LOST - Via Domus Thread - Now With More Others

edited March 2008 in Games and Technology
Based on the television series, Lost Via Domus is a third person action survival adventure puzzle game that takes place concurrently with the first two seasons. You play a new character who gets amnesia in the crash and so he is having flashbacks, like in the show, and remembering his past as you learn about it. There are two trailers out and the latest one makes it look pretty sweet. Here are some websites about it.

Some of the actors lent their voices for it, some didn't.

Here are some screenshots. It comes out on February 26th for PC, PS3, X-Box 360.

Hey a computer with those numbers on it, just like in Episode Two, must be a reference.

Oh God, Steven Jay Blum is voicing Jack? It just sounds so awkward coming out of Jack's face. It doesn't really work for me.

Still, the game looks interesting. I'm hoping it's not just an attempt to cash in on the series and instead they put some effort into it. I'll be waiting for reviews before I pick up a game based on a television series.

I made a thread about this like a month ago and got some pretty negative reactions. And yeah, it doesn't look that great.

But still, more backstory for Lost is fine by me, even if it's wrapped in a mediocre game.

This better have some epic Jackfaces in it.

In fact, it better have a title screen just like Mario 64's, except you get to manipulate Jack's face.

They could just do this and make it the whole game.

    I'd buy it.
    I'd buy it twice.

Drag his jaw to the bottom of the screen, let go and watch his elastic face reform itself. For added fun, throw in various Jack quotes whenever this feature is used.

"TELL ME WHERE MY FRIENDS ARE!!"

"Why do you find it so easy?!"

"If we can't live together, we're gonna die alone."

I can't believe they couldn't get the same people to do the voices.

I mean shesh Lost is supposed to be some megahuge show and they can't even take the time out of their busy schedule of not filming new episodes to do some voice work?

I really don't like Steven Jay Blum voicing Jack. Blum is all that cigarette gruff voice, and his voice just doesn't fit with Jack.

And Unbreakable, the game takes place in the first two seasons of LOST, so yes, Charlie should be in it.

I just started watching it in...September, I believe? Since then I've gotten four people into it. It really is a great show, and it gives me faith that people still like good television.

Well, this brings me on nicely to my question.

As someone who is only 13 episodes in to Season 2 (I'm watching when I can!), up to what season of the show is the game based on?

By which I mean will it likely spoil plot points of the show if I pick it up on release date? Should I wait till I'm completely up to date?

It's just...how can you add anything significant to a story if it takes place on the island in seasons one and two? We already know the major plotlines and how they resolved themselves up to this point in Seasoin 4 (which has been great, btw) so it's not like there's going to be anything huge revealed.

Anyway...this is going to be just an ordinary adventure game wrapped in a Lost shell.

Since the first screenshot in the OP is from a location only seen in season 3 I think we can assume that locations and people from season 3 will be in the game even if it's only set in the time frame of the first two seasons.

I've constantly made the comment that there's been more revealed in each individual episode this season than in 8 or 9 episodes from prior seasons...hell, each one could practically be a season-ender, with the way they've been going.

They're not screwing around and getting right to the meat, which is GREAT. This foot-dragging, time-wasting which epitomized a lot of S2 and part one of S3 has been largely eliminated, and if they keep it up, I'll be happy.

That being said, my hopes are...middling to low that Via Domus will actually be GOOD, but I'm holding out hopes anyway. The web campaigns have been packed with tons of awesome info not otherwise available on the show, so I'd like to think that the game has a chance of pulling off the same thing.

Plus, to address an earlier concern, the show is NOTORIOUS for turning earlier locations into places of UNREVELATIONS! In other words, despite being S1 and S2-set, there is plenty of potential for revelatory stuff.

this game could also go the way of Nikki and Paulo, since this guy is just being shoehorned into the already established show.

I do enjoy that the show runners know how many episodes they have left to write, so there is no more of this "gotta fill 22 episodes a season, with all these reruns between".

my big concern right now with the show, besides pigeonholing itself into not having a satisfying ending (I mean, they're probably just all gonna die and have shit lives once they get off the island, and the ones who stay behind could become the new Others?), is that the writer's strike is forcing the show runners to rush 8 episodes of story into 5 episodes. I don't like shows that are forced to rush. Heroes was an abomination of a show in season 2, but it got a bit better near the end, only for them to prematurely abort certain storylines and rush things. Same with Pushing Daisies. They seemed to rush the last two episodes, in plot movement, and in the big reveal each week. But this isn't a tv thread, so I'll stop yammering.

So if you don't want anything spoiled for you, Mr_Grinch, then I would wait till you're done season 3. Also, for those wondering how it could really bring anything new to the table:
It deals with the smoke monster in a big way (something about using a control panel in some hatch to release it), and you also explore what was 'sealed off' behind that concrete wall in the hatch.

Is one of these groups ''The Maxwell Group,'' a mysterious outfit introduced via the ''Find 815'' alternate reality game?

LINDELOF: We cannot say that any of that stuff in ''Find 815'' is in canon. The Maxwell Group is something that Hoodlum came up with. Last fall, we presented them with the idea that, at the beginning of the second episode, a salvage ship was going to find wreckage of Oceanic 815. From there, they came up with a story — and backstory — that led up to that event. [Some background: prior to the strike, the producers and ABC's marketing team hired a company in Australia called Hoodlum to execute ''Find 815.'']

CUSE: We provided the creative framework but didn't oversee the execution.

LINDELOF: I'll sign off on this idea: the Christiane 1, which in the show was responsible for finding Oceanic 815, was in fact looking for the Black Rock. We established that in the show — but the people who owned the ship may have been up to a little bit more than just looking for the Black Rock.

So what's official and what's not? What's ''canon?''

CUSE: The mobisodes are in canon. The Orchid video is in canon. The videogame is not in canon. It's unfair for the audience to go to ancillary sources in order to really understand the show. Even the things like the mobisodes, which are in canon, aren't essential to your understanding of the show. These things are just added bonuses.
So, the game isn't in canon. Lovely.

Not in the sense of the way things unfold or involve the character you play, no. But the explanations to things only ever really touched on the tv series (ie
What's behind the sealed off section in the hatch
) have been written by the writers themselves.
