Yes that's right I've never even tried it. I'm debating heavily on weather to get it for my Wii. I'm sure I'll end up getting it as soon as I get my Wii back from Nintendo (they're fixing it, and for free!). I feel so alone and weird, is there anyone here in a similar boat?
The Wii version is just fine. Yeah, it has PS2 graphics, but graphics are unimportant in a rhythm game, especially when the important display (The notes, fretboard, the hud) is all actually very good.
Plus, the Wii version has online multiplayer, and the cool little feature of being able to hear the missed note sounds from the wii remote plugged into the guitar. Also the guitar vibrates to the music when you have SP activated.
If you don't have a 360/PS3, the Wii version is great. It just lacks DLC at the moment, although apparently Activision has worked something out with Nintendo to provide it in the nearish future. Supposedly the Wii version's online functionality is slightly better than the PS3's.
Also I am uncertain if the copies currently on shelves have fixed the stereo/surround issue. I think they have but am uncertain.
The Wii version is the exact build as the PS2 one, it's pretty nasty.
Is the Wii you're only system?
Hell, I'd opt for the PC one if your rig is nice.
The graphics aren't great but the guitar is a lot nicer, wireless, and there's DLC in the pipes, unlike for the PC version. Wii over PC.
Yeah, but if he gets it for the PC he can use it with frets on fire.
Which means he has thousands of songs at his disposal.
This is the reason I went with the 360 version of rockband over the PS3 version, actually - so I could use the USB guitar with my PC for frets on fire.

You can play Frets on Fire with most GH guitars - the PS2 SGs and Les Pauls and that other one (PS2 usb adaptor), the Wii Les Pauls (BT drivers), the 360 Xplorers (USB), and maybe but I'm not sure about the PS3 les pauls.
You don't need the PC version of GH3 to use the guitar for Frets on Fire.
Also, Frets on Fire is .. uh... not that great. It's a half decent temporary substitute, but man, it's not nearly as much fun as Guitar Hero. Not only are most of the note charts horrible, but most of the audio tracks don't allow the game to cut off the guitar in the song when you're not playing (some of them do but on rare occasion). The HOPO system is 'okay' but not nearly as functional as GH2 or GH3 especially in fast portions. There's no local multiplayer. There's no online multiplayer. No leaderboards. There's not even Whammy Bar funcitonality, nor is there any Star Power mechanic. There is no nicely tuned difficulty curve from lower sets to harder sets. It's a mish mash of songs that you have to go through the trouble of getting yourself and hoping that the user-made notechart isn't crappy and unfun. A lot of user note charts don't even include all of the various difficulty settings either; so you're SOL if you're a "medium" or "hard" player, or sometimes an "expert" player, because a lot of user charts don't include all of these settings. Even then, there's not much of a variety of difficulty. Users songs largely range from very very easy to medium in difficulty, even when put on "Amazing" aka Expert difficulty - of the 40 songs I've put on my FOF, I four to five-starred at least 90 percent of them on the first try on the Amazing setting, effortlessly. Most user charts lack the kind of stuff you find in the latter tiers of any of the 3 primary GH games (i'm excepting Rocks 80s because that game kinda blows).
It's a decent imitation but Frets on Fire is definitely no substitute for Guitar Hero.
Also, it's more fun to play GH on a TV in a living room with friends than it is to play it yourself on your PC. Or even for GH3 PC, I imagine most people have more comfy living rooms than where they keep their computers, which would be more conducive to playing with friends than where one keeps his PC.
Also.. when you say 'thousands of songs at his disposal,' that's not really true. There may be a couple hundred user made FoF charts out there, but by and large, most of them are complete crap. Any songs that an FOF user may want, he can potentially make himself - but as someone who has done this, it's a far more difficult and time consuming task than it seems. Even if you find a song you like and a notechart for it already made, cross your fingers that it's at least decent, because chances are it won't be. Making them yourself is a true pain, too.
I agree with everything slash said about FoF. It's a pale imitation at best. I found it fun as a gimmick but any attempt at serious play seriously sucked.
Well... ahem... without getting into too grey of an area, as a rockband owner, I've found Frets on Fire to be a more than adequate substitute for all 4 guitar hero games.
FoF was fun for a while, but the load times for the songs is just ridiculous. I would say get the Wii version as I have the PC version and the lack of any support/DLC etc is a pain in the ass. However if you want new tracks scorehero.com has some in-depth threads about how to add custom songs FoF style, but using the far superior GH3 engine.
The PC version has pretty hefty system requirements though, as it's a totally crap port from the 360 version done by lazy developers who have never heard of optimization.
Wii-mote works on a pc providing you have a bluetooth device, wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if with very little effort they could get the guitar up and running with FoF.
Incidentally I own GH1,GH2,GH80s and GH3 on the PS2 and now GH2 and GH3 on the 360 and I'm still appalling at them. I made up (being modded, and again a very grey area) a -custom- disc for the 360 with all the main songs from Guitar Hero 1 and Guitar Hero 80s imported on to Guitar Hero 2. It's fun to play through all the earlier tracks again with the better HO/PO system, works a treat too. It was a bit of a project I fancied trying, exporting all the tracks and stuff from my PS2 originals.
