This past week has been awesome. I felt the need to post about it because I rarely get the chance to so thoroughly indulge in my hobbies. Let's just say I got back into comics with a vengeance!

Before going on this comics binge my collection consisted of about 50 comics from the early 90's about half of which were a half complete and spotty collection from Spawn #1-30 and the four issue Deadpool miniseries from back then.
I had also picked up Deadpool's new ongoing series last year and the Dark Tower series, as well as getting started on reading Sandman and 30 Days of Night.

    backstory spoilered to avoid TLDR:
Usually, I am limited by either time, finances, or other obligations. This was a rare moment and I thought some of you might enjoy.

I followed comics in my early teens, mostly in the forms of collecting marvel comic cards. I was into X-Men just like everyone else, but then got pulled in by the new title Spawn. I collected cards, a few comics here and there but didn't have the money to really get entrenched in collecting and it dropped off. It was relegated to a corner of my mind and I knew one day I would hop back on the comic train. I got back into things last year once Stephen King's Dark Tower series was brought into comic form and have been getting the itch. I then picked up Sandman which had always intrigued me and 30 Days of Night because the art rocked. This last week I arrived at a comic book shop with a full head of steam and haven't looked back since.

TLDR: I went to the comic book shop and scored a crit on the TPB section.

    1. Since Spawn is where my passion for comics first got started I got the New Flesh and Neo Noir TPB.
I also picked up back issues 176-180, 189, and 194 (I cleared them out of back issues post #175.)
    2. 100 Bullets looks awesome so I thought I'd check that out and got the first TPB but haven't ready it yet.
    3. Sandman Volumes 6 and 7 (These are amazing, just like everyone said)
    4. 30 Days of Night Volumes 8 and 9 (I still like the art but these are getting the slightest bit stale for me)
    5. The Darkness two latest TPB's and then issues 76-current #80 (pretty slick series, I'll continue to read it)
    6. Witchblade I picked up a trade to see if I like the series and I may have to pick it up
    7. Preacher I picked up the first volume on recommendation of the store owner, haven't read it yet.
    8. Deadpool #16 and the Marvel Spotlight issue (hilarious humor as only Deadpool can provide)
    9. The Dark Tower latest issue (I've got them all and love every second of them)
    10. Thor Man of War One Shot and Thor issues 600-603 (haven't read yet)
    11. Proof the first volume and the latest issue (haven't read these yet)
    12. Chew 1-4 (this looks to be an amazing new series, can't wait for the next one)
    13. Unwritten 1-5 (Another winner, even my wife likes this one)
    14. Haunt #1 interesting story I'll look forward to seeing where it goes
    15. A complimentary issue of Transmetropolitan to get me interested, and I liked it quite a bit

It was a little surreal walking out of that shop with so many stories to adventure through. It's been an amazing week reading through everything and I can't wait to continue. I'm still interested in checking out Invincible, the Walking Dead and Northlanders, but I've bitten off quite a bit to chew on for the moment.

If I was interested in getting into Amazing Spider-Man where would I start?

Let's say I've read the classic Ditko/Lee issues, I've read Kraven's Last Hunt, I've read Ultimate Spider-Man, Marvel Adventures Spider-Man/Avengers, and I still have a hankering for more. AND I read the JMS stuff.

I don't care about One More Day, I want Brand New Day.

There are a few trades out:

    BND 1, 2, 3
    New Ways to Die
    Kraven's First Hunt
    Crime and Punisher
    Death and Dating

Are these worth it? Are they at least moderately consistent? Everywhere I've asked in the past has given me guff about Quesada. I thought to ask here because I'm new to the board.

I would first ask if you if you have read everything from Ultimate Spider-Man to date, and the same with Marvel Adventures Spider-Man. Or if you've read all of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Or Mark Millar's Marvel Knights Spider-Man. These are all very good Spider-Man stories that are worth checking out before getting into BND stuff.

The BND stuff has been wildly inconsistent. You have the Dan Slott/John Romita JR. New Ways to Die story that seems to be very well received, the Zeb Wells/Chris Bachalo 4 issue arc that appeared right at the beginning of BND that people really liked, and Character Assassination.

Everything else is from mediocre (Mark Waid's stuff which would show up in Death and Dating), Joe Kelly's stuff (in the Punisher trade), or just bad, like Marc Guggenheim and Bob Gale's stories.

Got all the USM stuff. Or rather Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. Not totally caught up with MA Spider-Man. I liked MA Avengers a lot more.

Haven't read (PAD's?) FNSM. Yes to Millar's MKSM. I wish they used the redesigned Vulture and Electro costumes more.

I've heard New Ways to Die is unanimously good. I've really liked Dan Slott's writing in the past and he's a cool dude too.

A shame because I really like JRJR's art. I was interested in Kraven's First Hunt and the Menace stuff the most. I had heard BND 2 by Bob Gale was poor.

Can I skip some things and still get the main story?

I feel like this may be a stupid question, but do comic book values decrease if you read them. I order mine bagged and boarded (but I don't really foresee myself selling these before passing them down to my kids).

No, as long as you don't bend or fold them. They're made to be read, no matter how people try and sell that CGC or whatever it is.

But really, individual comics have had their value cut out from under them by trades and being able to get issues/scenes online, coupled with the fact that most new comics don't create characters as much as they did in the 60's, which is why Spidey and the X-Men old issues still fetch a high price. Venom and Gambit are basically the only "new" characters where there debut issue still fetches a high price, but even then it's only 100 bucks.

Thank you, I feel much better now and will continue to enjoy reading.

Oh before I forget, I'm really loving ASM, but I feel like I'm being very narrow minded in keeping one focus. I'm looking for some other recommended comics, I was thinking Dark Avengers. The only thing is I generally don't like when there are a lot of main characters, I prefer a single focus story. Any suggestions?

Single focus? Punisher MAX is really good, as is the Brian Bendis Daredevil run (you could find in trades).

Ultimate Spider-Man is really really good throughout it's entire run.

I was looking at Ultimate Spider-Man, unfortunately I feel the need to get it from #1 and that is gonna run me more than I'm willing to spend right now. Second dumb question of the day, what does the term 'in trades' mean? Last one for now, I swear! Still looking at Dark Avengers - is this a good read? (I know I said single character but the story arc seems pretty cool)

Dark Avengers is very good, yes.

In trades is when they bundle comics and put it on better paper, usually at a slightly cheaper price.

So thanks to Twitter, I've become a fan of Rebekah Isaacs. Apparently she's doing the art for the DV8 relaunch next year, so I'll be picking that up.

Only I've never read anything from WildStorm, which is really messing with my OCD completionist tendencies. Would it be worth it to try and track down back issues of DV8 and Gen 13?

So I often go to the local bookstore to read comic TPBs and drink coffee. While my intention is to buy all of the TPBs I enjoyed, I seem to have run out. I don't really go for most of the actual super hero comics. I liked a few, like World War Hulk, The Ultimates, and Ultimate Spiderman, but most of them fall flat for me. I tried to read The Dark Knight Returns today but it didn't click.

Comics I did enjoy were Fables, Preacher, and The Walking Dead. I was hoping to get a couple recommendations that are, hopefully, at the store I frequent.

After a certain point, you're going to have to look beyond what's in the bookstore's limited selection and hit up Amazon or the comic store.

Anyway, Jeff Smith's "Bone" is pretty good mix of humor and fantasy, Hellblazer is a great, long-running supernatural series with runs by by the likes of Ennis (Preacher) and Ellis (Transmetropolitan) to enjoy, Hellboy's another unique supernatural adventure series that people tend to likes (if the trades look good to you, the Library editions are a good investment), and Junji Ito's Uzumaki is a great series about normal people coping with the increasingly horrifying supernatural occurrences in their small town. Google them for scans and summaries.

All of these should be available at Borders or whatever.

Quid you'd like Invincible it is kinda like Ultimate Spider-Man but written by the guy who writes The Walking Dead.

Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men is another book I think you'd like.

Also check out the first few Runaways books, you can find them in either really nice hardcovers or little manga sized books.

And if you haven't read Scott Pilgrim yet that's a must.

okay, so I moved to a new city about a year ago where I didn't have a local comic shop nearby. There were a few shops, but all 10+ miles from my place, which to me, is unacceptable.

Basically I stopped reading comics a year ago.

So now I moved again and I have a shop three blocks away. They guy who runs it seems cool, the shop is clean, decent back issues, and good pull list discounts. I need to know what to get to catch up on though.

Here are my main titles I was reading before the stop.

Ms Marvel, New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, All the Ultimate Titles (before Ultimatum), Walking Dead (stopped around issue 50), Invincible (stopped before the costume change), Buffy, Angel, Star Wars Legacy, Star Wars KoTOR, Fables, and a few others.

I need to know what's happened in the Marvel and Image U over the last year and what I should be reading.

I left off when Hulk came back to earth and got into the big battle royale with Sentry, and then there was a red hulk.

    Thanks!

Secret Invasion, where the skrulls invade Earth, happens after the stuff with Hulk, and is very important in understanding what is going on right now. Dark Avengers is also a great read and will give you a good idea of what the Dark Reign, where Norman Osborn is head of HAMMER (SHIELD's replacement) is all about, and has some beautiful art. If you liked the Bendis New/Mighty Avengers you will probably like Dark Avengers.

Yeah, catch up on New and Mighty Avengers up to Secret Invasion, read Secret Invasion, and then pick up Dark Avengers and keep on trucking with New Avengers.

In my personal opinion, after Bendis left Mighty after SI it's gotten stupid. The current writer, Dan Slott, loves Hank Pym so much that he literally had the embodiment of the universe tell him he rocks. After punching him. So, I'd say continuing on with Mighty is your call.

You can ignore Hulk since you last read it, it is a bad book.

Mighty Avengers has been the weakest Avenger book for the reasons Faynor wrote.

Ms. Marvel has been bad, but I think it's been bad since around issue #25, really. The past few issues were trying to be poignant and deal with Moonstone being Ms. Marvel, but it didn't have an emotional impact.

Fables had the Great Fables Crossover that was a fun story.

And do not read Ultimatum. Just realize that the world was wrecked by Magneto, it is fixed now, and that lots of heroes/mutants are dead. That is it.

I agree with all of this so hard. New Avengers is the main storyline, and is always pretty good. Mighty Avengers was great up until Hank Pym came in and douched it up. Dark Avengers is probably my favorite book right now, the story is twisting around pretty nicely.

It was the thought bubbles that made me kind of like Ms Marvel. Talking about her I thought there was hints of sexual tension between her and my boy Sentry, which was kinda funny.

Does anyone know, or have a link to a marvel 'timeline' of sorts? The reason I ask is because I currently have ASM starting at BND to the current issues, All of New Avengers and Dark Avengers and all of Deadpool Vol 3. I started reading ASM from BND (546) and I'm just trying to figure out where these all tie into each other. I was reading between #555-#558 (sorry can't recall exactly which it was) but Spidey mentions a Skrull and I didn't think that occured in the storyline yet. I must say, though, reading comics again has made me gleeful to get done with my day, it's the last thing I do before bed.

Brand New Day has a really messed up timeline that the editors screwed up (and it always varied by whether Brevoort or Wacker were discussing it). After his deal with the devil Spider-Man was apparently off radar for 6 months to a year, but that can't sync up with any book outside of ASM.

In General, around New Avengers issue #37 is when Spider-Man and BND tries to sync up with New Avengers. New Avengers has about 8 issues of basic filler during Secret Invasion, so around #48 is when the Dark Avengers appear and have their own series.

well, as far as batman goes, definitely check out the new batman and robin book, particularly the first 3 issues. it's going in three-issue arcs with a different artist for each arc. they just wrapped up one that has gotten mixed reviews around here (i personally liked it, but others thought the art and writing was too muddy) and a new arc with the fantastic cameron stewart on art will be starting in january.

as far as marvel, what kind of stuff? brubaker's captain america might well be the pinnacle of marvel's current titles as far as i'm concerned, and his just recently concluded run on daredevil was fucking fantastic as well.

i'd also recommend "dark avengers" (the first trade of which i just finished and loved), as it's a good look at the current state of affairs in the marvel universe after the skrull invasion.
