So I picked up an open boxed 360 for $30 from an un-named retailer today and I'm wondering.

If it RROD's how would the warranty work? Failing that, how much does warranty repair cost? I figure at $30 even if I have to pay to get it fixed it's no big deal plus I would get my warranty renewed.

A 360 for $30? What, did the "open box" fall off the back of a truck?

If you got a retail receipt, indicating a new-unit sale, then you'd have the regular warranty. That's the way "open box" stuff works at big-box stores. I don't think you're talking about that sort of open box, though. I think out-of-warranty MS repairs are generally around $100, but I could be wrong.

Good start to the day. Pity it's going to be the worst one of your life. The light is now on.

Sort of. My receipt doesn't say XBox 360. It was sold as a store fixture.

then thats part of the price you pay I guess.

Or else go back and get some better sort of proof of purchase you could show Microsoft to indicate a warranty.

What about the 'ol "It was a gift." fallback.

You can try. What's the manufacture date on the console?

It's recent. It has a HDMI port on it and it had the sticker for the two free games.

it's a gift wouldnt really work with most people I'd guess. Not in a world with gift receipts and such.

And ebay - purchase a broken unit on there and claim "gift" ??? They wouldnt want people doing that.

I think in this case the manufacture date would imply the warranty is still effective. Try to register it on the xbox website. It should then show you a warranty status.

If it's the Zephyr model with HDMI, it probably won't RRoD anyway, but yeah, register it at that site and see if it works.

    Well,

    Device Information
    Device: Xbox360 Hardware
    Serial Number: 609367473###
    Warranty Status: In Warranty
    Repair Status: No pending repair

Looks good. Says warranty expires 11/18/08, so that's when the original purchase date must have been.

In case of RRoD, you have 3 year warranty for that if it ever happens.

    Well, that's a sweet deal maximumzero. Newish-model 360 + warranty for $30. And it was legal! :P

Oh, and if you're curious about how new a model it is, look at the lot number, team code, and power supply wattage rating. Higher lot (740+), team FDOU, and 175W are the signs of a Falcon model (new lower-power CPU).

Doesn't sound too legal, but I am extremely jealous. Let us know if you find any other $30 current gen consoles. :P

Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
