The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
FreakAngels started today. It is one of Warren Ellis's new projects. It is a webcomic with art by newcomer Paul Duffield, who seems to combine European and Japanese elements, creating a very unique style. Check it out!
Seems alright, but maybe Ellis should focus on his paid work that is constantly late, like, say, Thunderbolts, instead of doing random freelance or independant work. I konw Thunderbolts is his fault simply because Deodato said he had to go find other work since he could never get any scripts. Marvel and DC should really crack down on people they pay for monthly work that do stuff like this.
Yeah freakangels is blocked at my work, for whatever reason. Even before the comic went up, which I find weird, as the site itself doesnt contain any naughty elements.
Either way, ellis seems to have waaay too much going on to be able to hold any consistent release schedule. I mean he has 3 avatar titles, with and impeding 4th one. Planetary is still technically in the works, as is Desolation Jones (even though its on hiatus). There is another Apparat novel in the works, and then there is Thunderbolts and new-universal for Marvel, another secret project for them. And then there is Fell.
And thats besides the Castlevania movie script, and a TCM show he is developing.
No wonder there is so much shuffling.
But I cant complain about having more Warren Ellis. Even though that means some shit gets the axe.
I liked it, will definitely be keeping an eye on it. And isn't he also going to be going on AXM? At least the release schedule of that can't get any worse... right?
According to this interview with the head of Avatar, it isn't a side/freelance project. It is an Avatar Press project with eventual plans to release it in print.
Hell, the creators are even being paid for it. It should be an interesting experiment, anyway.

shame that he likes creator owned original material more than superhero books

I don't care what he likes doing more. He's a grown man. He has a job that he is being paid to do. If i'm late or don't bother doing my job on Friday because I want to take a long weekend or go paint the fence or work at my other job, I get fired.
Ellis should be doing Planetary or Thunderbolts or the couple other books he's got on the go but is consistently late with. Not off starting a new one. I could care less if it's creator owned or original or superhero, either be a professional and quit the current ones or hold off on new ones until you're finished the current stuff.
Marvel and his other publishers are just as bad for letting him, and numerous other creators, get away with all the shit they do. I can understand delays if it's the only thing you are working on or if there's only one book out of the half a dozne your working on, but when every single book you write is late or indefinitely delayed because you feel like going off and starting something else, there's somethign wrong.

Except he's also being paid to do this job too. By Avatar Press. One of the publishers you are saying is just "letting him get away with shit".
So it's not like he is just a kid off playing with a new toy when he should be at work, he is actually undertaking a professional project with the support of a publisher. I know what you're saying about taking on too much and falling behind, but get your facts right before you start ranting about unprofessional conduct and avoiding jobs he is being paid to do in favor of pet projects.
but they are pet projects. he comes up with these ideas and says 'i'd like to write this crazy non-superhero book about medieval england or whatever'' to avatar and they say 'ok' because they'd be retarded to turn down a moneymaker writer like ellis just because his books are always late.
if he can't turn in scripts on time, he shouldn't work on monthy books, and that's just the hard truth. change the schedule, if you have to! say it's bimonthly. say it's quarterly. whatever needs to happen, but deadlines matter.
FreakAngels artwork is alright, but the "feel" so far hasn't really gripped me. I am ungrippeded. Plus her outfit and attitude suggest = goth/emo which cause me to give the book less of a chance.
To me character depth doesn't require substance abuse and dressing like an idiot.

I like the art. Very Josh Middleton-ish. As for her dress and demeanor, Ellis' hard-on for Suicide Girls is well documented. But with a scant handful of pages to go on for now, I'm not passing any judgments on the character or story yet.
Much: Agreed. If I remember to I'll check out issue #2 for sure, god knows things change as they roll along. So far though it rates a tentative 2 +1/2 "Meh's" out of 10 "Meh's".
What does that mean? Does that mean you like it, because you gave it 2.5 "mehs" instead of 10? 10 mehs would be pretty bad, right? If something is only kind of meh, you like it, but you don't really feel strong about it. Right?
Yeah, Ellis enjoys a weird aesthetic... punk/body-mod/goth stuff shows up a lot on his page. "grinders"

So I guess I'm the only who thinks that steampunk gyrocopters in the dystopian near future has potential?

It seemed pretty Steampunk-y to me, which definitely has my attention. Not enough Steampunk out there.
I understand that Planetary is waiting on Cassady. I thought Fell was waiting on Templesmith. He does have a ton of projects going on though.
So about FreakAngels... I really liked it. The art is really neat and the premise is very interesting.
I think Fell is sort of waiting on both of them at this point. Still, Fell's nature means it's not like we're left hanging in the middle of a story arc or whatever.
And Planetary is more of less finished now anyway; the main story was wrapped up in the last issue and the next is just going to be an epilogue of sorts.

That doesn't mean I don't want my giant, leather-bound tomb of pure awesome edition. And that won't come out until its done.
It's decent enough for what it is, but definitely enough to keep me coming back to find out what the hell's going on. In other words, it's a perfect way to start off a story, especially a web comic.
In response to the workload issue. Come on you guys, this is Warren Ellis. Inundating himself with a inhuman workload is just his thing. From him I would expect nothing less. It's not as if the man sleeps.
Also, when a book is late it is not always because the writer couldn't meet deadline. There are of course, other factors.
I'll read FreakAngels for free online because it is free and the artwork is golden.
In Re: Warren Ellis's workload, while I do think it sucks that he continues to stretch himself too thin with too many projects, which causes or contributes to delays across the board, what can anyone do about it? Put a gun to his head and force him to finish Planetary? Chain him to his desk until he finishes another 6 issues of Thunderbolts? No publisher in his/her right mind is going to turn down his work, even when it's late...and sometimes half-baked. The price to pay for his particular brand of genius, I guess.

for the record Ellis technically has finished Planetary
I think this looks pretty neat so far and it seems a bit early on to make any calls on it, and I'm just a sucker for the look and designs of whats been shown so far plus I'm a Ellis fanboy.

the dude is juggling books like a motherfucker, and quite frankly I like his creator owned stuff more
I understand your complaint here. Believe me, I want Jones and Fell back to being consistent badly.
but I also am enjoying all this avatar work, and the only times that has been delayed is because of publishing errors

man what the fuck. i've been sitting here like a chump waiting for the last trade for a year for one issue?

My problem is "the writing is Ellis". Not, "the writing is good", it's "Ellis"
It reads like everything else of his I've read. Which, granted, isn't too much, but still.

John Cassady, on the other hand...
