PAXsassins '06 - Double Dragon

edited September 2006 in PAX Archive
PreReg for the expo itself is open, so I think it's about time to start laying the foundations for this year's PAXsassins game. The game did go off last year, but I ran into a few issues, namely:

-Watchless players/counterkilling
-People not being there all three days
-InstaGib (getting fragged as soon as the doors opened in the initial chaotic rush)
-Dependence upon players to report their kills
-General sense of chaos
-Dropouts and last-minute additions

These problems are, for the most part, easily solved.

1. Counterkilling
Counterkilling was a huge conflict-ridden clusterfuck last year. It led to broken rings, watchless players and unnecessary stress for all parties. Because of all the trouble it caused at '05, I'm dropping the counterkill rule for this year's Ring Game (ring game? Huh? Read on). Basically, your hunter gets their hands on your watch, you're good and fucked, end of story.

2. People not there all three days
This was probably second on the list of things that sucked. To participate in this year's Ring Game, you'll have to be preregged for all three days, and will have to be there for all three.

3. InstaGib
We lost three participants right in the door, in the opening rush, which had to suck for them. Also, there being a difference in the door-open time for prereggers and nons threw a bit of a wrench into the works. The game will start each day one hour after doors open. Since I don't think there was one PAXsassin last year who bought their ticket at the door, this shouldn't pose too much of a problem.

4. Dependence upon players to report their kills
This year, I'm going to work on a better reporting system for the ring game (I'm getting to it! I swear!). If I get things arranged the way I want to, we'll have an updated website and a dropbox at the admin table or coat/goat/scrote check.

5. General sense of chaos
Hopefully all the above changes will help to remedy this.

6. Dropouts and last-minute additions
I started registration too early last year, so plans changed as they always do. This year, registration for the game will take place over a two month stretch, and end a month before PAX. No exceptions.

The rulebook for this year is posted HERE.

Sounds good. I remember the incredibly dull stand-off I had with my target... neither of us really trying very hard because it was five minutes into PAX, and I didn't want my watch ripped off as a counterkill.

    Just not very fun.

These rules look to be much better. So I take it that the FFA can be for people who aren't staying for all three days, then?

Yeah, that kind of sucked. I've got a message in to Khoo about using a corner of the registration desk for management of target assignment.

I was considering a website with a database for getting your next target (codes on the back of watches), but if I can't pull that together we can go with a book at the desk. We'll see how it shapes up over the next... uh.. seven months or so.

Edit: If anybody knows their way around a database-driven website, any help you can offer would be much appreciated. I could probably figure it out with enough struggling and curses, but would much prefer not starting from scratch.

hey, i know i didn't get last place last year, i lasted 7 minutes. but yeah, i will probably play both games. and i like the new rule changes. its no longer just about being stealthy. now you have to be quick, which will probably end the game quicker.

I know my way around a database driven website. I was going to startup my own ring-game, and I was pointed here. Let me know what rules you want to institute and I'll throw something together for you.

I have some ideas about how to handle kill reporting. This will be my first time at PAX, but if we do it right, maybe we can get a screen somewhere that shows the current standing of the ring, with kills being shown in realtime and participants being revealed as they die.

    "His name is Robert Paulsen"

Let me know if you're interested in the help. PM me and we can discuss details offline.

but the how would one "assassinate" one's target?

I'll love to just be able to play little laser tag, but....
Can I bring my nerf gun/lightsaber/other weird thing?
Don't bring anything that would annoy another attendee or set us up for a crazy lawsuit. PAX is not an event run by some giant corporate entity; it's a big party we throw for the gaming community in general and PA readers in particular. Have fun, but be cool.

Although, personally, saddly think that perhaps the rule may also been put in place to discourage the underrated act of dressing up in cool costumes. :P
Hey, Well made costumes are cool, don't care what anyone else says. lol

Not really, there was cosplay at '04 & '05. I'm sure there will be more at '06. The "rule" is really only there to make everyone know that there is no official nerf gun event at PAX. It's more of a liability thing for us.

I'm all about the cosplay, really. Nekomimi cosplay girls, For The Yum. I'll be the one cosplaying as an Enforcer.

The variant They used in last years game, that appears to have been carried over is by snatching a Paper watch from the Targets wrist.

I Wasn’t there last year, I can only go by what I read so don’t take that as gospel

Yeah, we use paper watches. Gold for the ring game, red for the open game.

I'm currently surfing various trophy sites that offer custom ribbons and trophies. I've found a place that will make me 100 silver-on-black "pwnt" ribbons and four trophies (three small for each day of the pickup game, 1 large for the winner of the ring game), and will post pics of those as soon as I receive them.

I can't wait for this again! Last year's PAXsassins left me paranoid as hell. As soon as my friends convinced me that my watch wasn't going to be taken on the first day, yoink, I got snatched.

Okay, I've unilaterally decided to drop the FFA game entirely, because the idea is dumb.

Also, a date change: Registration will not end until four days before PAX, instead of the one-month spread I had before.

    this sounds so awsome!

i have one question though, what about people without wirless capabilities and no byoc spot, how will they get their dossiers and such. the most i have is a psp, so i could look at the dossiers, but not print them, which it says i have to do. not to mention 5 friends of mine which have nothing to even go online with. we do have access to a pc at someones house, so we can print our watches, just not print the dossiers during the game.
