So I made the mistake of telling my 6 year old son there is a Star Wars Pod Racer game. Went to download the demo and of course it doesn't work anymore (tried on Mac and PC).
The Mac version only works on Classic and the PC version needs a key from the CD (!)... anyone know where I can find a working version of this demo?
Game was rad. It was on N64 and Dreamcast as well, and I think they made a PS2 sequel later on.
You'd probably be best hunting down a used version for one of those platforms, as it'd probably be pretty cheap, and even if you got a different version of the demo or the full pc game, I'd imagine it'd be plagued with compatibility issues.
I actually hauled out my N64 again recently and played a few games of this with a friend, its an awesome game. The tinkering with racers was very cool back in the day.
I remember the first exclusive PC demo released on a PC Gamer UK demo disc was actually bugged in some way and allowed you to access a lot more of the game content than it should have done, including pod upgrades and characters.

THANKS!
I assume you've downloaded "racerdemo.exe" and have run into a "could not create key" error citing "StepLIB". This is actually inconsequential to getting the game to work, just go to "C:\program files\LucasArts\Racer Webdemo" and run "SWEP1RCR.EXE".

An addendum to this: I just tried playing the game on Windows XP Pro and it would "white screen" about 20 seconds into the race and completely lock up. To fix this, just right click and choose properties on swep1rcr.exe and go to the compatibility tab. Check the box and select Windows 95 mode. After doing this I was able to complete a race, so all should be well.
LucasArts issued a patch for this, but it only works on the full game. Hopefully using compatibility mode will be enough to fix the problem if you run into it.
Had this game on PC and N64 and it was fucking hot. I enjoyed it on the PC quite a bit more than the N64 though. The controller just kind of sucked for it. Arrow keys ftw.
Do you guys think that the 8 player IPX LAN functionality would work over Hamachi? I've got my copy all patched up and ready to go "online", but no one to test it with unfortunately.

This game was all sorts of badass. Racer Revenge, on the other hand, was utter crap.
Yeah, the N64 version rocked. It was especially cool using the cheat codes to alter the racer stats, so you could do races with super powered aircraft that could turn on a dime.
If you're looking to get it, I would recommend finding the N64 or Dreamcast version, as I imagine multiplayer on those would be preferable to on the PC.
I loved the hell out of this game. For some reason my copy regularily erased all my saves, and so I've only played the last track a few times, and didn't ever beat it.
They should make a sequel that isn't absolutely terrible. I can see it working on the Wii if they could get the controls tight.
I had the Mac version. Can't find the CD any more though, and there were a lot of bullshit things about it, like apparently Macs can't handle flame effects on four engines or other racers but the N64 can?
I loved it, but the lack of proper physics with the other racers meant it was pretty much just a race against the clock.
In my experience, the N64 version was nigh unplayable due to precision maneuvering required at certain points with that ol' shitty stick. I never could beat it.
