops. The only two things that are holding me back from buying a 360 are prices and the fact that I would like to buy my own Wii instead of sharing custody.

It doesn't happen to every 360, but not many launch units are still alive. I've heard it quoted between 30% and 50%.

The newer models (Lot numbers later than 740-something, I think - mine's 732, and is the old model, and is my second after a RRoD) are supposedly more reliable, but we'll see a year from now just how much more reliable. It's a serious issue, but Microsoft will fall over itself to replace a system - the damage to mine was specifically not covered by warranty, but they still replaced it.

With any major purchase, be prepared to invoke the warranty. That goes for consoles as much as cars, lawnmowers, or vacuum cleaners.

This sort of thing is dependent entirely on what kinds of games you like. Because each system is extremely viable on its own, but is completely dependent upon personal tastes.

Also, it depends on what first/second party software appeals to you as well, as these will provide a clear expectation of what each system will likely have exclusively.

When trying to decide which console to get, there's one very important question you should answer. This question is so important that its answer should point you in the direction of the console you need to get.

What platform is Mass Effect on?

$700? Wii60 man. The Wii is the front-runner console right now, and in another six months or so, you're going to see an explosion of third party games. 360 for traditional gaming. Yeah, the PS3 has a lot of the same multi-platform games, but the 360 (IMO) has the better exclusives.

If you have $700, you HAVE to get both a Wii and a 360. The Wii has some of the best games I've ever played (Super Mario Galaxy!) and is great for parties/girlfriends/family/pets. The 360 has an incredibly solid lineup (Rockband + DLC, Mass Effect) great online support with Live and all the next gen.

If a media center is more your style, you can sacrifice the excellent Live stuff and some of the exclusives for a PS3, and you get a BluRay player plus the Sony exclusives. It's all preference. But yeah, with $700, get a Wii in addition to any other console. It's the front runner in the race right now and has a ton of must-haves that won't ever show up on any other systems.

This question comes up a lot and I never really understood it. Do consoles, as an individual entity, have appeal all by themselves? If you never purchased any games would you be content owning a 360/Wii/PS3?

That's kind of a strange question..

But again, it depends on what you're looking for.

Some people have bought PS3's to essentially use as a standalone BluRay player. So, it kind of works as a DVD/Bluray player if you buy no games.

The 360 will play DVDs.. and it has an HD DVD addon..

Both of these things have networking and multimedia capabilities beyond that. I think the 360 works as some kind of media extender thing or something.

The Wii is more centrally focused as a gaming machine. So you really wouldn't be buying one unless you wanted to play games on it. That said, the thing comes with a game, so even if you don't buy anything extra, you still get Wii Sports. But it does have stuff like the Weather Channel, News Channel, and Photo Channel. So I guess there's that, but it's not much. You'd really be buying a Wii to play games.

So if HD Movies are important to you, you might benefit from a PS3 even if you bought no games. The 360 less so, I would assume, and the Wii less than that.

But if you're like me, games are the prominent reason, and honestly, I could care less about media and movie functionality. If I bought a PS3 I'd probably never buy a single bluray disc. Or a 360, I'd never buy an HD DVD addon or use its media extension stuff. Or a Wii, I'd never buy a theoretical DVD Channel thing. Although I have used the weather thing a couple of times but rarely.

Oh, also, each system (except maybe the 360) have internet browsing capabilities. I have used the Wii's browser on many occasions. So there's that. But if you ask me, none of these features are worth the price of consoles by themselves; unless you really love BluRay movies.

Of course the consoles have other functions, but their primary purpose is to play games. If you don't want to use them for games, then you are better of buying equipment specifically designed for that other purpose.

Additionally, this is a question that can't be answered by anyone here. All we can do is point out features X, Y, and Z of each console and also the games library of each one. The person has to weigh the options and see if it is right for them. Since all of this information is readily available on the internet I don't see why people post here asking what console they should buy. It would be quicker and easier to just google up the feature/games list of each console.

If people want to discuss why people chose different consoles, to satisfy their curiousity/see what other people like, then that is a different thread entirely. However, that's what these threads usually become anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter.

    Wait you haven't ever had a PS2?

Go with that then. Hundreds of fantastic games, most of which can be found for ten bucks or less. If you want a system that can play next-gen games as well, then go for a BC PS3. Or, get a PS2 and a Wii for the price of a PS3 if you like the look of Wii exclusives. Access to a PS2 means you're going to be up to your eyeballs in games, so the "lack of good games" on the Wii would probably go entirely unnoticed by you.

You know, it's funny. Until the latter half of last gen, I've gone with Nintendo only since the N64. Even once I got a PS2, I owned maybe 5 games for it? Now that I have a 360, I don't have enough time to play through new games because there's so many more. To me, it's less that Nintendo consoles have an unacceptably slow trickle of games, but rather that the 360 has an unmanageable overflow of them. Not that I'm complaining.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean.

There's no way a random person can create and thread and say, "What console is the best? Which one should I buy?"

Because the answer is entirely dependent upon what that person's tastes, expectations, and budgets are.

What makes OPs that ask that question go from useless to useful is when they actually say what kinds of games they like, what their favorite developers/franchises are, what they're looking for in a new console, what their expectations and priorities are, what their budget is, what kind of features they want, etc.

It's pointless to ask "What's the best?" by itself.

    Indeed.

Only the person buying can choose for themselves. This or any other forum can only lay out the benefits of each one.
