S.T.A.L.K.E.R.-Because the search function isn't working
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, previously known as S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Oblivion Lost, is a first-person shooter computer game by Ukrainian developer GSC Game World, published in 2007.
It features an alternate reality theme, where a second nuclear disaster occurs at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the near future and causes strange changes in the area around it. The game has a non-linear storyline and features gameplay elements such as trading and two-way communication with NPCs. The game includes elements of role-playing and economic games.
The background idea and some terminology of the game ("The Zone", "Stalker") is borrowed from the popular science fiction book Roadside Picnic by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky and the 1979 film Stalker by Andrei Tarkovsky, loosely based on the book. Some of the music in the game such as that heard on the radio or sometimes performed by stalkers with guitars was recorded by the Ukrainian metal band FireLake.
In S.T.A.L.K.E.R., the player assumes the identity of a "Stalker", an illegal explorer/artifact scavenger in "The Zone". "The Zone" is the location of an alternate reality version of the Chernobyl Power Plant after its second (fictitious) explosion, which contaminated the surrounding area with radiation and caused strange otherworldly changes in local fauna, flora and even the laws of physics. "Stalker" in its original (film) context roughly meant "explorer" or "guide", as the stalker's goal was to bring (guide) people into the Zone.
I've been playing it for a while and like it. My main problem is that I am having problems installing the mod Oblivion Lost. Everytime I use the mod manager thing, the game immediately crashes at start up. How would I go about manually installing it?

I had the same problem. I got it working by disabling all but the latest version of the mod.
Weather mod, lighting mod, Sky's mod (I think thats what its called? It changes how the sky looks so its all pretty like).
I downloaded some day/night mod that made the lighting look realistic, like when its night, its godamn BLACK but for some reason now my game just crashes after about ten minutes of play.
Oblivion Lost, so far, is most excellent. I'm not too far in it yet, mind you, but it really seems to balance things out.
Please elaborate in great detail!
I'm very interested in specifically what this mod does as far as the "gameplay experience" is concerned. It's the kind of info you just don't get reading a what-this-mod-does spec sheet.

Stolls did an excellent Lets Play of S.t.a.l.k.e.r that I don't think anyone will top at this moment, but yeah its disappeared off the map.

Aha, I remember that. 'twas indeed awesome. It actually inspired me to finally install and start playin the game, but I've got the weirdest bug. Whenever i'm outside and there's a lightning storm, the game freezes up completely whenever lightning strikes. One minute i'll be walking along and then bam, everything grinds to a halt for a second or two and then the game starts up again. It's infuriating, as the game runs fine otherwise. (this is playing fully patched at 1280x1024, with dynamic lighting on, texture detail at max, vision distance at 50%, running on an AGP X1950pro 256mb, XP 3000+, 2gb ram). Naturally turning off dynamic lighting fixes it, but I don't really want to have to play the game like that.
tbh I dont know if its a bug or just poor engine optimisation. I've heard theories ranging from lack of video memory (I should really have 512mb, apparently) to some kind of ATI driver issue.
If there's any other fix that allows me to keep the dynamic lighting on i'd love to hear it. The atmosphere really takes a hit in DX8 mode.

Downloaded the latest graphics drivers Tom? Try seeing what happens if you revert and install new drivers.
It warms my little heart to see my LP linked to yet again. A shame imageshack seems to be steadily losing the pictures
Anyhow, I did play through the most recent Faiakes' build. It throws in a lot of cool stuff - artifacts as weapons, different types of zombies that get back up a couple times when 'killed', mutants called Burers which can fling objects like poltergeists and have a direct psychic attack, a few restored quests and such - but it breaks the game in several areas. Stalkers tend to run away more frequently, even when not in combat; the dream doesn't occur at X18, and thus the door doesn't unlock, trapping you in the room unless you block the door beforehand; a trio of Burers wait at the bottom of the X16 shaft and can almost instantly eviscerate you once you get in range, forcing you to use explosives (or be really patient with a rifle) to dislodge them.
Most of what I used for the LP was cosmetic or minor: better skies, the sleep system, Raw's text revamp, that kind of thing. Axe's compilation mod threw in the only repair mechanism that didn't cause periodic crashes, and it expanded trading to allow you to sell weapons, ammo and other things to other stalkers. I recently went back through with the Zone Reclamation Project - which I can't recommend enough, as it's basically an unofficial patch from the GSC Game World forums. Apart from better overall AI behavior and more user-friendly stash and quest systems, it fixes a lot of specific quests and events - the Pripyat stadium cutscene teleport, Fanatic's ambush at Cordon, even the ability to finish the Find Strelok quest.
Writing up a more formal review for another site at the moment. Once I'm done I'll give Oblivion Lost a go. The bottom line is for all its faults (and there are many), it's got that special something you just can't find anywhere else. If you can overlook its technical shortcomings and just let yourself go with the atmosphere, bouncing from epic gunfight to tense dungeon crawl to Russian mindfuck, you'll be back for seconds before long. :^:
I enjoyed STALKER, but I really wish they would have kept it as an open game world. That's how it originally developed and marketed. They never really came out and said that they cut that feature out and put it into levels instead.
I'm hoping the new STALKER game is more open, but probably not. It's a prequel, and you can join different factions and lead them to victory. It'll be released on STEAM, and apparently it's not very far off.

I'm so feeling the urge to go back and play through this again. Absolutely loved the atmosphere in the game, so stark and haunting.
I also wonder how long before Tube makes a "So S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a pretty fun game.." thread. I like reading those.

Yeah, running the latest 8.2 drivers currently. Been dipping in and out of the game for about the last three months and I updat my drivers pretty regularly, so the game's been through several of the last few catalyst updates. Always had the same problem. Though since catalyst's AGP support seems to have almost disappeared, I can well believe its a driver issue. Methinks stalker is a game I may have to shelve 'til I can muster up the funds for a new PC. A shame.
I really wanted to play through this game again last week when a thread popped up for it. I found out about Oblivion Lost and Float32, installed them and the game, I was really excited.
Then in the first 30 seconds I got a BSOD. I haven't seen a BSOD in a couple years. I started it up again and as soon as I used my binoculars, BSOD. So I've kind of given up. It's sad, I really wanted to try it again with improved graphics and all the crazy stuff OL does.

The game chugged along at like 3 FPS before I turned off all the shadows. Amazing how a game that doesn't look that great can be such a system hog.
Other than that, kickass game, immersive setting, and cool ballistics system. Didn't have that much trouble shooting people since Brothers in Arms
Did you install the patch? The unpatched version was unbearable for me.

Any mod suggestions?

Anyway, I've yet to purchase this. I love the concept and what I've seen of the gameplay, but the technical problems turn me off. Should I get it?
Sort by thread title, ascending order, posts from the last year. Not too hard to find most anything.
