I just picked up a PS3 and am considering picking up UT 3 or the Orange Box for online play. Is the stupidity voice chat on the Playstation network comparable to Xbox live? In other words, if I log into a 3D shooter am I going to be listening to a bunch of adolescents spewing out profanity and perjoratives with digitally altered voices? And if so, does the system have a global option to disable voice chat so I can play without having to squelch individual users/games?
I actually never tried disabling it, and about the people you'll meet, it depends mostly on the game's specific target (you're definately find more kids on FPSs than on racing games like forza 2 or GT5p for instance). even if the PS3 does have a slightly higher target than the 360 (age wise), i'm afraid you will find your occasional squeaker online.
Sorry mate
The lack of a microphone for every PSN user will probably cut down a bit on the squeaky pre-teen racial slur spewing morons you occasionally see on XBL. I imagine the ratio is the same, but not everyone has a mic. Then again, if their parents bought them a PS3, they can probably get their parents to buy them a Bluetooth headset, so it's a bit of a wash
The cockblockery on Resistance is quite a bit less than the fuckery on Halo 3, in my experience. The lack of mic included with the system was a brilliant move.
Couple of days ago I played a CoD4 match where our team was actually congratulating each other on kills and whatforth. It was like I was in a alternate fucking dimension.
I don't know anything about the PSN voice chat, but two guys I used to work with were playing together over PSN and they thought the PSN voice chat was so terrible that they actually turned on their 360s just to talk to eachother.

In my experiance they were equally as bad. Which is to say, if you're really meeting that many 'idiots', you probably need to stop being so sensitive and grow a thicker skin.

Always funny to see that when someone complains about rudeness online, someone always comes and tells him it's his fault

I'm just saying, I'll average maybe an idiot or two during a long evening worth of online play. If that's so awfully unbearable, maybe online gaming just isn't for him?

It depends on what you're playing. Some FPSs have full rooms of squeaking fools, world of warcraft can be even worse (but luckily there is no voice there, unless you're on ventrilo).
But definately online gaming should be for everyone that knows the meaning of respect (and self respect). It's the rude asses that should be ostracized.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
Much as I'm enjoying my PS3 MORE online I'd have to agree the 360 has the edge on voice chat. More options to mute and the PS3 has a weird problem (Maybe it's my headset but I've heard other people complain too) that makes people's voices come through sounding like Charlie Brown's teacher.
But it's functional, and Warhawk which I tend to play most online nowadays is due to be updated with a patch to support muting and a few other bits and bobs.

the new update for warhawk is really exciting, if nothing else because we'll get to see how games will integrate into PSN/Home.
I've been playing The Orange Box online with my PS3 for about 2 months now and I have run into maybe...4 or 5 people who have used a mic in some way.
99% of those people say "Mic check" or "Anybody got a mic?" and then never speak again because they are the only ones who can speak.
PSN voice chat will improve and be pretty awesome by fall due to SOCOM being released. Anyone who plays it will need a mic of some sort to be able to play effectively. I assume Sony will have the mic problems fixed by then and hopefully packages a low-quality mic with a game in the near future.

Yes it does. Its coming in the next patch they said. (Which is only a week or two away)
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....

I hope CoD4 gets a similar update soon.
Curse my location, everytime I log on everyone on my friend's list is offline! Except Italax, who's playing Devil May Cry 4. Even on Valentine's Day.
I was tempted to send a PSN message: "Roses are red, blood is too, you may be alone, but Dante loves you"
Also (on topic), quality of chatter differs depending on which headset you have but not by much really.
