...their job or violating civil rights?
There was a video floating around the newsroom yesterday, as well as the interwebs, of a cop in Baltimore who decided to visit his mighty wrath upon a skateboarder.

Here is the news story courtesy of the Baltimore Sun of the aftermath:

Several people think the cop should be a)riding a desk, b) put on the rubber gun squad or c) given a forced early retirement. I am personally rooting for d) having his ass sued off so bad his grandchildren will be in debt.
Then there is this older video of a teenager with a camera with microphone installed onto his seat headrest. You can hear the rest...

This slightly different case give me pause because it seems to me that this kid was trolling for such an encounter. Why else install a camera? Kicks?
...or maybe not. He said in an interview that he had other run-ins with the law and he had the rig installed so that he could more accuratly represent his own side of the story.
And in yet another older video there is a a cop jacking up a squad of unruley skater punks - especially the girl - who deserved the vicious arm-twisting she got.

I personally feel that citizens need safegaurds from overzealous officers of the law, as shown in the first and third videos, but don't the officers in turn deserve protections against those looking for trouble such as the second video?
I'm not saying that #2 is in fact WRONG, but it feels suspect.

"Across this line, YOU WILL NOT... also Dude? Chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please."
It makes it seem like it's a lot more frequent than it really is. Cops aren't predominately Zimbardo-esque violent, abusive, self-important cocks like this guy is.
I'm not a father, but you would think that any adult would have said something at watching someone elses kid getting manhandled by the officer.
Interestingly enough, in the Baltimore Sun article there is yet another allegation against the officer where he whipped out his tazer and shoved it into some 17 year old kids face, then kicked his legs out from underneath him.
A hippie defending the cops? Quick, delete it before the fabric of space-time rips!
Notice the title under my name. It's a problem with the individual, not the organization.
It wasn't to arrest him, it was to search him because the cops thought he was lying when he said he could not stand up on his own. The cop in question was put on leave without pay and the sheriff's office is condemning that officer.
Was the guy kind of baiting the cop? Yeah, sure. But frankly I don't want a cop who can't control himself on the force. I mean, the guy wasn't being THAT dickish. He could have been more polite, but the cop pretty much exploded on him. Not only that, the cop admitted that he was going to make up charges. I mean, if you're going to make up charges, be subtle about it. Be like "you know, I'm not sure I saw your turn signal on when you turned into this parking lot", not "I'm going to make some shit up!"
The cop 1) lost his cool, and 2) was stupid enough to openly threaten to make up charges. Was the guy being a dick? Yes. Was the kid in the first video being a dick? Yes. Were the kids in the third video being dicks? Yes. But we should hold officers to a higher standard, because they have power. As Doc said in the SE++ youtube thread when this came up, the cops escalated the situation when they should have de-escalated it. It's possible to make the argument that what they did wasn't against the rules, per se, but they behaved improperly and they should be punished for it.
And you don't think cops go out of their way to cover up after their own to preserve their sense of honor?
On the black screen
It's not about honor, it's about protecting the image of the precinct. One bad cop can ruin the relationship between police and their community for a decade, so yes some police officials think the best thing to do is keep it as quiet as possible and move on. Whether that is right or wrong is easily debatable however.
Being a police officer is a shitty job with shitty pay that nobody respects.
So two types of people choose to be cops:
1. Good people who like to help.
2. People who like to be in control of situations and abuse shit.
which one do you think is more common?
Are those people actually police? Why do they look like rent-a-cops?
Like someone said earlier, these kind of police are the exception to the rule. There's always some incompetent/assholish person in every profession. Police are no different.
Given that these cops are usually moved to places where they can't cause this kind of problem, or just flat out kicked off the force, I think cover-ups are going to be less frequent as well. I also think that, to some extent, there's a reaction on the individual level with cops that will make them want to go out of their way to do the right thing and actually seem cool. Think the two cops from Superbad, but not as incompetent.
These 3 officers should be arrested and charged, rather than being allowed to hide behind their badge and not be held accountable in the way a civilian would. If anything, they should be held to a higher standard than your average citizen and prosecuted accordingly. 2 cases of plain and simple assault, the second video mentioned is just outright abuse of his position of authority.
As a side note, if what the police in the US agree to put on TV is regarded as acceptable or good law enforcement, it says quite a lot. I dont know of any other first world country where police feel the need to draw down on a guy they pulled over for rolling through a stop sign, or grounding and jumping on some kid who asked why he had been stopped and pulled out of his car to be searched. Slightly overzealous would be an understatement if that is normal behavior.
Nah.
I've been harassed walking down the street with my Paintball pants on, searched, and I've been handcuffed and taken in for telling them I'm going to record everything they do because I don't trust them.
Summary: Cops are douchebags.
GM: Rusty Chains (DH Ongoing)
I've never had a negative encounter with a cop so I do not harbor the same emotions many seem to.
I mean, seriously, what the fuck? Who needs both? Isn't the taser supposed to replace the gun? How could he possibly end up in a situation where the gun is sufficient but the taser is not?
Hell, if I were to walk up and do that to a kid who's skateboarding where he's not supposed to, I'd probably end up a convicted sex offender.
Oh I dunno, a shootout?
Tasers don't work so good vs. guns. Especially in range.
And you can't exactly reload it.
But what would you use against a ninja or a zombie? A taser would be more effective than a firearm against either, and who knows if a cop might be called to expel one or the other from the city they patrol. Well, that's disingenuous. You would never even see the ninja so a taser would be no good there either. But zombies? Man, they just eat those bullets. Such a waste.

Oh yes I forgot the special 'no shooting' bubble surrounding certain places where no one will EVER use a gun or plan a terrorist attack.
You're right, stupid transit cops expecting the unexpected, jeez.
I mean these guys aren't even cops, they're just security guards who recently managed to convince the government that they deserve badges.
Once I accidentally turned left on a 'no left turns' street and this cop stopped me and asked me what the hell I was doing. He asked for my liscence, but I forgot it in my other pants. Then he let me go. Also one time some cop showed up on the highway and helped my mom change a tire. I hate those motherfuckers.
If only.
