why would we be excited about a project that's already cancelled? i'm not sure its goldeneye but i don't think what they says points to information about a failed goldeneye

Goldeneye was a pretty good game but in my opinion, Perfect Dark blew it out of the water in every possible way

Why didn't they remake that instead

Wasn't PD (the original) effectively GE2 but with new IP?

Anyway, GE64 was amazing, I spent hundreds of hours on that fucking game - long painful memories of sitting in Caverns battling my room-mate with proxies for hours on end. The problem was that in our house there were five of us, two of us were evenly matched but the other three were not as good so they didn't like playing with us - so that meant endless duels.

I'll wait to see the full article, but if this was just a big thing to tease a story of Goldeneye being cancelled, I'm taking the effort to send them a nasty email... there's teasing a game to promote your magazine, and there's just being a bunch of dicks to grab some cash

I stand by what I said when the leaker from Rare posted this a month or two ago; Goldeneye was a great game, and I'm glad that I still have my copy of it, but Rare were idiots to start work on an update project without sorting through the legal haze first.

This is fucking ridiculous. The mag is acting as though they are some kind of crusaders for good. Why is would MS or Nintendo care about some shitty magazine's opinion on their business decisions?

Honestly, Goldeneye doesn't hold up. I went back and tried to play it again a couple weeks ago, and I've been...spoiled by the likes of everything else. Yeah it has nostalgia and yeah it's got keyboard punching, but christ, it just isn't that fun anymore.

So please, Rare, just let it die. I know you can come up with something better. I know it.

Oh jesus christ we've had enough of April Fool's. And why the fuck would they do it in the April issue when we all know the April issue comes out in February. Do it in the June issue when we're already even more sick of it and it actually lands in April.

looks like the guy with that screen a while back wasn't lying. It'll be nice to experience Goldeneye in 60FPS with some better graphics, but I think Timesplitters 2/3 is the better multiplayer game and those run in 60FPS too.

So, if Perfect Dark 0 was generally considered "meh," what's so different about Goldeneye that will make an 11 year old game any better? it was great for multiplayer because there *weren't* other FPS multiplayer games on a console, and you could play it after untangling the controllers instead of setting up a LAN.

I was never that impressed with the game back then; most people seemed wowed by the idea of proximity mines, something that has (rightly so) not carried over into modern games due to how unbalanced they are. Which is actually true for most of GoldenEye -- the weapons were poorly balanced so there's the group who kicked ass and loved it, and those who got their asses kicked and thought "what's the big deal?" Maybe I was an ass-kickee, but like TelMarine says, Timesplitters 2/3 are a lot more fun, yet no one really buys them.

It doesn't help that of all the people who played and laud Goldeneye, only a small fraction have actually played the single player game.

I'm not sure whats the bigger letdown. This alleged Goldeneye remake, or Perfect Dark Zero.

Goldeneye was awesome when it was released, and then Perfect Dark came out. To me Perfect Dark is still the best FPS I have ever played. It took the multiplayer fun from Goldeneye, and then added a pretty awesome single-player game.

However, when talking about multiplayer hours logged on the N64, it's a huge tossup between PD and Smash Bros.

Well it seems their source is the same guy who posted here. Article says:
The rumour started on the Penny Arcade forums back in December, where a user by the name of 'Oddjaw2' spilled the (Sean) beans about the aborted project. As Oddjaw tells it, Rare set to work on a 360 Goldeneye Port around the time Activision picked up the Bond license, rebuilding and modifying the original code to run on Xbox and updating the game's graphics for high-definition TVs. Naturally, Oddjaw was soundly thrashed by every hyperactive amateur critic in the thread, and was treated to insults from the community, even after going out on a very precarious limb and posting a legitimate screen from the game. 'Experts' crept out of the woodwork to debunk the image, taking to the internet to find the supposed ROM hack the grab came from, and 'proving' how the frame counter was a photoshopped After-effect. But they were wrong.

And then it goes on. No info we've not seen before, though, just repeats stuff Oddjaw and others have said.
If NeoGaf article thread is to be believed, articles source is actually Oddjaw2's Penny-Arcade thread.

It can't be just the thread as they have an absolute shit-ton of new screens in high res. They might've tracked Oddjaw down, though.

You're completely missing the point. The problem was that Microsoft and Nintendo wouldn't make a suitable bargain with each other. So, the game was canned. This shit had nothing to do with the Bond license.

This story stank when it first came out and stinks even worse with repeating. Nintendo has no legal recourse to stop the game, but did somehow anyways? Ok...

I guess Nintendo owns the game since they published it, and they own the code in the game or something.
I heard more specifics of it years back on some nerdy rare forum. I forget the specifics, but they do have legal rights of some variety over the game.

But they made Perfect Dark to basically put out a sequel after losing the bond license. I'd love to see PD on 360 about as much as I'd love to see Goldeneye.

Haha, I remember that thread. People were totally justified in being skeptical of something like this coming from an unknown person on the forum though.

Nice that it's getting a graphical update, but this is really not that big of a deal. They might as well lock up an exclusive remake of Virtua Racing while they're at it.
