Xbox 360 Disk read errors

So it's that time of the day again for another: "My 360 is shitting the bed, what can I do?" topic.

I'm getting a DRE every so often after playing for a while. This results in the game crashing me back to the dashboard. I bought my 360 from a Canadian EB Games back in September or so with no warranties. I've heard this happening to other people and they seemed to have some luck immediately returning it for a better 360 version.

What are my options?

Bonus question: Should I be more wary about using my Xbox? I've heard some pretty horrible disk scratching stories.

I get this periodically with my Fifa 08 game and only that game.

are you just getting it with the one game, or multiple games?

I've only had ti so far with my copy of Assassin's Creed. The disk is immaculate, so I dunno...

I had this exact same issue, and I found a workaround that worked for me.
    1. Turn your 360 on.
    2. Open the disc tray.
    3. Close the disc tray.
    4. ...
    5. Profit!

If I didn't open the tray and close it (with the game inside of course) the game would DRE on me and I'd lose everything. But when I did it this way, it worked like a charm.

The only thing is I've read that this symptom eventually leads to the 360 scratching the shit out of the game disk. I can play just fine after the crash, I'm just wondering if I should do anything about the error.
