I've never crouched while sticky jumping and it seems to work just fine if you time it right. Don't know about rocket jumping though, never really do that.
You ALWAYS should crouch while doing either. You will notice a significant difference if you perform it right.
Edit: Don't listen to theantipop. If you did JUMP -> DUCK -> ROCKET you would probably just duck into the rocket. Try doing it like duck -> JUMP almost at the same time, but performing the duck a smidgen of a second before hand. He is right about HL1 though. That would really help out.

I don't think it matters which comes first as long as you do them at roughly the same time. You want to be as close to the ground as possible, crouched, when the explosion hits you.

Once upon a time there was me. And I made a spray. The spray was a giant speech bubble that said "LOL!" It was really obnoxious, but I always get a kick out of it, even if nobody else does.
The first thing I did with the spray was stand in front of it and act silly.
After that got old, I decided to spray it over other people's sprays!
That started wearing thin, too, so I decided to spray it over my victims.
One day I started to get a little more complex. I wanted people to see my spray in the freeze frame AFTER they died. So I built this... in front of the enemy spawn.
Well, it wasn't long before people started getting wise, so I had to repair it frequently.
Guys can we try http://www.fpsbanana.com/maps/46477 on the Custom server? It would be really sniper friendly BUT there is an trigger that triggers when you suicide on your own top of the building to damage all enemy snipers at their sniper room, and even if its only half as fun as in UT99 it would be more fun then most custom maps in my opinion.
I'll 2nd this, if you decide to 2nd ctf_yaaargh.
Plus, this map was always the bomb on UT.

It took us forever to get a decent truce going, but we managed to get a good stack as Pyros in Hydro. When Well started we tried to get a better stack at the trains, but I didn't get pictures of that. It wasn't a bad stack, but people broke the truce for a while until a brilliant idea was had. Stacking here, we could get even higher. And finally, after a double jump by a scout and a rocket jump by a soldier, we had our Best Stack. Soon after everyone died in violent explosions, but that is to be expected.
That picture was taken about 2 seconds before I ran forward and axed iowa for not being a pyro
Actually, I believe I killed him as a scout. I did not know of his picture plans, so I came close to ruining his epic composition. That was a fun match. We tried to get a good pile-up for about a whole match but someone would always light everyone on fire.
