Dell Latitude CD-Rom Bay

So, while perusing the local Mayo Clinic Classifieds, I found a gentleman who wanted to sell an older Dell Latitude laptop (400mhZ, 64 megs of ram---etc) on which I intended to install my older games on (LucasArts, Tex Murphy, and X-Com). However, for whatever reasons, this gentleman hasn't yet provided me with the model number - nor does the laptop include a cd-rom bay.

So, my question to you is; can any model latitude cd-rom bay fit into any model Dell Latitude Laptop? Or do I need to match the model number correctly.

The cost for the laptop is only $45.00 so this isn't a major purchase in the slightest.

I believe you have to match the series of Latitude. For example, any D series notebook (D800, D840, etc) would use the same drive. I'm a little fuzzy on those much older ones, but I believe the bay sizes were the same.

I don't believe it - I'm on my THIRD PS3, and my FIRST XBOX360. What the heck?

Now I have been told by the seller that it is a Dell PPX and that it can use the c600 line of CD-Rom bays, can anyone confirm this? I did a quick google of the Dell PPX brand and replacement bays for that PPX line are upwards of $90.00

For that price you might as well get an external CDROM drive.

I'm thinking this, or I may just eBay an older Thinkpad or something.

Or, is it even possibly to install a game from a desktop running XP to a laptop running Win98 via a USB cord?

Yeah I suppose so. You can definitely do it if you network the 2 computers via an Ethernet cable. I've never tried Daisy Chaining a win98 machine though.

I'd do this via network share - just plug it into your router at home. You might be able to get/make a crossover cable to connect the two systems if you don't have a router, but getting them to connect might be troublesome.

One thing to be prepared for with an older notebook is that the battery is probably shot at this point, and it may have other oddities with the backlight and keyboard. Also, why are you getting a notebook to play those at all? Most of the LucasArts games will run using SCUMM, and I think 400 MHz is still too fast for X-COM without some CPU throttling. They're all playable on the desktop with a few minutes of Googling.
