Hey guys, I'm looking for some advice as to what to do to with my hair. I look and feel like a dork and I'd like to change it.
The new style must not:
-Have any colouring.
-Be long enough so that it touches my collar
Those are the school rules.
Other notes:
-I'm willing to grow it further, so feel free to make suggestions assuming it is longer. However I want to do something
now, at least as a place holder between now and when it's longer.
-Money shouldn't be a problem.
-Try stay below ten minutes maintenance in the morning, but I'm flexible in that regard.
-These pictures were taken today.
-Your help is truly appreciated.
THANKS FOR THE HELP GUYS - PIC REMOVED FOR PRIVACY REASONS
Again, thanks for your time.

It's cheap, and it takes less than ten minutes every morning to maintain.
That said, I'm satisfied with short hair (not like in the picture.)
Mooshoepork can you be more specific as to what I'd do? Step by step? I'm a newbie at this. You can tell I'm not a fashion guru from the pictures alone.

edit: sorry if I am a little vague, but you will see when you put it in. You really just put it in your hand, run it through your hair, and mess it up a bit. It gives you some texture and volume.
i've used this stuff for years, and it's great. just make sure your hair is dry when you apply it - it'll run like a melted candle with water. but it gives you heeeeaps of volume without a glossy, shiny look or any sticky clumps.
you'll probably want your hair a bit shorter for best results. i'd ask for a number 4 on the sides, with an 8 (some places do eight - if not, just say 'pretty short, but long enough to play around with some product') on top. it's fantastic stuff for really malleable hair. feel like a faux-hawk? too easy. swept fringe? 80's front heavy bouff? good old 'just woke up' mess? fudge is the stuff.
And yes, find me a picture! It's sort of hard to imagine descriptions for me.
Edit: To the poster above - I missed your post!
Right now I'm getting a number 4, with a 'broken front' and a 'tapered' behind. Do you have a picture of what you're describing? It sounds pretty short.
i used to ask for a scruff cut, i don't know if that's a regularly used expression. fudge is pretty easy stuff, anything that's not too long will work, but as soon as it grows out you start needing far too much and it gets a bit wild and unmanageable. at the moment you look good to go but it's nice to get a cut that will work for a while to come
I sorta like the second one. Wouldn't a longer version of that look good? A bit like in my pic. Would that style be very realistic to obtain?
The first one looks good too. Probably easier to get.

Try a part; pick a side. Try a subtle part, where you keep your current style mostly intact (combing it all forward) but the part gives it a little definition. Or try the full-on part where you brush each half away from each other. The subtle part will probably look edgier.
Also, try styling your hair with your fingers, rather than a comb. You get less definition but for men's hair that's often a good thing. Play around with your hair while it's wet, and settle on a style you like. Then see what happens when your hair dries. if it gets ugly, you need product. And start with a little, not a lot -- the shiny spiky look is, in my opinion, not that different in looks from what you're doing now.
if you can. Seems like Fudge should do it, along with the proper haircut. I'd recommend against having bangs, they look good on very few men. And don't do the little flip-up...it's kinda dorky (sorry if there are any flippers reading this). Just go generally messy all over. Heaps more attractive to us female types, I'd say.
Also, if you're going to have short hair, keep the bit above your ears trimmed. The shaggy bit there contrasts strangely with the rest of your hair.
What I usually do is hop out of the shower and dry my hair a bit with a towel than use a bit of the EFG to start styling and than usually mess my hair up a bit with the towel (And drying it more) and than continue styling (Just using my fingers). My hair is kind of thin and on the shorter/normal side and I have a sort of general shape I go for, but I just kind of use product with my fingers and use the towel till I'm happy.. it can take 2 minutes to 15 but usually nowhere near that long, usually like 5.
As for the shape/style, well, I don't know if they have this at hairdressers elsewhere but over here a lot of them have these things at the front that have a ton of styles (Photos of models with said style, just the head not full body shops) and see if there's anything you like and than try it out at home. Edit: Just realised you are in Australia. Be kind of conservative too, don't try and do some crazy massive spike thing, possibly just mess/rough it up a bit (So it's not so straight), make the front part kind of go to the side or something..
If you are going to go this way, or for general using a product to do something, I'd say your hair is a bit too long, especially around your ears and the your fringe. Edit: Actually, it might be good to go to the hairdressers and get it cut but make sure to mention that this is your first time thinking of styling it and they'll offer help and depending upon where you go, they'll style it for you after cutting it making suggestions, etc. I kind of remember doing this, I went for a haircut but than mentioned I want to style it so the lady (Well, some girl in her 20s) offered suggestions and what not. One thing, ask them about "layering" your hair so instead of just being flat, it's kind of, well, layered - they should be able to explain it better and I'd say layering is very important in regards to styling your hair.
And if you want, you can call up, make an appointment so they're expecting you, etc and it's sort of a more "real" thing than just wandering off the side of the street. So yeah, I'd recommend actually talking to a hairdresser for your first time, they can be insanely helpful.
Edit: Insanely long post for freaking hair, but I swear I'm not gay, I'm just vain and have done this for years. I don't know how well your fashion is or what you wear, but that's another area you might want to also look at after figuring out something with your hair.
Use Crew Classic Wax
I like it because you can use it on dry or damp hair, and it never gets really stiff. You can't spike your hair with it, but it'll do perfectly well at slightly curling edges and adding volume.
or maybe even:
???
I actually googled 'emo hair' to find the above (except for mr quiffy), and while I think most will agree the more extreme emo-hair cuts are fucking naff, the more subtle, non-coloured, non-straightened, non-ridiculous takes on a fringe and longish bits looks pretty darn cute on a lad.
EDIT: Also, shiny hair looks bad. It's kinda out of fashion unless you own a pizza or kebab store. Go for products that give your hair a matte-look.
