Gamefly Queue Question?

So, the last three games sent to me by GameFly have been pretty low on my Queue and the ones above it have been (mostly except for Pikmin 2) high availability. What gives? Is this what I can expect from Gamefly? None of these games, by the way, are new, the newest being Mario Galaxy (passed over with Zak and Wiki and others fro the Simpsons game!)

The way it seems to work is that they prioritize speed of shipment over your game preference. "High availability" just means that they expect to get a copy back within the next day, so it's possible that they just didn't have the games at the top of your queue. (edit: In retrospect this is a foolish thing to say because they are not a small company and I'm sure they'd get at least a single copy of whatever game back every day. It's more that they "expect to get enough back to meet demand", I guess.)

It also seems likely to me that they'd process the whole day's shipments at once, and try to figure out how to maximize the number of games sent. So maybe they get a copy of Pikmin 2 back, and it's at the top of your queue, but it's also at the top of someone else's. If the other guy didn't have anything else in his queue, they'd probably send it to him and just send you something else.

Anyway, if you keep getting games you kind-of-but-don't-really want to play, just don't put them in your queue. This is what I do, and I can't say I've been disappointed with the service. (If your queue only has stuff you really want to play, then you'll be happy no matter what they send you.)

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I am looking forward to playing the Simpsons, I guess I just thought it would be after I played some of the other major games first. It seems to turn the logic of a queue on its head. I'll have to reevaluate my queue.

It's a priority queue, you just don't get to determine the priority.

"High Availability" does not mean "Available Now." Its the equivalent of Netflix's "Short Wait." On the day that you are to be shipped another game, they look at your number one choice only. If its available, they send it out. If its not, they wait one business day to see if it comes in. If its still not there the next day, they will send you the highest game on your list that is currently available.

If you're looking and your Queue, and the only title that says "Available Now" is number 28, then expect to get number 28 next.

If you absolutely positively have to play a specific game, my advice is to take all the games off your Queue except that one. It will take longer to get a game, but it will definitely be the one you want.

Yeah, it's better for Gamefly if you keep your queue full, but it's better for you if you keep it nearly empty. In fact, if there's a game coming out that you really want to play right away, you can just remove everything else from your queue and return a game right before the release date. They'll have to send the new game to you...it never fails.

I've read that Gamefly changed the way their queuing works sometime back. This was in between my membership at old address and when I resubscribed after moving.

It used to wait a day or so to see if the highest items in your queue would become available, assuming availability wasn't too low. Now it appears to start from the top, work its way down, and send the very first thing currently in-stock at the exact time of your "turn".

I'm pretty sure "availability" is not a measure of their stock on-hand, but copies expected back soon (from post-office scans of stuff headed back to them). Also be aware that regardless of your own queue, there must also be an unseen queue of people waiting on each title. In this queue, you may not be the first in line for a copy, you could be the 2nd, or the 5th, or the 138th.

That said, I've not had your situation occur during any of my membership, and I keep queue of at least 20 or so titles. At worst I got the 2nd or 3rd title as it was "available now" and the others weren't (and were popular games).

I'm pretty sure they still wait a day. My last return was received on Saturday. Normally, if my first choice is available, its shipped out the same day, but my #1 choice wasn't available, so my 2nd choice was shipped today.

I've since canceled because overseas shipping takes too long, but when I was a subscriber this was exactly what I did. I may have played fewer games this way, but I always got the one that I wanted next.

I'm glad to hear my experience is a bit outside the norm, and the tips for queue construction are going to help a lot. I think Simpsons will be here 2 days at the most (and hopefully my wife will have me send back My Horse and Me eating my other rental spot!)

Keep only the one game you want in your queue. Really. Works like a charm.

I've been considering this service. The thing is, I just got a PS3 and it's my only gaming system. While I think it'd be cool to get games like uncharted pr R&C without having to pay the whole 60 bucks, I still want to own games like COD4 and Madden '09 (when it comes out) because of the long-term play associated with multiplay.

I'm sending assasin's creed to my cousin so he can try it out but once I get it back I can sell it for 40ish bucks. From what I understand that's a higher priced game. If I buy 1 used game a month and they're cheaper on the majority I'll only see a $10 loss at max problably.

At least this is what I think it looks like now. Can anyone vouce for GF? I think it might be easier, but cost me more since there are certain games that I will want to own long term.

Gamefly was great while I had it, but I realized that I'm too much of a collector for that kind of service. I like to buy a lot of games and then play them much much later
    or never *blush*
