I still dont think you need to know a shit ton about Thor to enjoy the new JMS series.
Well it's just that a lot of the new series follows on from the end of the last series, with the gods dieing and Thor going to sleep and all, so I would've expected new readers to be a bit lost. Apparently that's not the case!
all you need to know from that is "all the gods died"
which is all covered in the first few pages of the first issue of the JMS series
So I really want to get into comics, the only problem is I can't decide what to read. The only thing I have to my name is the Civil War Trade. I could read all my Dad's 60's or 70's comics (Forget what era he has the very first Conan I know that!) but I'd like a little more modern. I am a little bit of a Marvel guy but I can try and be open.
One other thing that might be a problem is I HATE just jumping into a story I like to start from the very begining. EX USM I was going to buy the first trade version then I looked and saw something like version 13. I also would like to read Secret Invasion but where the hell do I begin?
One more problem or maybe I am an idiot, there is only two - three places I can think of for comics. A hobby shop that has a lot but I can't find the newer stuff I'd like to, Chapters!! and a couple of corner stores.
Well Any Input is appreciated. Thanks!
P.S Where is a good place to start with Iron Fist .
well, with ultimate x-men, you appear to me confused about the trade paperback system. it's basically all one long story, so the number 13 you saw was the 13th book in the series. you should be able to find the first one if you poke around in comic shops or some bookstores. (i don't know if you have borders in canada, but they generally have a pretty decent selection of basic trades like ultimate x-men). another option is, of course, amazon.com (or instocktrades.com or one of the various other specialty comics websites. i'm not sure how many of them have service to canada, though)
secret invasion is a currently ongoing story, which means that for right now you can really only find it at a comic shop (or, again, some bookstores) while it's being published in monthly issues. if you're willing to wait, then eventually it will be collected into one convenient book, but there's currently three issues out right now if you want to go ahead and just jump in.
as far as actually finding a comic shop, check this website. you enter your zip code and it lists all comic shops nearby
as for iron fist, there's already one collection out and the second should be out soon, if it's not already.

But most of us comic fans already know where the comic shop is. Now, if you had a website that could locate girlfriends for comic fans, you'd really have something there.
Most of Deadpool's solo series is not available in trade. I'm not sure if Marvel is going to do it or not. They should, because every other comic person on the internet loves him and would buy every trade as it came out.
"Tales of Asgard" was a regular back-up staple of the Thor comic for like ten years - and most of those stories were not myth-based. They just haven't been reprinted. Plus miniseries, other backups, etc.
Also, the sales of Cable & Deadpool didn't really reflect the widespread internet love, did it?
For two B-list characters with a B-list creative team, which suddenly lost half of what made it work due to editorial fiat, the book did pretty well, consistently pulling in numbers around the 25k mark. Which means it did better than She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, The Order, New Warriors, Ant-Man, and pretty much the entirety of DC's replacement/legacy hero launches.
I'm still not even sure why it was canceled, since it was really consistent, despite being under-promoted and fucked around with due to editorial edicts.
So, I'm totally new to comics and need to get in. While I've absorbed a good idea of what's good via observation, I don't exactly have unlimited time, so I need to limit backreading by sticking to relatively new series, such as Titan Vol. 2, which wikipedia say started earlier this year, Batman and the Outsiders Vol. 2, and perhaps Teen Titans Vol. 3 and Captain America when the new guy starts.
Is this a good list, and are there any other series that I can start reading with little backreading? I want to get into X-Men, but I'm unclear aboud the destinction between X-Men: Legacy and Uncanny X-Men, so how should I enter?
Just gonna pimp the books I would fuck if they were people
But Immortal Iron Fist, Moon Knight, and Nova require almost zero knowledge of the characters
And the first two, at least, are starting new arcs this month

Just to clarify
you want to start reading singles right? Not trade waiting

I'll read trade, as I want to know what's going on at all times and what precedent it has, I just don't want to jump into the comic version of the Wheel of Time, where I pick up the most recent book only to find that there's several forest's worth of backreading. That why I included Teen Titans vol. 3, because I might be willing to take five year's worth, maybe. For other's (X-Men), I need a point where I can start reading that was published within, let's say, the last three years (how many trade books would that be?) or is expected to be published in the next year that I can pick up and start fresh from. I should be able to get any backstory out of the way, as I can polish off multiple volumes of Manga in a single sitting, but I'll be going to college soon ands already have a room ful;l of books on my personal reading list.
pretty sure the reason it was cancelled is because the X-Men office had big plans for the character
- Cable I mean
Yeah, but the comic was surviving fine after Cable left. They could've renamed it to just Deadpool and carried on.
Instead of relaunching it with Daniel Way writing.
Daniel Way on deadpool makes me so incredibly sad. I'm going to buy it anyways, but only in the hope that (much like Ghost Rider) another writer will come along and start to do good stuff with Deadpool once Daniel Way is gone.

No I understood that part
but you want to be at the point where you are buying the single issues as they come out each month right? Or do you intend to just continue reading the stories as they come out in trade

I don't know how it would change anything, but I doubt I'd have the patience for trade waiting.
Well because if you're not planning on trade waiting, then for example Uncanny X-Men #500 comes out this month with a new creative team and is basically a perfect jumping on point

Except for the art, oh god the art...I'm still going to buy it because Brubaker and Fraction are cool.

I wouldn't mind picking it up
that's going to be the case with any story worth telling
I didnt see it on instocktrades
I've obviously heard good things about it, and I was considering trade-waiting this one
since we're like 10 issues into the series now

Have you tried the Comic Shop Locator?

But at least we are doubly sure he will use the site

Moar!
Deadpool Classic contains the character's origins, and the first sisue of the Joe Kelly run, which set the bar for all Deadpool stories to come.
Other than that, just check out the Cable and Deadpool trade paperbacks.
If you have a comic shop near you, or want to check out eBay or MyComicShop.com, I strongly urge you to purchase Taskmaster, Deadpool #65-69, and Agent X.

I'm hoping they add another artist to the rotation (like Mike Choi)
