    And everything Sonic.

    Minus 3D Blast

Sonic 3D Blast is really the only Genesis game that I would rather play on a different system. On the Sonic Mega Collections, you can use the analog stick to move Sonic around, and it's so much easier than the D-pad.
    NHL 94/95.

Oh man NHL '94 was so good. Now I have the theme stuck in my head. I don't even like sports games.

CastleVania: Bloodlines is also awesome. One of the selectable characters is Eric Lecarde, who has a spear (the Alcarde Spear) instead of a whip, and he is a total badass. Kinda notable in that very little of the game actually takes place in CastleVania itself. I like it more than Super CastleVania IV, but that's just me.

The first X-Men game is pretty good (reset the system, haha), but Clone Wars is fucking awesome. You get to go Apeshit through a Sentinel manufacturing plant and run around as Beast if you want. That, and you can eventually play as Magneto.

I picked up Star Control for the Genesis yesterday, but I haven't fired it up yet. I heard it had some ships from Star Control I and II, but it was rushed. I'll try it out later today.

Bringing up Rings of Power makes me sad. I've been trying to find a copy of this game forever and so far it has eluded me.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot beggar prince even existed. That makes me want to buy a Genesis just for that.

Oh, and this sentence from a Gamingtrend.com review of Beggar Prince literally made me laugh and cry at the same time:

"Being an RPG, there's not really any replay value, so we can toss that right out the window..."

Herzog Zwei-Pretty much the original RTS game EVAR, lots of fun for two players.

Warsong-Awsome turn based strategy JRPG, and while it is insanely difficult at times. You will notice the AI is pathetic and easy to screw with.

    Starflight-Port of PC classic

Rings of power-As above poster said, huge game. I remember it being pretty hard too.

    Shining force series.

Why wouldn't it be? I'm a big fan of its art design and music. Plus, y'know, the game is fun. The last spirit you get (the earth one; isn't it named Bowie or something?) is probably the most lacking aspect of the game. Which isn't much at all. :P

The sequel they made for the Saturn was one of the reasons I wanted a Saturn so much. And yet I never was able to get one.

I had heard about Beggar Prince, but I didn't know it was actually on a cart, with a case and manual. $44 - $46 is pretty steep, but if the game is as good as I've heard it might be worth it.

    Flashback

Yes, a thousand times yes. Flashback and Out Of This World are brilliant games. I've still got an old PC copy of Flashback that I dig out once or twice a year and play.

It's been mentioned, but you can't go wrong with Phantasy Star 4. $90 USD at retail and worth every penny. It's aged pretty gracefully, a lot moreso than PS2 or 3.

Right, should have mentioned Zero Wing

Important note: it is only available in PAL and NTSC-J, but the European release is apparently not region protected and will work on American systems.

I picked up a complete copy of Hard Drivin' the other day for $2.50, and it's just as awesome as I remember.

    hard20drivin20gsvp8.gif

Pologonal cars and track pieces without any specialised hardware. Pretty impressive on the Genesis (considering the Japanese version was released in 1990), and even moreso when you consider there was a version in the works for the NES that ended up never seeing release.

It's fun to screw around in practice mode, and a good game to check out just to see what the Genesis is capable of, even without any additional hardware.

    Shit yeah.

Also if you're going to get a Micro Machines game, get Micro Machines '96. It's an enhanced version of MM2 with some new tracks and, more importantly, a fucking track editor. It kept me awake many nights.

Also, get Virtua Racing. Just check out those mad graphix!

    32xvirtuaracing.jpg
That's actually from the 32x version but from what I remember they look pretty much the same, the 32x version just had more content.

The Genesis version only had one car (the Formula Racer) and three tracks, and the colors were a little muted compared to the 32X version.

The nice thing about tracking down Virtua Racing for the Genesis is the cartridge is larger than regular Genesis carts, so it's easy to spot in a bin full of games.

You should try and track down Altered Beast because it's awesome, and also so you'll catch the reference when people post "Rise Fwum Your Gwave".

I haven't read the rest of this thread yet. I felt I could waste no time in telling you that the above quote is a fucking lie. Altered Beast is one of the worst games I've ever played in my life. Seriously, do yourself a favor, find a friend with a Wii who's willing to waste $8 (or whatever). Have him download it and witness the horror of a truly shitty game.

Seriously, I've had more fun Nairing my balls.

You'll thank me later. Or, if you've already got it, my condolences.

Altered Beast wasn't terrible. It's a good side scrolling beatemup. If you suck at beatemups I can see how you might get frustrated with it since there are a few cheap parts, but it's still a fun game. If you don't think that shooting fireballs or flying around as a dragon electrifying the shit out of stuff is fun then I don't know what is wrong with you but I'm sure it's hard to pronounce.

As far as I can tell, out of all of the systems that ended up getting Altered Beast ports, the Genesis one was the closest to the arcade version also.

I never played it as a kid, so maybe that's why I can't stand it. No nostalgia factor at all, just pure shit.

That's not to say I'm biased against old games or something. I'd never played Gunstar Heroes until last year, but that still kicked ass.

Altered Beast? Pft, more like Altered shit.

I would suggest all the sonic games, landstalker, phantasy star 4, flashback, and vectorman 1 and 2. Those are the games I enjoyed the most on the genesis and out of all the games for the system these probably held their entertainment and quality value the best.

Hi everyone, i'm new, so i apologise in advance for jumping in feet- first.

I second/ third/ eightieth Flashback, and Phantasy Star IV, but am i going to be burned at the stake for the mere suggestion that i liked Golden Axe III? Sure, the animation may not be quite as smooth as in II, but who couldn't like a panther/ human hybrid, whose nickname is "EVIL"? Ironically, for all of his ass- kickery, he had the lamest magic power- to control fog?!? Also, it had branching paths, and a desert stage that changes from day to night as you progress, which is legendary.... Where's the love? Well, i may be crazy, but it's still a fun game to me.

Also, Dartboy, this quote is the stuff dreams are made of:
"You know how in a lot of games enemies damage you if you touch them? Well in this, if you touch an enemy you KICK THEM IN THE FACE."
