OXM Disc 80 Killed my 360!

ZercofZercof Registered User regular
edited February 2008 in Games and Technology
Its my only explanation. I've had a launch 360 console since, well launch. Never before have I put an OXM disc into
my console before, until disc 80 came out with its "exclusive" Rock Band songs. Being a fan/completionist whore, I had to get it.

I load up the disc, get the content, and while its in, I notice an update for backwards compatible xbox games. Since
I'm on live whenever I'm on, I thought I'de have all released patches, but for some reason, I installed the OXM patch.

After this, I decide to run the Turok demo, and once any action starts, it freezes. Ok, fuck the OXM disc, I put in Rock Band
and it freezes twice in the menus and after a song the console clicks and I lose video. Reboot the console and Red Ring of Death.

Thank you for listening to me whine.

Any Comments?

I think that when people try to load up a game and it causes problems and eventually RROD, that just means that it was close to RROD when you tried loading up the game.. Thats why there were initial problems and it eventually lead to the greek fucking tragedy that is RROD

I'm pretty sure any time someone with actual hardware knowledge has tested those fans (like the Nyko InterCooler) and talked about them, they've come to the conclusion that they actually make matters worse.

Anyway, it happens. Mine didn't RRoD until the night the Bioshock demo came out. I stayed up to download it, loaded it up, got to the very first point where you could control movement, and...bam, RRoD.

Just hope that Microsoft gets yours taken care of faster than the month I was without mine. Luckily, it showed up just three days before Halo came out.

No. Not those intercooler's. I wouldn't be surprised if that causes RROD's in some boxes. Laptop cooler underneath is a suggested item. I have a fan blowing air right across the back, pulling heat away from the components. Move the air and the components have a much higher chance of survival.

My European Launch 360 has red ringed 3 times and still works. Havent needed a replacement yet!

My cooling solution for the first year was having my study window open and putting my 360 on the windowsill when it was like 10 degrees outside.

I've heard a failure analysis engineer speak on this specific subject. Non moving air at 32f? components will still burn up. Moving air at 90f, the same component survived. Thermal dispersion is the biggest part. Moving the air is almost as important as having a place for it to go. Adding a laptop cooler just increases volume of air moving around the 360.(for horzontal setups). The main cause for RROD is the BGA overheating and warping. Reducing that heat will *possibly* reduce the chance of that happening to my 360. It is much more noisy when its running but thats a small price to pay.

Open window + freezing cold air outside + wind = decent air cooling.

I had to put my Oxbox in the freezer for 15mins to get it to start, but as long as it was going, it would keep running. As soon as you turned it off, it wouldn't start up again until it was right cold. I had to do this for a couple months, until it just stopped working entirely. Sometimes I'd want to play a game, put the xbox in the freezer, and then forget about it for a few hours... probably what ended up killing it... there were claw marks on the inside of the freezer.

New games/content increase the use of the console and thus trigger more to start failing. Trends develop and someone always fingers the latest popular game, update, whatever. Popular games get played more so there are more on/off cycles leading to heat stress failure and then popular games in particular get a lot of the blame.

I think that the particular disc has an effect as well.

My 360 was perfectly fine until I tossed in an OXM disc. It made a terrible noise while trying to load it, and the disc could not be read. Soon afterwards, the RROD appeared.

The reason that the USB powered fans that attach to the back of the 360 are actually worse for your 360 is this:

The 360 RRODs and has other problems due to excessive heat inside the casing.

The problem with the fans that latch onto the back of the 360s like the Intercooler is two-fold.

First, the fans do not provide a significant enough boost in flow rate on top of the default system fans to make a worthwhile difference in air flowrate through the case.

Secondly, by powering the fans via the USB ports, you're increasing the heat generated by the internal components of the 360.

So you're essentially adding more heat to the internal components of the 360, but not taking a significant portion of additional heat out of the case by additional external fans.

The intercoolers are just a noisy gimmick. Just keep your machine in a well-ventilated entertainment center that's maintained for dust and it should be fine by itself.

Man I've had my xbox since launch and it's never had a problem but it was noisy as fuck, like I'd have to have the sound up high to hear the game cause it was like a jet taking off. I didn't really care but roomates were like fuck dude, and I'm all like whoa calm down. It also ran pretty hot and I'm surpised it hasn't melted. Anyway, got a can of compressed, shot some air into it and like a a huge ass cloud of dust came out, like all over me and my bed and that shit was everywhere...point to this boring story, it ran a lot quieter after and a lot cooler. I've even noticed less slow downs in the dashboard which is awesome. So yeah I suggest you guys do that once in a while...

FYI, Unwritten rule of Xbox 360s. As soon as a game comes out that you really want to play, within the first few minutes of playing that game. It will Red Ring. This rule is only sidestepped with new consoles or if has happened to you before. If you haven't had a Red ring yet... be afraid.

On that note, I myself have not a RROD yet but... I am really looking forward to Fallout 3...

There was something about that time, though, because mine and a lot of others went all at once. I think the Spring update came out shortly before. Crackdown and Halo 3 beta were the games that were played when mine failed.

Then again, it could have been the warming up from the winter months.

This is the one time I will disagree with you slash. Simply moving air around *may* be enough to keep RROD from happening. I recommend an externally powered, high volume fan. I don't know the temperature point where the BGA starts deforming but If I can keep it lower, I will.

You may not actually be disagreeing with me. I was referring really only to the Intercooler and like-products that work the same way.

If you use something externally powered - avoiding the problem of adding to internal heat by the USB components and power

and you also use a high-volume fan - which may provide enough air flow to actually contribute to case cooling (as opposed to the negligible effects of the Intercooler/like products)

then you may end up avoiding the "make things worse" scenario caused by the Intercooler/like products.

It is definitely true that increased air flow, particularly cooler air, around and through a console/pc will help prevent thermal problems.

The rub comes about in the implementation and effectiveness of that "air flow." The Intercooler has proven to compound, rather than lessen, the RROD problem.

But something completely external and significant in its airflow will certainly help.
