[VLttP] Sixth Generation - Gamecube

maximumzeromaximumzero I...wait, what?New Orleans, LARegistered User regular
edited February 2008 in Games and Technology
So in 2000 I bought a Dreamcast, enjoyed it, and purchased games for it long after it's death, into 2004 I believe. However, I did not purchase any other console of the Sixth generation beyond the Dreamcast, though I did purchase a Game Boy Advance in '01.

So, I missed most of the sixth generations games. Last year I bought a Wii along with a wavebird and a standard GC controller. Thus, I now have access to the entire library of Gamecube games. I already own a few, including Wind Waker, Super Mario Sunshine, and RE4.

I come to you, good forum viewers, to suggest titles that I have missed. Keep in mind I didn't, don't, and won't be owning a PS2 or Xbox, so do suggest multiplatform titles where applicable.

Thank you for your time.

Both Pikmins. Play the first one first or else you won't be able to enjoy it, since 2 outclasses it.

I'd say Smash Bros., but the new one for the Wii comes out in like a month so just sit tight for that.

    Windwaker times one million.

I can't speak for it personally, but people seem to dig Chibi Robo. Also Fire Emblem.

Cubivore if you can find it.

Killer7 is kind of cool if you be patient with it.

Both Viewtiful Joes. Well, you can skip the second one.

Fire Emblem is pretty awesome, as is Killer7, though they're definitely not for everyone.

PSO and Skies of Arcadia if for some reason you didn't play them on the Dreamcast.

Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - More FPA (First Person Adventure) than FPS. Drop dead gorgeous in prog scan 480p
Eternal Darkness - One of the best survival horror Lovecraftian games ever
Pikmin 1 and 2 - 1st party Nintendo mean QUALITY
Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2 - Clover Studios sidescrolling 2.5D sentai beat-em-up nutso supaa fun
Skies of Arcadia Legends (if you don't already own the Dreamcast one) - Sky pirates are made of win
Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 - for the party games mostly, but single player is fun marble madness type maze navigation

Did I mention Eternal Darkness? :)

EDIT: First person != First party. Dur.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes - It feels short, but it's a great remake if slightly shittier voice acting doesn't bother you.

Zelda: Twilight Princess - Amazing. Just...just snag it up.

Metroid Prime - Another must-have, and there are a good few extras to be unlocked by hooking up with Metroid Fusion on the GBA. The second game was good the first time through, but I can't put myself through it again like I can with this one.

Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door - Quirky and odd, but an addictive RPG.

F-Zero GX, but only if you like being raped by difficulty.
Luigi's Mansion is fun if you can get it cheap, don't pay more than $10 though
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is an excellent RPG
Ikaruga for awesome shmup goodness, if you don't have it on the DC already. Frothing demand!
Mario Kart: Double Dash is good, but the Wii version will be out soon enough so you might want to wait for that.
Animal Crossing, if you want something slow and relaxing.

    some multiplatform games:
Burnout 2 - best arcade racer last gen
Hulk: Ultimate Destruction - you play as the Hulk running around a sandbox city. It's awesome.
SSX3 - arguably the best in the series, but definately better then SSX: On Tour

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within (not as good as the others and I'm not sure if you'll like it)
Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones (best one of the three)

I'd recommend Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess but I suggest getting the Wii version since, last time I checked, both versions cost the same.

The best Gamecube game is Resident Evil 4, but since you have a Wii, you can just go ahead and get the Wii version which includes the main game, the bonus stuff that was added in the PS2 version, and Wii controls. If you like old school survival horror games, you'll definitely want to pick up the Resident Evil remake and Resident Evil 0, neither of which should cost too much these days.

And definitely get Beyond Good & Evil.

Evenif you already have PSO on Dreamcast, the Gamecube version offers a lot of new stuff:
    • Prettier interface
    • Dual analog control lets you use the right stick for menus, including the shortcut menu
    • Enhanced magic and other visual FX
    • Shifta and Deband visual FX toned-down, now less seizure-inducing
    • Episode II with 4 areas, 4 new gorgeous stages, many new enemies, and new bosses.
    • Lots of new items and all-new rare item drop charts for every section ID
    • Unique appearances for all old equipment of 9* rarity and higher
    • 3 new and very welcome classes
    • Split-screen offline multiplayer for up to 4 players
    • 4 characters per memory card
    • An excellent total game rebalance addresses the moderate to severe problems of PSO v1 and v2
    • All Androids regenerate Hp when still, can lay traps in all difficulties, and are immune to poison/paralysis.
    • All Newmen regenerate Tp when still.
    • You can actually be a FOrce and feel quite powerful for the first time

    On the flip side...
    • Episode I has recieved a few really odd visual "downgrades" like non-animated, almost invisible sunbeams in Forest and all the "grating" floor surfaces in Cave 1 being changed.
    • Traps are a bit wonky and no longer pop out from the ground or spin around before exploding.
    • Some weapon types had their attack animations changed
    • Episode I stage lighting somehow feels "off", like every non-Dreamcast version.
    • Episode II REALLY likes Megid and other insta-death in Ultimate

I feel it's definitely worth it overall.

You can't play it online with Wii, when running in gamecube mode it doesn't have access to any Wii-specific hardware so the wireless adapter is off-limits.

I know some people do still play it online with a Gamecube, but I don't believe that can be discussed any further.

Props to everyone who's mentioned Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, arguably the most enjoyable 2-D platformer of all last generation. I don't know how difficult it is to find with some of the woefully neglected GC bongos, but it's well worth tracking down. And while you're at it, if you're looking for a fun party game grab the original Donkey Konga and as many other sets of bongos as you can find. Prior to Rock Band and GH, Donkey Konga was the poison of choice at every single party I ever hosted.

I'm also adding my votes to people who've said SSX3, Beyond Good & Evil, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Ikaruga and Tales of Symphonia. These are the only GC titles I have left from my last-gen purging. :) You're also definitely better off grabbing the Wii version of RE4, as detailed above by RainbowDespair.

Yep, and (unlike the PC version, for some strange reason) it had multiplayer as well. I loved that game so much. Cool atmosphere, great controls and just plain fun. It was IO interactive at their best, and it is a crying shame that a sequel never materialized.

I'd say that the exact opposite is true, actually. The first one has less replay value and is an overall shorter game, but the second one is padded with far too many interminable dungeons and lacks the first game's sense of involvement and immediacy. That said, both games are great, and the first one is easy to find for a decent price.

Actually, I completely agree. I only said that because most people tend to think that 2 is in every way superior. I hated being in dark gloomy caves for half the game, and they made things seem less like a real world and more like, well, a video game.

IMO the best way to do a Pikmin game would be to give you 30 days to accomplish a mission, and after that the real game started, and the difficulty of it would be dependent on how efficient you were during the 30-day interval. So you can keep playing long, long after day 30, but that need for efficiency and swiftness is still an important component.

Tales of Symphonia for some RPG goodness. The story may numb your brain, but the combat is awesome fun. Plus it has co-op. Never tried that part myself, but I only hear good things about it.

Freedom Fighters I second. Killing Soviets will never get old. Plus the multiplayer was fun. They really need a sequel with co-op, everything is better with co-op. I recommend watching Red Dawn either before, during, or after you play it. WOLVERINES!

SSX 3 I thought was awesome. Doesn't hurt that it looks excellent too.

On a side note I am surprised there isn't a Pikimin: Wii coming out. It almost seems like a perfect fit.

On a side note I am surprised there isn't a Pikimin: Wii coming out. It almost seems like a perfect fit.

I really hope there's one in the works. I think the Wiimote would make it much easier to control and direct squads of Pikmin.

I'd love a Pikmin DS even more, stylus control would be so awesome, but I don't think the DS could handle that many characters on screen at once.
