Okay so I got Pidgin as my IM client because Miranda is apparently obsolete now. However nobody on the internet seems to like skinning it. I've found a few themes, but then everyone starts talking about how these are GDK themes and not individual application themes or whatever, and I have no idea how to apply them. I just want to make it beautiful like all my friends' Adium is. Is there no hope?
Yeah, people still use it. When I Boot-Camped XP, I was on the search for a good, pretty, functional client, and my friend recommended Miranda.
Personally, I found it unsightly and difficult to use. Getting GoogleTalk to actually work was like jumping through hoops. Tabs aren't integrated, and to get them to work requires knowing exactly what you need. Coming from Adium on OSX, Miranda was a trainwreck.
If you're looking for a good multiplatform client, try out Trillian. I've found it works really well, though GTalk is Pro-only.

Miranda was very good several years ago, but it's definitely been out-paced by much better programs for at least a few years. I'd take hoodie's recommendation and use something like Trillian instead.
Trillian, I found, sometimes had an issue with logging into some of my other messengers after using it for awhile. I'm waiting till Trillian Astra comes out though, it looks pretty nice.

I just got Trillian and then very quickly un-got it because it was pretty ugly looking and none of the skins looked appealing. Still working on skinning Pidgin. While I'm at it, is there any way to skin Windows Vista without going absolutely insane?
Post extravagant details of your results. I too am stuck with Trillian (what I'd really love is a Windows IM client that'll do webcams and all that jazz and ISN'T Live Messenger - dreaming of Kopete here).
(breathes a sigh of relief that the topic wasn't a misspelling of "Pigeon")
I was actually kind of disappointed. I know how to skin rabbits, but there are some pretty fat wood pigeons in my back garden just now and, welp, that'd save some money on the shopping budget.
I don't know if I could eat a pigeon personally... but aye, it'd save some cash. I think at that point, I'd stick to bulk purchased white rice and black beans. But I digress from the topic.

No GTalk, though, but good for everything else.

Yes, it does have gtalk.
EDIT: New OP
Astra is golden.
