External Hard drive Borked?

Thanks in advance.

I've got an I/O Magic 250GB hard drive. Today I tried to connect it to my PC, and was unable to access it, after which I noticed the lights on the HD were off. I restarted the PC, and noticed that the HD was making a sound like you'd hear if you dropped a marble on a wood floor from an inch off the ground. So, click-bounce-bounce, followed by a beep.

This doesn't look good.

Is my data salvageable?

My roommate's external HD went to crap a few months ago. Some IT guys he works with told him to put it in a plastic bag and set it in the freezer for a couple hours. I think it had to be laid a certain way too. I don't know the specifics of it, but maybe you could find out using the info I've given.

It sounded ridiculous to me, but it ended up working just long enough to transfer everything off the drive. As it warmed back up he said it got increasingly slower until it died again.
