I'm a first year college student and I'm trying to find a decent summer job. One of my friends has a summer internship lined up at a company, and said the company is looking for people to fill a "student aide position". He gave me the email address of the woman in charge of hiring student aides.
I've never had to send an email for anything like this before. Would the below format be ok?
Dear Hiring Person,
I am a first year college student looking for summer employment. My friend xxxxxxxxxxx mentioned you are looking to fill a student aide position for the summer. I am interested in this job, could you give me some more details about the position?
Like JSmith@yahoo.com or JohnSmith@yahoo.com is ok. If you have to make up an account for this then do so and make it your apply/job account.
Yeah, this is really important. Its super easy to sign up for a new account, and it looks way better to have just your name as a personal email account than some stupid saying or joke.
gmail looks nice and professional as an email addy. Did your friend give you the name of the person who is doing hiring?
Don't call her "hiring person"
Throw in another sentence along the lines of "This position interests me because.... but I would like more details on it. You can reach me at xxx-xxxx or xxx-xxxx at your convenience.
Otherwise, you could use your school address -- those are nice and legit, and usually inoffensive. Also, it's really nice that, at least at my school, you can set it to forward to another address so you don't have to check multiple.
That letter looks good. If you know anything about the job, maybe mention your qualifications, if any, or interest, if it's specific. If not, what you have should work great, though I always like to introduce myself at the beginning of the letter: "Hello, my name is Jane Doe. I'm a first year..."
Quick grammer thing: "I am interested in this job, could you give me some more details about the position?" <- Change the comma to a semicolon. Or, say instead, "I am interested in this job and was wondering if you could give me some details about the position." YMMV but I find something like that to be a bit more streamlined and situation-appropriate.
