Don't listen to LewieP. Play the first Splinter Cell before playing Chaos Theory. You only really need to play Pandora Tomorrow if you're interested in the story of Sam Fisher. PT was good to play when it was fresh and everybody was playing the multiplayer. Splinter Cell 1 is still a very solid game and PT is a continuation of it... Chaos Theory is amazing... play them both. 8-)

I only know PC games so I'll comment on the ones I'm aware of.
Homeworld 1/Cataclysm/2 people say Homeworld 1 is really great Fallout 1/2/Tactics obviously need to get to the RPGs at some point; Tactics only if you love squad turn-based
KOTOR /2 second game is basically the same as the first
Medieval: Total War + exp /2 the short campaign was super fun and relatively quick; done in a weekend
Chronicles of Riddick also short and pretty different from most shooters; I'd definitely place this before Prey
No One Lives Forever 2 don't bother; didn't thrill me and the midgame was super boring
Quake IV I actually prefer Doom3; only the last few levels of this game were fun
Neverwinter Nights /2 don't waste your time on the original NWN1 campaign; if you have Hordes of the Underdark, play that! Company of Heroes /OF the original campaign is awesome; could pass on the expansion campaigns unless you get hooked STALKER I'm biased because I love this game, but I'd put it right behind Deus Ex and System Shock 2!!
RESULTS
Diablo I, II + exp drop the first one
Warcraft III + exp I stopped after the original campaigns, haven't made it to the expansion yet
Half Life 2 + exps OK
Doom 3 OK
Crysis OK
Call of Duty 1, 2, 4 drop the first one, it's all the same style
Max Payne 2 super short, might as well leave it
F.E.A.R. OK
Far Cry maybe drop this one, got really boring and frustrating toward the end; or get a quicksave mod
Prey drop; haven't played but it'd be my first choice to kick
Jedi Knight II JK2 and JA have their own fans, just pick one
System Shock 2 OK
KotoR OK
Deus Ex OK
Bioshock OK
Unreal drop; I don't remember it but it's probably long and boring
Naw, Diablo II is only good if you played it when it was fresh or you have a small group of friends who want to go back in time... Playing it to just say you beat it is kind of dumb, unless you're into the story!
Ya, playing fun games because 'they're ugly' by todays standards is stupid. Who'd want to have fun?
I don't really care about graphics. Hell, I've had a Nethack binge last year for three months of fervent ASCII dungeoning. My point is that you, at some point, start fighting recolors of monsters with higher stats for recolors of items with higher stats. It's perfect for the OCD in me, but there really isn't much point to that drop-grinding. I cannot say that it isn't fun because it is. It's like with WoW, though I haven't played it (and God forbid I ever touch it).
