Now don't get me wrong, I love free for alls... on party nights.
So just look at this tourney as one big party night.
Its like, all I'm really doing is trying to make sure you have fun with PA people with Smash, rather than jumping on the forums, and hoping someone else is online and wants to play as well.
Tournaments are for competition. If you don't think that's fun, then don't play in a tournament. You should have no problems finding people online who want to play all day every day for a long time.
Wait wait wait: with the exception of cooperative modes, multiplayer gaming is essentially defined by competition. If you don't find competition fun, I doubt you'll be playing Brawl at all. I don't see how tournaments modify that fact. The game is called BRAWL. Regardless of the gaming context, it's about throwing combatants into an arena and having them destroy each other. When is that not a competitive experience?

Dude, people find different things appealing about Smash. Some people like winning. Some people like having fun with random chaos. Neither is wrong. There are room for both types of tournaments.
And for the record, I'm not highly competitive yet I absolutely adore Smash.

Unless I'm reading this wrong, he's insisting Smash always has to be about serious competition rather than just screwing around and having fun.
Or maybe my brain is addled by too many silly competitive vs. casual arguments.

I think it was meant as more of a defensive arguement against Zek.
Zek saying that only competitive players should be playing tournaments, and Sineal simply saying Smash brothers is a competitive game, and just because you buy Smash bros. doesn't mean you have to play in tournies.
He's not saying that, but he's being semantic and defining competition. Which is also retarded.
There are going to be like, 3 tournaments now. It's becoming a little confusing and clusterfucky with all the arguments. I would suggest you don't try to take any middleroads with the rules. Just set the stock/time and party on if you're going to do a wild fun FFA, otherwise, you get the drift. If people don't want that, they won't sign up. There will be more "serious" tournaments for them.
I doubt getting enough people to play is going to be a problem with the new Smash Brothers.
This way people can't escape, and there won't be any randomness to mess things up, as everything should end the same.
This seriously did not deserve to be BOTP'd.
That is seriously the best custom stage I've seen thus far. Clearly demonstrates a strong knowledge of the game's physics system and excellent innate timing skills.
It's like the creation of a murderous Rube Goldberg.
I have to chime in and say that this is made of win and awesome. I want MORE!
Edit: Also, I suggest that we replace the Assist Trophy link in the first post with this one:
It's more complete (showing the Advance Wars troops, Samurai Goroh, Lyn and Barbara the Bat), and generally gives a more clear indication of what the assist trophies do - the guy who made the video kindly used Tingle multiple times to show a few different effects.
What is the trophy after Knuckle Joe? It looks like a red ball zooming around and shooting rockets and green lasers. And the pink and orange duo zipping across the screen after the person from Sin and Punishment? And the last one that shoots out walls of yellow energy?
NITPICK ACTIVATE
I'm pretty sure everyone enjoys winning, at least to an extent. I play 'for fun' probably 99% of the time that I'm playing, but I still generally enjoy myself more when I'm kicking ass. I think it's misleading to say that you either like to win or you like chaos, like the people that don't just sit there and go 'HURF DURF' with a controller in their hands to have fun.
NITPICK DEACTIVATE
All I'm saying is that since it is a tournament, most people are probably going to care about winning, even if only a little bit. In 4-man FFA, the best player of the four is just about as likely to win as the next guy. There's nothing wrong with that really, but I think it's important to realize that there is always going to be a guy scampering on the outside of the battle and snagging people's kills (or something to that effect), and sometimes just being really good at the game doesn't make you win.
I'm still up for the FFA tournament, but I just think it's dumb to start putting on all these rules to try and regulate what is by far the most chaotic type of match.

If you don't like 4man FFA tourny, then join one of the other 2 tournies going on, and if you don't like those, make your own damn tourny, and stop bitching about everyone elses.

I'm not trying to argue that any one style of play is more legitimate than any other. I don't know about you, but when I play Smash, I play to win. Fun is the natural product of that entire experience. Additionally, I'm not trying to provoke another silly debate, I just wanted to point out that Vs. Brawl matches are inherently competitive. A peaceful game of Brawl would either end in a draw, or not at all. It's the nature of the game. Unless, of course, you're only interested in working with your friends to create some funny screencaps.

I think he was focusing more on the idea of "competitive" play being classic tournie style, as opposed to casual play where people are less restrictive on what they do. Sure, it's all technically competitive, but that word has certain connotations in the context of Brawl.

Also, I'm not sure the complaint is so much against unsportsmanlike conduct as it is against boring and lame shit. Running away all the time = boring and lame. Turtling = boring and lame. Edgehogging doesn't = boring and lame. I dunno, the difference seems pretty clear to me at least.
Argue all you like, but how is turtling lame? There are two people playing the game, and one of the two has to attack the other. The rule states that the person who is ahead must always attack or else they face the banhammer.
No, it specifically does not state that you ass.
There is a difference between retreating and stalling forever.
and I explained it if you would care to read what I actually post.
What I explained is what turtling is. Turtling is getting into a defensive position and waiting for your opponent to attack. I.E. getting on the leftmost platform of Jungle Japes and waiting.
So still no spoiler warning in the thread title? Thread title says it's safe to come in, yet the OP says spoilers don't need to be tagged. It's conflicting.

i've heard a couple of different versions, but they're basically the same thing. the way i played it was you'd play a 4-stock (2-3 stock for brawl i guess), no items, FFA match and the winner of each match would down a shot. you could say it keeps the playing field even.
i guess you could make whoever came in last place do the shot, but it's funny either way. my friend who won like 4 matches in a row got drunk so fast, lol.
playing smash drunk is something everyone should experience. it's simply glorious.

Who is doing this?
The last three pages or something, I think.
Sorry, I was trying to make a point how the tourny creators weren't making rules, but having rules forced down their throat.
Doesn't matter now though, that conversation has passed.
Haha, whatever. If a tournament creator doesn't want any rules then they just say "no rules". It's that easy!
To illustrate - I am starting a hypothetical tournament. It's all stages, all items, 1v1, round robin, 4 stock 9 minute. Now, attempt to force some rules down my hypothetical throat.
Hey guys, does Brawl use its own specific code system for online friends or does it just use your Wii code? if it just uses your Wii code shouldn't we get a list of Wii codes of people who want to play Brawl in the first post so we can add each other to our friend list and get some serious online gaming going?
My favorite Smash Bros drinking game has always been two or three people, one low level cpu set to Jigglypuff. Everyone drinks everytime she cries her name as she flies off the screen ("jigaleepuuuuuuuuuuuuuff"). Or you can play four people and just set them all to Jigglypuff.
Haha, whatever. If a tournament creator doesn't want any rules then they just say "no rules". It's that easy!

What goes? like technique-wise?
If I haven't mentioned it, then it's not restricted. Since this tournament is 'just for fun' and everyone will just be getting the game, there's no sense in banning any techniques until it can be shown that they are effective in the new online, items on, brawl environment. In a way this will also help identify any strategies that may need to be considered for future, more serious business, tournaments.
