Okay, a friend's PC is jacked. If he launches any internet enabled programs, he gets about 14 pop ups and other malware that slows his XP pc down to an agonizing crawl. Since i'm "the pc guy", he's turned to me for help. Truth is, i'm too careful about what I download, and from where, so I never have to deal with this. What is the recommended spyware/malware removal setup for XP home? Free would be best, but cheap shareware would be consdiered. I turn to the interwebs for help, and Thanks! in advance.
I'm sometimes grumpy and random, feel free to overlook the strange man in the corner.

No-Script will keep a computer safe from most malicious shit on the internet, but the user has to be smart enough to know when to enable scripts. Penny Arcade forums? Ok. CNN.com? Ok. Myspace/porn? Asking to get fucked.
