Baiten Kaitos Origins. The very late GCN era prequel to Baiten Kaitos.

Basically, take what was good about BK (the story, the setting, the music) do a complete 180 on the worst part about the game (shitty voice acting replaced by one of the best jobs ever done on a NA release) and streamline the interesting part of the game (the card battle system, one deck for everyone, combos only go up, faster paced) and you have one of the best RPGs from last generation. Criminally overlooked during the protracted death of the GCN, it can now be yours for a steal. Looks fantastic in 480p, plays like a dream.

What's going on in the gameplay? It's some sort of isometric beat-em-up? It looks like it could be fun. It also looks like Luminous Arc. D: Pray that the similarity is limited to anime arts and dialogue illustration style.

The art is the only aspect of this game that attracted me at all. It doesn't look generic. It looks really vibrant and unique. I mean, how many RPGs a year style themselves after oldschool Tezuka stuff? Most of the major RPGs of the last ten years have that hideous Final Fantasy shojo style to them.

You guys made me get Baten Kaitos Origins, god dammit. Now I'm going to have to beat the first one.

Nah, I didn't necropost just for that :P. There's been a couple of interesting tidbits of info. on Soma Bringer that have been revealed. Shamelessly stolen from Neogaf:
Here are some notes from the interview:

    - Takahashi is producing the game, and it's his project from the start

    - Right from the beginning Mitsuda was involved, Takahashi didn't want to make a game without Mitsuda's music

    - Mitsuda would never turn down a friend who worked with him on Xenogears and Xenosaga, in a way it feels like a reunion

    - Originally this was planned as a normal RPG, but then they realized that RPGs aren't ideally suited for handhelds and tried to make it an action RPG

    - When it turned out really well they decided that this was the way to go, because now you can have both the story of a RPG as well as the ability to just play short bursts on the go

    - The scenario in Soma Bringer differs from his previous works in the sense that previously the scenario was written first and the gameplay was made to fit into the scenario. This time they worked on the gameplay first, and based on what kind of dungeons, locations and stuff they wanted the player to experience as part of the gameplay, the scenario was then developed to maximize the gameplay and locations as well as expand the worldview and characters

    - The worldview is focused on the fact that Soma is the ultimate energy of the planet and used for everything. This energy source is a completely normal thing on this planet and part of their daily lives. The ring that surrounds the entire planet is also a key point that the story will revolve around

    - There will be over 300 different weapons in the game, and you won't be able to get them all or even see them all in a single playthrough

    - Lots of customization and freedom for the player to build the character however he wants in terms of stats, skills, etc

    - Mitsuda says that this game will feature the highest quality possible yet on the DS. There will be two completely different mixes of the sound in the game depending if you select speaker or headphone output in the settings. This is because the speakers on the DS lack bass, and the output levels are different. Hence to produce the optimum sound on either speaker or headphone, two different mixes are needed

    - Takahashi plays Soma Bringer with his young son and older daughter. It's lots of fun and he hopes that with the wifi multiplayer mode friends and family can get together and play the game together, fighting over loot and defeating bosses together. It'll be different for everyone but the social aspect definitely makes it more fun

    - When you clear the main story, 3 randomly generated dungeons will open up. Not only will they offer tons of gameplay content, but there will be added story episodes as well

    - After beating the game, higher difficulty levels will be available to replay the game with even tougher enemies

Here's the original interview from where all this stuff came from with if anyone is interested: http://touch-ds.jp/crv/vol9/001.html

Also revealed from the interview: Soma Bringer is being planned for a series.

    Now for some videos:

Credits to duckroll of Neogaf for the writeup, the links, and the traslation of the interview.

+1. It's a close race with Persona 3, but I'd say BKO might just be the best RPG of last generation.

Anyway, with regard to Soma Bringer, I applaud Mitsuda for the way he did the soundtrack. The "headphones" option in the menu actually switches between two near-identical soundtracks: one optimized for the DS speakers (read: no crackling like you would get on, for example, Apollo Justice at full volume) and one optimized for headphones (read: awesome).

BK:O is joint second best RPG ever made (with BG II).

The combat system in BK was superb and in BK:O they pretty much made it perfect. I've always preferred turn based to action because it's much more strat than mashy, and their card combo timed turns system completely alleviated the problem of TB being too slow/dull.

I will buy any RPG monolithsoft make based on those two games, unless it gets a 1/10 everywhere.

This looks like Tales of Symphonia levels of awesome in the battle system, but with music by Mitsuda and Takahashi running the show. That immediately makes this game my most anticipated title until forever (or Diablo III is announced, but that's pretty much the same thing).

Also, I need to go back to BKO. I played it for hours on end while I was sick and then between the spiked fever and the are-we-dreaming-what-the-the-fuck-are-we-in-the-past flashback stuff it was like going back to a nice park you'd visited for the first time while on acid. Sure it's still pretty, but the trees aren't neon colored and signing and none of the birds are tap dancing. It's just not the same.

At first I was disappointed that they simplified the combat a bit by removing the numbers that let you do the 1-9 combos

But then they introduced combos across all 3 characters and stuff so in the end I think I preferred it, it was much more refined.
